Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D action RPG by Ska Studios built around fast combat, dark island exploration, sanctuaries, Salt, equipment, spells, and a large Skill Tree. This guide is for Salt and Sanctuary, not Salt and Sacrifice; do not import Mage Hunts, full online co-op, PvP factions, or Marked Inquisitor advice from the later successor.
Content warning: Salt and Sanctuary includes mature content such as blood/gore, partial nudity, and violence. This guide keeps discussion non-graphic and focused on player actions.
Difficulty caveat: this is a beginner guide, not a route that makes the game easy. The goal is to reduce avoidable friction before you commit to a build, route, creed plan, or boss strategy.
This guide covers first-playthrough fundamentals. It is not a walkthrough, boss order, optimized build sheet, creed guide, map route, item-location guide, trophy guide, or Salt and Sacrifice guide.
Essential Tips
1. Keep Salt and Sanctuary Separate From Salt and Sacrifice
The names are close, but the systems are not interchangeable.
Salt and Sacrifice is a later online co-op successor with Marked Inquisitors, Mage-focused progression, online co-op, and PvP systems. Salt and Sanctuary advice should center on sanctuaries, Salt, the island, local/shared-screen support, Skill Tree growth, and the first game’s combat loop.
2. Treat Sanctuaries as Your Home Base
A sanctuary is more than a checkpoint.
Use sanctuaries to heal, level, spend Salt, work with the Skill Tree, and use available services such as upgrades, buying, or learning spells and prayers. If a sanctuary does not offer every service, that can be tied to creed ownership, so do not assume every altar works exactly like your current home sanctuary.
3. Spend Salt Before Testing Unknown Danger
Salt is progress, not a souvenir.
When you have enough Salt to level or make meaningful progress, bank that progress at a sanctuary before walking into a new boss door, trap-heavy room, or unfamiliar branch. Death can leave your Salt recoverable, but the recovery run itself can become the next problem.
4. Recover Salt Calmly After Death
Your first job after dying is not revenge.
After a death, identify where the Salt went and whether you can safely reach it. Sometimes it is better to return carefully, recover the Salt, and leave than to immediately push deeper with low resources and the same mistake still unsolved.
5. Learn Wounding and Fatigue Early
Your bars can shrink before they empty.
Health can suffer Wounding, and stamina can suffer Fatigue. Resting at a sanctuary can remove those penalties, so pay attention when a route feels worse over time. A run that started fine can become risky if your effective health or stamina has been worn down.
6. Leave Stamina for the Exit
Attacking, casting, rolling, blocking, and jumping compete for the same survival rhythm.
Do not spend every bit of stamina on one more swing or spell. End a punish with enough room to roll, block, jump, or back away. If a weapon feels strong but empties your stamina too often, it may be too demanding for your current setup.
7. Watch Equipload Before Blaming the Roll
Weight changes movement, rolling, and jumping.
Equipload has several tiers. The lightest range moves and rolls fastest, while heavier ranges slow you down, and over 100% makes movement severely limited and prevents rolling. If the game suddenly feels clumsy, check armor and weapon weight before changing your whole build.
8. Test Every New Weapon Before You Trust It
Damage numbers are only part of a weapon.
Weapon categories differ in range, speed, stamina cost, delay, animation, one-handed behavior, two-handed behavior, and moveset quirks. Try light and heavy attacks, directional variations, and one-handed/two-handed use somewhere safe before taking the weapon into a hard fight.
9. Let Class Be a Starting Point
Starting class does not lock the whole run.
Class affects starting gear and early Skill Tree direction, but the Skill Tree can still move you toward different stats, armor, and weapon tiers. Do not restart just because you want to experiment; save exact class optimization for a dedicated build guide.
10. Spend Black Pearls With a Purpose
The Skill Tree rewards commitment more than wandering.
Black Pearls come from leveling and feed the connected Skill Tree. Follow nodes that support the weapons, armor, spells, or prayers you actually plan to use. Avoid scattering points across unrelated gear types just because several branches look interesting.
11. Change Routes When the Wall Feels Wrong
The island is not a single hallway.
The sourced mechanics notes describe shortcuts, alternate paths, and areas that may be beyond your current level. If one path feels unreasonable, leave, level, adjust equipment, try a different branch, or return after opening a shortcut.
12. Check Classic vs Enhanced Before Following Advice
Mode-specific balance matters.
Steam patch notes added Enhanced Combat after launch and say it changes mechanics and numbers. Existing characters use Classic, and new characters can choose a mode. When reading outside advice, check whether it is Classic, Enhanced, old-patch, or platform-specific before treating it as exact.
Core Systems
| System | Beginner Takeaway |
|---|---|
| Salt | Main progression resource; spend it before blind pushes when possible |
| Gold | Death can cost gold, so do shopping and repairs before risky exploration |
| Sanctuaries | Heal, level, Skill Tree access, upgrades, shops, and spells/prayers may be available depending on context |
| Black Pearls | Earned through leveling and used to unlock connected Skill Tree nodes |
| Wounding | Health can be reduced by damage pressure; rest or use supported recovery tools |
| Fatigue | Stamina can be reduced by repeated strain; rest or use supported recovery tools |
| Stamina | Used by attacks, casting, rolling, blocking, and jumping |
| Focus | Spell/prayer resource; do not plan a caster route without understanding recovery |
| Equipload | Lower weight improves movement, rolls, and jumps; overburdening is dangerous |
| Skill Tree | Supports stats and equipment permissions; route exact builds separately |
Combat and Survival
| Situation | Safer Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New enemy | Block, dodge, and watch before committing | Enemy attacks and patterns differ |
| New weapon | Test attacks and directional inputs away from danger | Movesets can matter more than raw damage |
| Low stamina | Stop attacking and create space | You need stamina for defense and movement |
| Heavy gear | Remove weight or add Endurance before relying on rolls | Equipload changes roll and movement quality |
| Long route | Return to a sanctuary if Wounding or Fatigue stacks up | Restoring bars can matter more than one more attempt |
| Lost Salt | Recover it first, then decide whether to continue | Greed can turn one death into several |
| Hard branch | Try another route or upgrade before forcing it | The island supports alternate paths and shortcuts |
| Outside guide | Check patch, platform, and Classic/Enhanced mode | Balance and mechanics can differ by update or mode |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not use Salt and Sacrifice guides for this game - The successor has different systems, online structure, and progression language.
-
Do not carry a full Salt level into a blind push - Spend progress at a sanctuary before testing unknown danger.
-
Do not ignore Wounding and Fatigue - Smaller effective bars can make a familiar route feel suddenly unfair.
-
Do not equip past a comfortable weight tier by accident - Heavy equipment can slow movement, rolls, and jumps enough to change a fight.
-
Do not assume high damage means a weapon fits you - Stamina cost, speed, range, and moveset can make a big weapon harder than it looks.
-
Do not spread Skill Tree points everywhere - Unlock the stats and equipment permissions your actual plan needs.
-
Do not treat starting class as a permanent build - It is a starting package, not a final identity.
-
Do not convert, desecrate, or optimize creeds from memory - Creed-specific decisions need a dedicated sourced guide.
-
Do not force one path forever - Explore another branch, open shortcuts, upgrade, level, or return later.
-
Do not follow old balance advice without checking mode - Classic and Enhanced mode advice can diverge.
