Star Fox 64, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo, is a fast arcade rail shooter where clean survival, route choices, wingman management, and score routing all matter.
This guide is scoped to the Nintendo 64 original and reissues of that original. It does not use Star Fox 64 3D tuning, gyro controls, or any separate remake-specific mechanics as original-game advice.
Essential Tips
1. Learn the Arwing in Training First
The campaign expects you to use more than basic steering.
Before chasing medals or hard routes, use Training to get comfortable with boosting, braking, tilting, barrel rolls, somersaults, Smart Bombs, and charged shots. Star Fox 64 gets much easier once these moves are automatic instead of emergency guesses.
2. Use Charged Shots on Formations
Score runs are built around splash damage.
Rapid laser fire is useful, but many enemy groups are better handled by holding the laser until the lock-on appears, then firing the charged shot into the group. This is especially important for medals because grouped enemies can produce bonus points from the blast.
3. Save Smart Bombs for Clusters and Big Targets
A bomb should solve a crowd problem.
Smart Bombs are powerful, limited, and can be detonated after launch. Spend them on large formations, bulky targets, or boss moments where the explosion will convert into real damage or score. Do not waste one on a lone enemy that a laser shot can remove.
4. Barrel Roll Before You Panic
Rolling is your safest reaction to heavy fire.
Double-tap the tilt buttons to barrel roll when lasers and projectiles flood the screen. It can repel shots and reduce damage, and it does not replace smart movement, braking, or ring collection.
5. Watch the Boost Gauge
Boosting, braking, somersaults, and U-turns are limited by recovery time.
The boost gauge turns red while these moves are being used and must recover before another technique can start. Do not burn the gauge casually right before a boss pass, an All-Range chase, or a tight obstacle section.
6. Keep Slippy, Peppy, and Falco Alive
Wingmen are mechanics, not just dialogue.
Slippy enables boss health information, Peppy gives useful tactical prompts, and Falco can matter for alternate routes. Medals also depend on finishing with the team intact, so respond when a wingman calls for help.
7. Treat Routes as Run Planning
Star Fox 64 is short because it is meant to be replayed through branches.
The map uses easy, medium, and hard route colors, and mission results can change the next destination. A first clear can follow safer branches, but medal and Expert Mode goals eventually require learning how to trigger and survive harder paths.
8. Use the Corneria Branch as Your First Route Lesson
The first mission teaches how alternate paths work.
Corneria can lead toward the standard Meteo path or the harder Sector Y path depending on how you handle Falco’s alternate route sequence. If you want route control later, pay attention to these mission-specific objectives instead of only chasing the boss.
9. Aim for Area 6 When You Want the Hard Ending Path
Bolse and Area 6 set up different Venom outcomes.
Bolse is the easier final approach, while Area 6 is the hard approach that leads toward the true Andross route. Do not drift onto the easy line accidentally if the run’s goal is the harder ending path or hard-route medals.
10. Use Checkpoints and Rings Aggressively
Survival items are part of your route, not bonus decoration.
Silver and gold rings refill or extend shields, and checkpoints help recover a failed stage attempt from the middle of a mission. If you are learning a level, prioritize clean ring pickups over greedy low-percentage shots.
11. Protect Laser Upgrades
Wing damage costs more than health.
Laser upgrades carry forward, but losing a wing or dying can knock you back to weaker lasers. Avoid collisions and wing-breaking hazards because they reduce your firepower for the current stage and can hurt the next stage too.
12. Make Medals a Second-Pass Goal
A medal run is a different mindset from a clear.
For medals, you need score, boss efficiency, and surviving wingmen. First learn the route and boss patterns, then come back for a medal plan built around charged shots, bomb timing, and enemy formations.
Combat and Survival
- Lock on before firing at groups: A charged shot into a formation is usually better than spraying single lasers across the screen.
- Brake to line up dense targets: Slowing down briefly can give you time to lock onto a formation, avoid an obstacle, or pick up rings.
- Boost to escape danger, not to rush every section: A careless boost can put you into walls, debris, or enemy fire before the gauge recovers.
- Roll through bullet-heavy lanes: Barrel rolls help when you cannot simply steer away from a wall of projectiles.
- Detonate bombs deliberately: Fire a Smart Bomb where the target will be when it explodes, not just where it was when you panicked.
- Keep shooting destructible threats: Some projectiles and obstacles can be removed, so active fire is often safer than passive dodging.
- Answer ROB64 supply calls: When the supply prompt appears, respond and shoot the container so the contents actually reach you.
- Pause only when you need status: The pause screen can show teammate condition, which matters when a medal or boss gauge depends on wingmen.
Route and Medal Planning
| System | What It Means | Beginner Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Route colors | The map marks easier, medium, and harder paths | Clear once, then replay with a route goal |
| Mission objectives | Some levels branch based on specific actions | Listen to wingmen and learn one branch at a time |
| Retry course | Replaying a completed course costs an Arwing | Use it only when the route result matters |
| Change course | Some hard-path clears let you switch to another branch | Choose based on your run goal, not impulse |
| Bolse vs. Area 6 | These lead to different Venom approaches | Use Bolse for safer clears; use Area 6 for hard-route goals |
| Medals | Stage medals require score and intact wingmen | Learn enemy formations before grinding medals |
| Expert Mode | Main-game medals unlock the harder mode | Treat it as a long-term mastery target |
Vehicles and Wingmen
| Tool | Best Use | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Arwing | Most missions, route branches, dogfights, charged shots | Wing damage weakens your laser state |
| Landmaster | Ground stages on Titania and Macbeth | Hover deliberately; it is not an Arwing dodge |
| Blue Marine | Aquas underwater combat | Torpedoes are unlimited, but movement is slower |
| Falco | Alternate route help and combat support | Losing him can close route options |
| Slippy | Boss shield information | If he leaves, boss health information can disappear |
| Peppy | Tactical and boss advice | Ignoring prompts can make set pieces harder |
| Bill and Katt | Mission-dependent assistance after their appearances | Their help depends on earlier route outcomes |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not chase medals on your first clear - Learn routes, boss behavior, and survival pickups before grinding score.
- Do not ignore wingman calls - Letting teammates retreat can cost boss information, route help, and medal eligibility.
- Do not waste Smart Bombs on single enemies - Save them for formations, large ships, bosses, and score-dense moments.
- Do not fly through every level at max speed - Braking and controlled positioning are often stronger than constant boost.
- Do not forget that barrel rolls are defensive - Use them against projectile pressure instead of trying to dodge every shot raw.
- Do not enter All-Range fights without using radar - Radar is how you keep track of bosses, Star Wolf, items, and arena position.
- Do not treat Bolse and Area 6 as interchangeable - They set up different final approaches and ending-route goals.
- Do not let wing damage linger in your planning - Losing upgraded lasers can make the rest of the stage and next stage harder.
Summary
| Category | Top Tip |
|---|---|
| Combat | Use charged shots on formations and bombs on dense targets |
| Defense | Barrel roll through heavy fire and manage the boost gauge |
| Routes | Plan branches instead of drifting through the map |
| Medals | Keep wingmen alive and learn score routes after a clear |
| Vehicles | Adjust for Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue Marine handling |
