Super Mario Advance Beginner Tips - Characters, Vegetables, and Sub-space

Beginner tips for Super Mario Advance covering character choice, vegetables, Sub-space, hearts, saves, Yoshi's Challenge, and Mario Bros. mode.

On this page

Super Mario Advance is Nintendo R&D2’s Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2, published by Nintendo and packaged with a separate remake of Mario Bros. This guide is for the GBA edition and its later Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 contexts, not the NES original, the Super Mario All-Stars version, or the numbered Super Mario Advance follow-ups.

The most important adjustment is simple: this is a picking-up-and-throwing platformer. You beat many threats by lifting vegetables, enemies, blocks, bombs, and shells, then using each one in the right place. Treat Mario Bros. as a separate included mode, while the main adventure is the Subcon journey with four selectable characters.

Essential Tips

1. Pick Characters for the Room

Mario is safe, but the other three solve different problems.

Mario’s balanced jump, speed, and strength make him the easiest first choice. Luigi helps when height matters, Princess Peach helps when floating gives you more control over gaps, and Toad is useful when fast lifting and movement with items matter more than jump height. If a stage keeps punishing you, changing character after a death is part of the GBA tool kit.

2. Stop Trying to Stomp Everything

Your first weapon is whatever you can lift.

Enemies in this game are often handled by lifting and throwing them or by throwing other objects at them. Vegetables, sprouts, Mushroom Blocks, shells, bombs, and POW Blocks all matter because they let you attack without taking contact damage. Before entering a crowded section, check what the ground or room is already giving you.

3. Pull Vegetables with Space Around You

Heavy objects can punish greedy timing.

Normal vegetables are reliable, but large GBA vegetables take longer to pull. Do not start yanking one out while an enemy is walking into you. Clear the immediate lane first, or use a faster sprout or block when the room is tight.

4. Use Mushroom Blocks as Tools

They are not only throwable objects.

Mushroom Blocks can attack enemies, block hazards, and work as stepping stones. If a ledge looks just out of reach or a projectile path feels unsafe, try thinking of the block as level geometry before throwing it away.

5. Learn the Heart Economy

Survival improves when you create healing instead of waiting for it.

The GBA version uses hearts for the life meter, and hearts can appear after enemy defeats. Chain safe attacks when you can, especially with vegetables, shells, POW Blocks, and crowded enemy groups. A careful throw can clear danger and rebuild your health at the same time.

6. Place Magic Potions Deliberately

Sub-space is useful only if the nearby grass is worth pulling.

Magic Potions reveal doors into Sub-space. That is where you can find stage coins for Bonus Chance and, in the right places, mushrooms that expand and refill your life meter. Do not toss a potion at the first safe patch of ground if there are better grass clusters or suspicious spots nearby.

7. Treat Coins as Extra-Life Chances

Coins are not a normal Mario wallet here.

Coins pulled in Sub-space feed the Bonus Chance slot machine after a stage. If you enter Sub-space in a poor location, you may leave with little benefit. If you enter where several sprouts are available, you improve your post-stage life chances.

8. Use the GBA Safety Net

Save slots and unlimited continues make experimentation reasonable.

Super Mario Advance has save slots, lets you save in sub-worlds, starts with five lives, and gives unlimited continues. Use that freedom to test characters and routes instead of forcing the same bad approach.

9. Remember That Advance Has Extra Rules

This is not a perfect copy of the older versions.

The GBA edition adds and changes enough that old memory can mislead you. It includes Ace Coins, Super Enemies, Super Vegetables, Heart Radishes, Super POW Blocks, points, changed shell behavior, additional mushrooms, Robirdo, and Yoshi’s Challenge after the main game. Use older advice only when it still matches the GBA screen.

10. Finish Stages After Collecting

Cleanup credit often depends on reaching the end.

In Yoshi’s Challenge, eggs count only when you complete the stage after collecting them. You can collect one egg, finish, and return later for the other, so do not turn a good find into a lost run by pushing for everything at once.

11. Separate the Mario Bros. Mode

The included arcade mode is not a second route through Subcon.

Mario Bros. is a separate included mode with multiplayer in compatible contexts. Keep it distinct from the main adventure, where character selection, Sub-space, vegetables, bosses, and stage completion drive progress.

12. Use Rewind as Practice, Not Autopilot

Modern play can make learning cleaner if you still watch what went wrong.

On the Nintendo Classics release, rewind and save-anytime features can help you retry difficult jumps, potion placement, boss throws, or Yoshi’s Challenge cleanup. After a rewind, change the timing or route instead of repeating the same mistake.

Character Habits

CharacterBest Beginner Use
MarioBalanced routes, first attempts, and rooms where you do not know the main obstacle yet
LuigiTall jumps, awkward ledges, and vertical recovery after missed platforming
Princess PeachGap control, careful landings, and sections where a brief float is safer than raw height
ToadFast lifting, item-heavy rooms, and places where carrying speed matters more than jump height

Do not treat one character as the permanent answer. The GBA version lets you switch after defeat, and some stages are easier when you match the character to the obstacle. If the problem is height, try Luigi. If the problem is landing control, try Peach. If the problem is lifting speed, try Toad. If you are learning a stage for the first time, Mario remains the steady baseline.

Sub-space and Cleanup

Sub-space rewards planning. Magic Potion doors are limited opportunities, so look around before placing one. A good entry point can lead to coins for Bonus Chance or a mushroom that expands and refills the life meter. A poor entry point may waste the potion on a nearly empty patch.

For post-clear work, keep Yoshi’s Challenge calm. Two eggs are hidden in Sub-space in each level, but both do not need to be found in one run. Completing the stage after one egg is better than losing that credit while gambling on a risky second search. Ace Coins can be cleaned up along the way, but they do not unlock Yoshi’s Challenge, so do not let them distract you from finishing an egg run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not use one character for every stage - Character strengths exist because different rooms ask for different movement and lifting habits.

  2. Do not rely on stomping enemies - Use the game’s lifting and throwing tools to handle threats instead.

  3. Do not pull giant vegetables under pressure - They are strong, but the longer pull animation can get you hit.

  4. Do not waste Magic Potions on empty ground - Check nearby grass, hidden-item opportunities, and safe placement before opening Sub-space.

  5. Do not ignore mushrooms in Sub-space - They can expand and refill the life meter, which is often stronger than a few rushed coins.

  6. Do not spend cleanup runs chasing everything at once - Finish a stage after important finds, then return for the rest.

  7. Do not apply later Super Mario Advance mechanics here - Super Mario Advance 2, 3, and 4 are separate GBA releases with different base games.

  8. Do not confuse Mario Bros. with the main adventure - It is a separate included mode, not another route through Subcon.
