Sundered Tips Guide

Learn how to survive Sundered with practical tips for shards, movement, perks, abilities, deaths, Elder Shards, and non-linear exploration.

On this page

Sundered is a hand-drawn metroidvania built around fast combat, shifting connective rooms, permanent upgrades, and a central choice between resisting or embracing ancient power. Content note: it uses horror atmosphere and fantasy violence, but this guide keeps the advice non-graphic and focused on play.

This is a beginner guide for a game that can feel above beginner level. Expect frequent deaths, sudden enemy pressure, and confusing map moments early on. The trick is to stop reading those moments as lost progress. Most runs teach you something, return you to Sanctuary, and give you a chance to turn shards into real power before the next push.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Death as a Return Trip

Death in Sundered is not a hard reset. It sends Eshe back to Sanctuary, where the shards you collected can become permanent upgrades. That makes a risky scouting run worthwhile even if it ends badly, because the next attempt starts with more health, damage, shield strength, or utility.

Use that loop deliberately. In a new region, learn where the pressure comes from, grab shards, look for shortcuts or ability markers, and come back stronger. If a room overwhelms you, cash out at Sanctuary instead of hoarding for a perfect upgrade path.

2. Spend Shards Whenever You Return

Shards are progression fuel, not a treasure to protect forever. Early upgrades make every later run smoother, and Sundered gives you more shards through enemies, bosses, minibosses, and exploration.

Prioritize upgrades that solve your current wall. If you are dying before learning room layouts, buy survivability. If fights drag until enemy waves surround you, improve damage. If your shield keeps dropping at bad times, build around defense and recovery. The tree is broad enough that you can shape Eshe around what is actually stopping you.

3. Read the Map Differently Than a Normal Metroidvania

Sundered mixes fixed major rooms with changing connective spaces. Important rooms remain consistent, but many corridors between them can rearrange after death or after returning to Sanctuary. That can make the map feel unreliable until you understand what it is tracking.

Focus on permanent landmarks: Sanctuary, major doors, shortcuts, boss approaches, and ability locations. Yellow mask markers point toward new abilities, and abilities are what open the world. If a side corridor seems unfamiliar on a second pass, keep moving toward the fixed objective.

4. Chase Abilities Before Completion Cleanup

Abilities are the backbone of exploration. Deflecting Shield, Leaping Device, Valkyrie Cannon, Strength Amplifier, Propulsion Engine, Gravitational Boots, and Grappling Hook all change what Eshe can survive or reach. The game expects you to backtrack with these tools, so do not obsess over every blocked path the first time you see it.

When the world opens in several directions, favor routes that lead toward an ability shrine or a major movement tool. A new ability is usually worth more than a small pile of shards because it creates new routes, combat options, and better returns on future exploration.

5. Keep Moving in Combat

Sundered is built around enemy pressure, not careful one-on-one duels in every room. Standing still lets the swarm surround you, drains your shield, and makes projectile patterns harder to read. Movement is defense, offense, and navigation at the same time.

Use jumps, rolls, wall movement, dashes, and air attacks to keep a route open. The mid-air up-attack gives a bit of lift, and hitting enemies can refresh your double jump, so combat can become a platforming tool. Once you earn Strength Amplifier, charged attacks and roll timing can create strong forward momentum.

6. Use the Gun and Finisher with Intent

The Valkyrie Cannon is powerful because it pierces enemies and obstacles, but it introduces ammo management and timing. Do not fire just because enemies are on screen. Save shots for clustered targets, obstacles, or moments where recoil or reach gives you a safer answer than melee.

The finisher meter rewards sustained attacking, then asks you to spend it before pressure or damage wastes the opportunity. If you tend to hold special attacks too long, use the finisher as soon as a large target, boss opening, or dense enemy group appears. A decisive finisher often prevents a messy room from becoming a losing room.

7. Build Perks Around Tradeoffs

Perks are not simple stat stickers. They adjust how Eshe fights, survives, earns resources, or spends them, often by improving one area while weakening another. That is why a strong Perk in one build can feel wrong in another.

Start with dependable choices that match your weakness. If you need consistency, favor health, shield, recovery, or shard-gain support. If you are comfortable dodging, offensive Perks can shorten fights before rooms become crowded. Revisit your loadout after gaining new slots or abilities, because a Perk that was risky early may become excellent once your base tree is stronger.

8. Do Not Fear Red-Banner Pressure Rooms

Red-banner areas are stressful because enemies can keep spawning, but they are also useful. They can be good shard farming spots, and clearing through them can lead to new Perk rewards. Enter them with a plan instead of treating them as random punishment.

Before committing, check your health, shield, and escape options. Once inside, move forward with purpose. If you stop to fight every spawn in the worst part of the room, you may get pinned. If you keep advancing while clearing threats that block your path, the room becomes a challenge route rather than an endless brawl.

9. Choose Elder Shards for the Run You Want

Elder Shards are the big identity choice. Bosses and minibosses feed this system, and you can either corrupt abilities for stronger versions or destroy Shards in the Incinerator to support the resist path and open different tree options. Those choices affect your build, mobility, and endings.

For a first playthrough, do not let route anxiety freeze you. Corrupted abilities can be exciting and powerful, while resisting supports a different style. A mixed route is a reasonable way to learn the game without committing fully to either extreme. Save full-route perfection for a second run or a dedicated endings cleanup.

10. Use Sanctuary as a Planning Screen

Sanctuary is more than a respawn room. It is where you decide what the last run taught you. Before leaving, spend shards, check your Perks, look at the map for permanent objectives, and pick one clear goal for the next attempt.

That goal can be simple: reach a yellow mask, test a new ability gate, farm enough shards for a specific upgrade, or push back to a boss path. Sundered feels much less chaotic when each run has one purpose. If you wander with no target, the changing corridors and enemy waves can make progress feel invisible.

11. Lower Friction Before Blaming Yourself

Because Sundered moves quickly, rough performance or uncomfortable controls can make the game feel harder than intended. If inputs feel late or the image stutters during enemy waves, adjust settings before grinding attempts. Smooth movement matters here.

Also take time to settle on a comfortable layout for jump, dodge, attack, cannon, and finisher use. You need to combine those actions while reacting to crowded rooms. A setup that feels fine in quiet exploration may fail once the screen fills, so tune it early rather than after frustration sets in.

12. Leave Perfect Completion for Later

Sundered supports multiple endings, many upgrades, Perk hunting, and route experimentation. Trying to solve all of that on a first pass can turn a strong metroidvania loop into a checklist. Your first job is to understand movement, survive enemy pressure, and make clear Elder Shard choices.

After you finish, you can return to pursue missed upgrades, alternate endings, Perk collection, and cleaner routes. By then, you will know which abilities you like, which rooms matter, and which build problems were real. The second run is where Sundered becomes much faster.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not hoard shards after every return - permanent upgrades matter more than saving for a perfect future purchase.
  2. Do not memorize every temporary corridor - learn permanent landmarks and ability markers instead.
  3. Do not stand still during enemy waves - movement keeps exits open and prevents your shield from being overwhelmed.
  4. Do not ignore yellow mask markers - new abilities unlock more progress than most small detours.
  5. Do not equip Perks without reading the tradeoff - build around your current weakness, not just a bigger number.
  6. Do not waste cannon shots on harmless targets - save ammo for clusters, obstacles, and safe ranged punishes.
  7. Do not panic in red-banner rooms - advance with a route plan instead of fighting endlessly in place.
  8. Do not commit to a full Elder Shard route from anxiety - a first run can learn through mixed choices.
  9. Do not blame the map for changing side paths - shifting connective rooms are part of the design.
  10. Do not chase full completion before learning the loop - finish a practical first clear, then clean up.

Summary

CategoryTop Tip
First prioritySpend shards often so every failed run still improves Eshe
ExplorationFollow ability markers and permanent landmarks instead of temporary corridors
CombatStay mobile, use air attacks for lift, and spend finishers before pressure wastes them
BuildsPick Perks for the problem you are facing, then revise after new slots or abilities
Elder ShardsTreat resist, embrace, and mixed choices as build paths, not a first-run panic test
MindsetLet the first playthrough teach movement and survival before chasing completion

Sundered becomes much easier to read once you accept its loop: explore, get pressured, return, upgrade, and push farther with a clearer goal. Death feeds the tree, abilities reshape the map, and Perks let you tune Eshe toward survival, damage, or resource flow. Spend your shards, move constantly, respect the Elder Shard choice, and save perfection for a later cleanup run.
