Splitgate Tips - Portal Shooter Habits for New Players

Learn Splitgate portal combat, movement, weapons, map habits, and survival basics for the original peer-to-peer arena shooter.

On this page

Splitgate is the original free-to-play arena shooter from 1047 Games, not Splitgate 2 or the later Arena Reloaded branding. It plays like a fast sci-fi FPS where every duel can change direction through player-made portals, map weapons, objective modes, and sudden angles.

This guide focuses on the original Splitgate client in its peer-to-peer era. Expect hosted lobbies, custom games, and cross-platform play to matter more than old dedicated matchmaking routines. For parents and sensitive players, the game is Teen-rated for sci-fi gun violence and blood, with online interactions and in-game purchases.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Portals as Your Main Weapon

Your gun finishes fights, but portals create the fight you want. Use them to appear behind enemies, escape bad angles, cross the map faster, and shoot through unexpected sightlines. If you only portal after losing a duel, you are playing a regular shooter with extra buttons.

2. Learn Which Walls Accept Portals

Portals only work on portal walls, so map knowledge starts with recognizing those surfaces. As you move through each arena, call out nearby portal walls mentally: one for escape, one for attack, and one for reaching power weapons or objectives.

3. Shoot Through Portals Before You Step Through

You can damage enemies through your own portals, and sometimes that is safer than entering. Open a line, check what is visible, fire if the target is exposed, then close or reposition before another player tracks the angle.

4. Close Portals After Escaping

Portals are two-way opportunities. If you flee through one and leave it open, a pursuer can follow or shoot through it. Build the habit of closing portals after a defensive retreat unless you deliberately want to bait a chase.

5. Use EMP Grenades on Portals

Splitgate’s EMP grenades are for removing enemy portals, not for normal explosive kills. When an opponent owns a strong flank, a protected sightline, or a fast objective route, break the portal first and take the duel second.

6. Swap Weapons Under Pressure

Map weapons and starting weapons all have practical roles, but a reload at close range is often slower than switching. If your magazine runs dry while an enemy is still alive, change weapons, keep tracking, and reload only after you have cover.

7. Run Race Training to Learn Maps

Race Training is useful even if you do not care about times. It forces you to notice portal walls, jump routes, map lanes, and momentum paths. Treat each run as a quiet map tour before bringing those routes into real matches.

8. Keep Moving Instead of Camping a Portal

A static portal trap can work once, but Splitgate’s arenas reward motion. If you stare through one angle too long, the fight moves elsewhere or another player finds you. Use portals to rotate, not just to hold a window.

9. Practice Momentum Launches

Momentum carries through portals. Drop into one portal from height, exit another with speed, then use your jetpack and aim to extend the path. You do not need trick-shot mastery, but basic launch control opens safer flanks and better high-ground attacks.

10. Play the Objective Before the Highlight

Splitgate has deathmatch, free-for-all, control, flag, ball, VIP, Showdown, Takedown, and custom modes. A clever portal kill is not always the right play. If the mode asks for a hill, flag, ball, or teammate survival, portal toward that win condition first.

Portal Combat Basics

Start every life by finding two things: a safe portal wall near you and a useful portal wall near the action. That gives you an exit and an entry before the first duel starts. If you wait until you are already weak, you will usually panic-fire a portal at the wrong surface or step through into another bad angle.

Think of each portal pair as a temporary route. One route can move you to a power weapon. Another can create a firing window into an objective room. Another can become a retreat path after you trade damage. The best players keep changing the route as the fight changes.

When you open a portal, do not tunnel vision on what is directly in front of it. Enemies can shoot back, jump through, or attack your real body while you are staring through the window. Take a quick look, make the shot or decision, then move. Closing a portal is part of the move, not an afterthought.

Triple portal movement is worth practicing once basic movement feels natural. The idea is to step partly into one portal, place a new portal farther ahead from that angle, then back out or continue through to chain distance. It is awkward at first, but it teaches the deeper lesson: portals are not just doors; they are ways to create new lines of sight.

Weapons and Map Control

Splitgate uses arena shooter logic, so weapon pickups matter. Stronger weapons appear on map spawns, and shared respawn timers mean one pickup can deny that tool to everyone else for a while. If you see a Rocket Launcher, Railgun, Shotgun, Sniper, or another high-impact weapon, decide whether taking it helps your team, denies the enemy, or supports the current objective.

Do not ignore your basic weapons. The Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, Carbine, Pistol, Plasma Rifle, SMG, and similar tools still win fights when your crosshair placement and portal angle are clean. The goal is not to chase every pickup blindly; the goal is to understand which weapon matches the fight you are about to create.

Map control in Splitgate is partly physical and partly visual. You control a lane when your team can move through it, watch it through portals, and break enemy portals with EMPs. You lose control when you leave escape routes open for opponents, ignore weapon timers, or let the enemy set up a portal angle without pressure.

Peer-to-Peer Play Scope

The original Splitgate no longer depends on its old dedicated server setup. Current play is built around peer-to-peer hosting, where one player hosts and others join through a server browser. Consoles and cross-platform play remain part of that setup, but match quality, available lobbies, custom maps, and host behavior can vary more than they did in the old live-service structure.

Plan around that reality. Use custom games to learn mechanics with friends, check lobby settings before assuming a mode is standard, and treat achievements, races, battle-pass routines, store loops, and old leaderboard goals cautiously. The best evergreen reason to play the original Splitgate now is the portal combat itself: hosted arena matches, custom rules, map learning, and mechanical practice.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Walking past portal walls without marking escape routes - You give up the main tool that makes Splitgate different.

  2. Standing still while staring through a portal - You become easy to flank, shoot, or punish from another angle.

  3. Leaving an escape portal open behind you - Enemies can follow, shoot through it, or use it to read your path.

  4. Throwing EMP grenades at players - EMPs are for disabling enemy portals, so use them to break routes and sightlines.

  5. Reloading in a close duel with a second weapon ready - Swapping often keeps pressure on the target faster than a reload.

  6. Ignoring weapon spawns during objective fights - Strong pickups can decide the next hill, flag run, or team push.

  7. Camping one portal angle for an entire life - The match moves faster than a single static trap can cover.

  8. Entering a portal before checking the exit - You may step directly into crossfire, a bad objective position, or an enemy waiting nearby.

  9. Chasing kills while your mode has an objective - A highlight flank is wasted if the other team scores during it.

  10. Entering a hosted match without checking its rules - Mode and host settings can change the objective, loadout, and match flow.
