Teamfight Tactics is Riot Games’ competitive auto-battler about drafting champions, building a team, positioning units, managing gold, and outlasting seven other players. This guide is for new and returning players learning normal, early ranked, and current-set fundamentals.
Content warning: Store listings describe TFT with Teen/13+ descriptors including violence, blood, suggestive themes, fantasy/cartoon violence, weapons, in-game purchases, loot boxes, and chat or messaging. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.
Patch note: This guide is scoped to patch 17.6 and Set 17: Space Gods. It is not a current best-comps guide, Augment tier list, item tier list, ranked LP guide, or Space Gods blessing table.
Essential Tips
1. Play for a Strong Board Before a Perfect Comp
Your first goal is to stop bleeding health.
TFT rewards adaptation. The shop, item drops, Augments, and current-set offerings will not always give the exact units you wanted. Build the strongest board you can from what appears, then move toward a cleaner trait or carry plan once the game gives you a reason.
2. Treat the Shop as Information
Every shop tells you what is easy, contested, or missing.
Do not buy only units from one dream comp. Look for pairs, frontline upgrades, carry candidates, and trait links. If the shop keeps showing a different direction and other players are taking your original units, pivot before the board falls too far behind.
3. Learn What Gold Can Do
Gold buys units, refreshes the shop, and buys experience.
Those three buttons compete with each other. Buying units improves the board now. Rerolling looks for upgrades. Buying experience lets you field more units and access higher-cost champions. A good turn starts by asking which of those actually solves the current problem.
4. Use Interest as a Habit, Not a Prison
Saving gold creates future power, but health matters too.
Interest rewards banking gold in 10-gold steps up to 50. That does not mean every game should greed to 50 while losing every fight. If one roll, one level, or one purchased pair prevents a huge health loss, spending can be correct.
5. Know Why You Are Leveling or Rerolling
Random spending is how strong starts become weak finishes.
Level when another unit slot, better shop odds, or a tempo push improves your board. Reroll when you have pairs, a clear carry path, or immediate danger. If you cannot explain what you are trying to hit, save the gold or buy board strength instead.
6. Build a Frontline and a Backline
Damage dealers need time to work.
Most beginner boards need durable units in front and damage or utility units behind them. If your carry dies before casting, the comp is not functioning. If your tanks survive forever while nothing dies, your backline or items need attention.
7. Put Items on Jobs, Not Names
A good item holder is the unit using the stats right now.
Attack items belong on units that attack well. Defensive items belong on units that absorb damage. Ability items belong on units that cast meaningfully. Exact best holders change by set and patch, so learn the job before memorizing a list.
8. Do Not Hoard Components Forever
Unused items are missing power.
Two components can become a completed item, and units can hold up to three items. Waiting for a perfect recipe can cost too much health. Build useful items when they make your current board stronger, especially if they fit a role you expect to keep.
9. Scout Before Committing Late
The lobby tells you what you can still hit.
Check other boards before spending a pile of gold. If several players are already holding the same carry or trait, your upgrades may become harder to find. Scouting also shows assassins, hooks, clumps, exposed carries, and which side your frontline should protect.
10. Let Augments and Set Mechanics Guide You
Bonuses should narrow your plan, not replace judgment.
Augments give lasting power, resources, or rule changes. In Set 17, Space Gods adds current-set offerings and boons in place of the older carousel flow. Use those choices as direction, but still ask whether your items, units, and lobby support the plan.
11. Play for Top Four Before First Place
Climbing starts with fewer eighths.
New players often throw a playable game chasing the perfect win condition. Stabilize first, preserve health, and accept a fourth-place line when the lobby is too strong. First place usually comes after you learn how not to collapse.
12. Respect Patch-Sensitive Advice
TFT changes too often for old tier lists to be permanent.
Patch 17.6 changed Space Gods balance and Augments, and Riot scheduled the next patch for July 15, 2026. Before copying a comp, item chart, Augment ranking, or exact reroll plan, check that it matches the current patch and set.
Economy Habits
- Count your next interest step: If selling a bench unit reaches the next 10-gold mark without weakening your board, consider it.
- Hold useful pairs: A two-star upgrade can be worth more than a perfect trait link.
- Stop buying every maybe-unit: A crowded bench hides your actual plan and blocks interest.
- Level with a board in mind: Know which extra unit you will field before buying experience.
- Reroll with targets: Roll for pairs, key upgrades, or survival, not because the shop looked boring.
- Stabilize before greed: If every loss is heavy, spend enough to stop taking large damage.
- Recover after spending: A roll-down or level push should be followed by rebuilding economy if the board is stable.
Board and Item Habits
- Protect the carry: Put damage dealers where they can cast or attack without immediately being targeted.
- Move tanks to meet threats: A strong frontline on the wrong side can still fail.
- Inspect ranges: Short-range units may walk into danger; long-range units need clear access to targets.
- Use item holders: A temporary unit can carry items until the final unit appears.
- Avoid three-item clutter on throwaway units: Selling can return items, but a bad holder can waste several rounds of power.
- Watch fight replays mentally: If a unit dies before casting, moves too far, or targets poorly, adjust position next round.
- Reposition late: With fewer opponents alive, small board moves matter more.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Shared champion pool | Other players can make your upgrades harder to find | Scout before forcing a contested carry |
| Interest | Saved gold becomes extra income at breakpoints | Build toward 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 when health allows |
| Streaks | Winning or losing repeatedly can add income | Protect a win streak or lose streak deliberately instead of drifting |
| Experience | Higher levels add unit slots and change shop access | Level when the extra slot or shop quality improves the board |
| Rerolling | Gold can search for upgrades immediately | Roll with targets and stop when the board is stable |
| Item commitment | Items create immediate power but shape future carries | Equip items around roles you can keep using |
| Scouting | Other boards reveal threats and contested units | Check opponents before roll-downs and late-game positioning |
| Augments | Match choices can change resources, combat, or rules | Pick bonuses that match your board, items, and direction |
| Set mechanics | Current sets can replace familiar systems | Treat Space Gods details as Set 17-specific, not permanent TFT rules |
| Patch volatility | Balance changes can move traits, units, and Augments | Treat meta claims as patch-sensitive after updates and new sets |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not force one comp from the first shop - Early shops are suggestions, not a contract.
-
Do not sit on a weak board just to reach 50 gold - Interest does not help if you lose too much health getting there.
-
Do not reroll without a target - Blind rolling burns gold that could become levels, interest, or a stronger bench.
-
Do not level without fielding a useful unit - Buying experience is weaker when the extra slot adds nothing.
-
Do not put all damage items on a unit that dies first - Item power only matters while the holder can fight.
-
Do not ignore frontline upgrades - Backline carries need tanks long enough to cast and attack.
-
Do not leave carries in the same corner every round - Opponents can punish predictable positioning.
-
Do not take every Augment as if it fits every board - A powerful bonus can still be wrong for your units, items, or economy.
-
Do not chase first place from a low-health spot - Stabilize for placement before gambling on a perfect finish.
-
Do not keep playing old carousel habits in Set 17 - Space Gods changes that flow during this set.
