Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows Beginner Tips - Bombs, Bursts, and Tonics

Beginner Plague of Shadows tips for Bomb Burst movement, bomb casings, powders, fuses, Arcana, tonics, Cipher Coins, and Potionarium upgrades.

On this page

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is the Plague Knight campaign. It shares a lot of stage DNA with Shovel Knight, but the way you move, attack, survive, and upgrade is different enough that old habits can work against you. Treat Plague Knight like a volatile alchemist, not like a knight with a shorter shovel.

Content note: This campaign is rated for general audiences, with mild fantasy combat and alchemy/potion humor. This guide keeps enemy and explosion discussion non-graphic.

This is a practical guide for Bomb Burst movement, bomb parts, Arcana, tonics, and Cipher Coins. It is not a full coin route or boss walkthrough.

Essential Tips

1. Play the First Stage as a New Character

The campaign looks familiar before it feels familiar.

Plague Knight skids more than Shovel Knight, has a fixed-height jump, and relies on double jump plus Bomb Burst for serious movement. Give yourself a few screens to relearn spacing. If you try to force Shovel Knight timing onto Plague Knight, simple pits and small platforms become much harder than they need to be.

2. Charge Before You Need to Move

Bomb Burst is strongest when it is ready early.

Hold the bomb button until Plague Knight flashes, then release toward your intended direction. The key is planning. A horizontal burst covers a lot of space quickly, but it does not steer like a normal jump once committed. Start charging before a gap, ladder exit, enemy approach, or room transition so you are not scrambling at the edge.

3. Use Neutral Bursts for Control

Straight up is often safer than sideways.

If a long sideways burst keeps sending you past ledges, use a neutral Bomb Burst to rise vertically instead. It gives cleaner landing control and helps you attack or reposition without launching across the whole screen. For early learning, neutral burst plus double jump is often more reliable than trying to thread a wild diagonal line.

4. Save the Double Jump to Stop Momentum

Your second jump is also a brake.

After a sideways Bomb Burst, a neutral double jump can cut momentum and help you land. Do not always spend both jumps before bursting. A better sequence is often jump, charge, burst, neutral jump, then adjust with bombs. That gives you a recovery option after the burst instead of leaving you helpless.

5. Throw Bombs in the Air to Slow Down

Bomb Brake turns panic into positioning.

Airborne bomb throws slow Plague Knight, and several throws slow him more. Use that to avoid overshooting platforms, line up an enemy hit, or buy time while the next burst charges. After big horizontal bursts, too much speed is often the real problem.

6. Keep an Easy Bomb Formula Equipped

Reliable damage beats fancy chemistry while learning.

Bombs are built from Casing, Powder, and Fuse. Early on, Bounce or Lob-style trajectories with Black Powder and a quick or standard detonation are easier to understand than specialized trap setups. Once you can land hits consistently, branch into Orbit, Whirl, Remote, Impact, or powders with fewer active bombs.

7. Separate Trajectory, Explosion, and Timing

Each bomb part solves a different problem.

Casing decides where the bomb travels. Powder decides what the explosion does and often how many bombs can be active. Fuse decides when or how the bomb detonates. When a loadout feels bad, change one category at a time. If you miss high enemies, change the casing. If the blast pattern is wrong, change the powder. If hits happen late, change the fuse.

8. Carry Tonics Before Hard Stages

Your health buffer can disappear after a fall.

Health Tonics raise Plague Knight’s maximum health by one bubble, but the boost is lost when he falls in battle. Use the Potionarium between stages, drink tonics before dangerous routes, and keep extras for recovery. Starting a boss with empty tonic reserves is one of the easiest ways to make Plague Knight feel weaker than he is.

9. Spend Cipher Coins With a Plan

Bomb development is your main growth path.

Cipher Coins fund bomb part development, so collect them even when they require a detour. Greyed-out coins are already collected. Prioritize parts that fix the problem you keep having: better arcs, faster blasts, terrain-triggered explosions, or safer control.

10. Use Arcana for Utility, Not Just Damage

Side tools cover weaknesses your bombs do not.

Arcana consume Alchemy Power and can blow out the meter if overused. Use them deliberately: a platform tool can save a route, a dash can reposition, a large blast can clear space, and a recovery option can stabilize boss fights. Watch the meter color and stop before overuse leaves you dry.

11. Return to the Potionarium Often

The hub is part of the upgrade loop.

Mona handles bomb parts, the Magicist handles power upgrades and tonics, and other Potionarium characters connect to rewards. Check in between stages. New parts and more durability can change which route or boss feels reasonable next.

12. Use Burst Contact as an Escape Tool

The burst is movement and protection.

The start of Bomb Burst can protect Plague Knight and damage enemies. If you are trapped by a close enemy, a charged burst can carry you through the threat instead of forcing awkward close-range bomb throws. This is not a license to face-tank every hazard, but it is a core part of how Plague Knight escapes pressure.

Bomb Burst Movement

SituationSafer HabitWhy It Works
Long horizontal gapCharge early, burst, then neutral jumpThe double jump helps stop drift
Tall ledgeNeutral burst firstIt gives height without wild sideways speed
Overshooting platformsThrow bombs in the airBomb Brake bleeds off momentum
Enemy blocking a pathBurst through when chargedThe opening frames can protect and damage
Ladder or room transitionHold charge before control returnsYou can begin the next action ready
Pit recoveryDouble jump or burst before panic inputsPlague Knight has more recovery than his first jump suggests

Plague Knight’s movement is intentionally tricky. The goal is not to make every jump gentle; it is to keep a charged option available. Once you start thinking in chains, the campaign opens up: jump, burst, throw, jump, burst, brake, land. Practice that in low-pressure rooms before using it over spikes or pits.

Bomb Loadout Basics

Part TypeWhat It ChangesBeginner Read
CasingBomb pathPick this when the bomb is not reaching the target
PowderExplosion pattern and active countPick this when the blast is too small, slow, or awkward
FuseDetonation timingPick this when bombs explode too early or too late
Burst TypeMovement behaviorPick this when platforming control is the problem
ArcanaSide toolPick this when bombs and burst do not cover the situation

Start with consistency. Bounce Casing is versatile, Black Powder allows frequent basic blasts, and standard or quick timing keeps feedback immediate. Lob helps when enemies or blocks sit above you. Orbit and Whirl are stronger once you understand their paths. Remote and Sentry setups can be excellent, but they demand patience.

Powder choice affects rhythm. Some explosion styles hit harder or cover more area but reduce how often you can throw. If you are missing basic enemies, return to a faster, simpler pattern. If a boss gives you enough space to prepare traps, experiment with heavier or more specialized powders and fuses.

Arcana, Tonics, and Cipher Coins

Arcana are not replacements for learning bombs. They are answers to specific problems. Bait Bomb can interact with sparkling pits and gives you a safe ranged option early. Leech Liquid can help in fights where you can keep damaging enemies. Smoke Bomb, Vat, Staff of Surging, Fleet Flask, Berserker’s Brew, and Staff of Striking each change positioning, safety, or damage rhythm in ways bombs alone do not.

Tonics are just as important. Because tonic health disappears after defeat, treat them like stage preparation rather than permanent health. Before a boss or a level with rough platforming, drink enough to give yourself room for mistakes, then carry spare tonics if you can afford them.

Cipher Coins should shape your route priorities. A detour for coins is not just completion padding; it can unlock the bomb part that makes your next stage smoother. Explore breakable-looking walls, revisit routes when your movement improves, and check whether new bomb parts solve a stage you were avoiding.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not play this like Shovel of Hope - Plague Knight does not solve movement with shovel drops.
  2. Do not spend both jumps before every burst - Save a double jump when you need a landing brake.
  3. Do not hold one sideways direction through every burst - Neutral burst and neutral jump are control tools.
  4. Do not ignore airborne bomb throws - Bomb Brake is one of Plague Knight’s most useful safety habits.
  5. Do not change every bomb part at once - Adjust Casing, Powder, or Fuse one at a time.
  6. Do not use slow trap bombs for every room - Simple direct bombs are better when enemies rush you.
  7. Do not enter bosses with empty tonic reserves - Tonics turn small mistakes into recoverable mistakes.
  8. Do not spam Arcana until the meter blows out - Watch the power state and pause before overuse.
  9. Do not skip Cipher Coins because the level looks familiar - Plague Knight’s upgrades depend on them.
  10. Do not assume other campaign advice applies - Specter Knight, King Knight, and Shovel Knight use different rules.
