Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, is a PlayStation 3 single-player action-platformer built around fast weapon swapping, bolt collecting, Raritanium upgrades, gadgets, Clank puzzle sections, and on-rails space combat.
This guide is for first-run fundamentals. It is not a planet-by-planet walkthrough, Gold Bolt guide, Holo-Plan route, Skill Point checklist, exact weapon upgrade table, or Challenge Mode optimization guide.
Essential Tips
1. Build Your Quick Select Early
The weapon wheel is part of combat, not just a menu.
Hold Triangle to use Quick Select, then organize the weapons and devices you actually use. Because the menu can pause the action unless that behavior is disabled, use it to swap calmly between crowd control, precise shots, explosives, and support devices instead of scrolling under pressure.
2. Rotate Weapons Instead of Favoring One Gun
Weapons improve through use, so spread experience around.
If one weapon solves every easy fight, it will leave the rest of your arsenal underdeveloped. Use weaker encounters to level neglected weapons, then save your most reliable choices for armored enemies, flying targets, bosses, or crowded rooms.
3. Treat Devices as Emergency Tools
Devices are powerful but scarce.
Combat devices such as the Groovitron are not ordinary ammo dumps. Use them when a room is about to overwhelm you, when you need a safe opening, or when a tougher enemy group is wasting health and ammo.
4. Spend Raritanium With a Plan
Upgrade weapons you are actually using.
Raritanium supports weapon improvements, but a beginner guide should not pretend every upgrade tree has the same priority. Put early resources into weapons that fit your playstyle and show up often in your combat rotation, then leave exact stat-maxing for a dedicated upgrade guide.
5. Break More Than Crates
Bolts come from enemies, crates, and breakables.
Smash objects as you move through each area, refill from ammo crates before pushing ahead, and treat Nanotech crates as health recovery instead of background props. The game rewards a steady sweep more than sprinting from objective to objective.
6. Buy Armor When Damage Starts Outpacing You
Armor is a survival purchase, not just a completion item.
If normal rooms start draining your Nanotech too quickly, stop trying to solve the problem only with better shooting. Check armor vendors when available, because reducing incoming damage makes long routes and boss attempts much more forgiving.
7. Use the Map Before Wandering
The map is there to reduce aimless cleanup.
Open the map when a level opens up, after reaching a vendor, or when you are not sure whether you missed a branch. It can track progress and point you toward vendors or points of interest without turning the run into a full collectible route.
8. Learn the Rhythm of Challenge Mode Later
The first run teaches the toolkit; Challenge Mode stresses it.
After completion, Challenge Mode lets you carry gear forward, face tougher enemies, chase a bolt multiplier, and push weapons into Omega versions. Do not plan your entire first playthrough around postgame prices or exact upgrade math.
Weapons, Devices, and Raritanium
| Tool Type | Beginner Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Standard weapons | Main damage, leveling through use, different ranges and enemy roles | Do not leave half the arsenal unused |
| Explosives | Groups, heavier enemies, fast clears when safe | Ammo pressure and splash positioning |
| Devices | Emergency control, distractions, support effects | Limited supply and vendor dependence |
| Gadgets | Traversal, puzzle progress, route access | Some tools ask for different input habits |
| Raritanium upgrades | Improve weapons you rely on | Exact costs and optimal paths need checking |
The practical loop is simple: buy or find a tool, put it on Quick Select, use it enough to understand its role, and then decide whether it deserves Raritanium. A weapon you never equip should not eat upgrade resources just because it is new.
For hard rooms, open with a device or crowd-control option, switch into a damage weapon, then clean up with something that needs experience. For easy rooms, reverse that logic: level weaker weapons while the threat is low.
Bolts, Armor, and Survival
Bolts are your long-term momentum. Clear enemies, smash crates, hit breakables, and check side spaces before leaving an area. You do not need an exhaustive collectible route to keep a healthy economy; you just need to stop leaving obvious money behind.
Ammo discipline matters because vendors are not always next to the fight you are struggling with. Refill before moving on, avoid wasting premium shots on harmless enemies, and use the wrench or cheaper weapons when a target does not justify expensive ammo.
Nanotech is health, and it improves through enemy-defeat experience. That means survival and progression are linked: taking cleaner fights keeps you alive now, while continuing to fight instead of skipping every enemy helps Ratchet become sturdier over time.
Armor is the beginner-friendly answer when your execution is fine but the damage curve is getting rude. If a new area feels suddenly punishing, check whether the game has made a better armor purchase available.
Clank, SIXAXIS, and Space Combat
Clank sections are puzzle sections first. Watch what the Zoni can interact with, then solve the room in steps: move safely, use time-slowing when obstacles demand it, and commit Zoni to object commands only after you understand what the room is asking.
SIXAXIS motion can appear in freefall and with specific tools. If tilt sections feel inconsistent, slow down and treat them as control challenges rather than normal platforming. Before a long session, check the options menu so you know which control assists or toggles are available on your setup.
Aphelion space combat is on rails. Prioritize survival, clear incoming enemies and projectiles, and shoot obvious objects or ships when it is safe to collect more bolts. Because the path is fixed, overcorrecting your aim is usually worse than steady tracking.
PS3 and Streaming Availability
The native version is a PlayStation 3 game on Blu-ray Disc. Digital PS3 Store purchases are time-sensitive: PlayStation announced PS3 Store closures beginning in select markets in August 2026, more markets in late 2026, and all other countries in July 2027; previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future.
For modern PlayStation access, Sony announced Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction for PlayStation Plus Premium Classics in November 2022. PlayStation’s current PS Plus page says classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog are streaming-only where available, and that availability can vary over time, region, and plan.
Before planning around PS Plus, check the live listing in the console hub or Cloud Streaming Game Finder. Do not assume there is a native PS4 or PS5 download.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not leave Quick Select unorganized - A messy wheel makes every hard room slower than it needs to be.
-
Do not level only one favorite weapon - Easy fights are the safest place to build weaker tools.
-
Do not spend Raritanium on weapons you never equip - Upgrade the tools that are actually carrying your run.
-
Do not throw devices at harmless enemies - Save scarce support items for rooms where control changes the fight.
-
Do not skip obvious breakables and crates - Bolts, ammo, and Nanotech are part of the route economy.
-
Do not ignore armor when damage spikes - Better defenses can matter more than one more risky weapon purchase.
-
Do not rush Clank puzzle rooms - Read the Zoni interactions before committing commands.
-
Do not chase a Challenge Mode multiplier recklessly - Taking hits breaks the point of the streak.
