Resogun is Housemarque’s PlayStation arcade shooter about circling a voxel arena, clearing enemy waves, rescuing humans, and keeping your multiplier alive under pressure. This guide is for the original Arcade/Score Attack style of play, not an exact scoring route, trophy route, all-human route, boss script, or ship-stat guide.
This scope matters. Heroes is DLC with Survival and Demolition. Defenders is DLC with Protector, Commando, and Battle Mode. The Season Pass is DLC packaging, not a different base ruleset. PS3 and PS Vita ports exist, but they have platform differences from PS4, and the PS4 version is the one the current PlayStation Store page surfaces for PS5 compatibility.
Rating note: ESRB rates Resogun Everyone 10+ with Fantasy Violence and Users Interact.
Version Notes
| Topic | Beginner Guidance |
|---|---|
| Original game | Treat Arcade and level-based Score Attack as the base-game focus |
| Heroes DLC | Survival and Demolition are expansion modes, not Arcade rules |
| Defenders DLC | Protector, Commando, and Battle Mode are expansion modes |
| Season Pass | Access/packaging for DLC and bonuses, not a separate guide target |
| PS3 / PS Vita | Ports run differently from PS4; Vita has its own ad-hoc/touch notes |
| PS5 | The PS4 version is listed as playable via compatibility with possible missing PS4 features |
| Store status | The US base-game page may show not available for purchase; refresh before release |
Keep these boundaries in mind when reading old advice. A Protector tip about Super Boost, a Demolition tip about wrecking balls, or a Commando wave tactic does not automatically apply to an Arcade run.
Essential Arcade Tips
1. Learn Survival Before Score Chasing
A dead ship cannot rescue humans or keep a multiplier.
Resogun constantly asks you to choose between killing the next wave, catching Keepers, carrying a human, and saving resources for a boss. In early runs, make the arena readable first. Stay alive, keep escape space, and use score as feedback rather than the only goal.
2. Treat Keepers as Priority Alarms
A Keeper window is temporary.
When Keepers appear, shift attention quickly. Most humans are released by destroying Keeper groups, and some Keepers can leave if you delay. Clear enough space to reach them, then return to the wave before the arena collapses.
3. Read Ordered Keepers Before Shooting
Some groups punish random fire.
Some Keeper groups must be destroyed in sequence. If you see target-style marking, slow your shooting rhythm just enough to avoid breaking the order. Spraying through the whole group may save a second and lose the human.
4. Keep the Multiplier Alive With Small Actions
You do not always need a huge kill to reset the clock.
The multiplier warning shifts from safe to urgent before it breaks. Enemy kills, human pickup/deposit actions, and power-ups can refresh it. Learn to use nearby opportunities instead of crossing the whole arena in panic.
5. Save Humans for Progress, Not Only Points
Human rescues can supply important rewards.
A human rescue can reward more than score. If you ignore humans completely, you may enter later pressure with fewer resources than the run expects. Rescue when the route is safe enough, and abandon the attempt when the rescue would cost the whole life.
6. Use Single-Level Practice Deliberately
Arcade consistency comes from repeating trouble spots.
If one arena or boss keeps ending runs, practice it separately instead of replaying the full chain every time. Use practice to learn wave rhythm, Keeper timing, bomb discipline, and how much space you need before a boss.
7. Try Ships by Feel, Not by Internet Verdict
Do not import a ship-stat table into a beginner run.
Ships handle differently, but this guide does not check exact stats or high-score preferences. Try each one for a few runs and keep the one that lets you survive, aim, boost, and rescue humans most consistently.
8. Turn on Retro Camera if Motion Hurts Readability
A cleaner view can beat a flashier view.
The official guide describes a Retro camera option that reduces vertical camera panning. If you are losing bullets, humans, or Keepers in the spectacle, test it.
Humans and Keepers
Humans are the heart of Arcade mode because they pull your attention away from pure shooting. Use this routine when a rescue opportunity appears:
| Situation | Better Habit |
|---|---|
| Keepers detected | Clear a path, find the green Keeper group, and destroy it quickly |
| Ordered Keeper group | Identify the current target before firing through the group |
| Human released | Pick up the human before abductors or hazards take over |
| Carrying a human | Deposit when safe, or throw only when you have practiced the angle |
| Multiplier-gated human | Keep your multiplier alive broadly; do not rely on exact route memory in this guide |
| Arena overloaded | Save the ship first; a failed hero play can lose the run and the human |
Do not use this as an all-human checklist. Exact human locations, secret-human windows, reward tables, and ordered-Keeper routes belong in a separate dedicated route guide.
Multiplier Habits
The multiplier is not just a score number. It is a pressure meter that pushes you to keep acting. The official guide’s simplest lesson is enough for beginner play: when the multiplier starts warning you, do something useful soon.
| Goal | Practical Action |
|---|---|
| Keep it active | Kill or hit reachable enemies instead of drifting through empty space |
| Avoid panic | Watch the color state and move before it is critical |
| Preserve options | Leave yourself an enemy or power-up when a phase transition is near |
| Support rescues | Pick up or deposit a human when it is safe and useful |
| Prevent overreach | Let a risky score idea go if it would trap the ship |
High-score play eventually gets much more exact, but beginner Arcade improvement starts with fewer dead gaps, fewer missed Keepers, and fewer deaths caused by chasing one extra action.
Boost, Overdrive, and Bombs
Boost
Boost is both movement and offense. Use it to escape swarms, cross the arena, ram through enemies, and create a burst at the end. Do not spend every boost the moment it returns. Keep enough control to avoid ending inside the next threat.
Overdrive
Overdrive is a major answer to heavy pressure, boss danger, and dense enemies. Destroyed enemies feed its meter, so strong shooting supports future Overdrive use. Save it when you can, spend it when a saved run is worth more than a perfect plan.
Bombs
Bombs are the panic brake. They can clear the field, but they also remove enemies that could have extended your multiplier. That does not mean hoard them forever. If the choice is bomb or die, bomb.
| Pressure | First Question |
|---|---|
| Surrounded by small enemies | Can boost create a safe lane? |
| Dense wave plus Keeper call | Can Overdrive clear enough space without missing the Keeper? |
| Incoming death | Is a bomb the clean save? |
| Empty arena after a bomb | Where is the next enemy or objective that keeps the run moving? |
| Boss attempt | Do you have enough lives, bombs, and Overdrive to recover from mistakes? |
Practice Path
- Start on a lower difficulty and finish clean runs before chasing score.
- Practice one ship until movement and boost timing feel automatic.
- Learn to respond to Keeper calls without losing the whole arena.
- Add human rescues gradually; do not force every rescue during early survival practice.
- Use single-level practice for the arena or boss that keeps breaking Arcade runs.
- Revisit difficulty only when you can explain why you died.
- Save exact score routing, all-human routing, and trophy routing for dedicated route material.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not ignore Keeper calls - Keeper windows can vanish, and missed Keepers often mean lost humans.
-
Do not spray ordered Keeper groups blindly - Some groups require a target sequence.
-
Do not carry a human through a collapsing arena - Deposit, throw with control, or abandon the rescue before it costs the life.
-
Do not hoard bombs past the death moment - A saved bomb does nothing after the ship is gone.
-
Do not bomb every mild problem - A cleared field can make multiplier recovery harder.
-
Do not boost without planning the exit - Boost saves runs only if the ship ends somewhere safe.
-
Do not treat DLC mode advice as Arcade advice - Heroes and Defenders modes have separate mechanics.
-
Do not copy ship-stat or trophy routes into this guide - Save those for a dedicated route.
