The Banner Saga 2 is a tactical RPG developed by Stoic. This guide is for the standalone second game, not the first The Banner Saga, The Banner Saga 3, or a trilogy walkthrough. Storefront credits differ by platform, so this guide uses developer-first wording.
Use this as a spoiler-light first-run guide for combat, Renown, camp, training, and caravan habits. It does not include exact choice consequences, imported-save outcomes, character availability routes, battle-by-battle solutions, Survival Mode numerical details, achievement cleanup, or ending details.
Content warning: Official storefronts list Teen descriptors for Alcohol Reference, Blood, Mild Language, and Violence. Additional reviewed content guidance notes war, grief, non-graphic death/funeral imagery, mead/drunkenness references, mild language, and brief suggestive dialogue with nothing shown.
Difficulty note: The turn-based controls are readable, but the tactical systems can be underexplained. Treat the first hours as systems training, not as a test of perfect routing.
Essential Tips
1. Start With the Right Game Scope
Banner Saga 2 advice should not automatically become trilogy advice.
The second game can account for earlier choices if you import a first-game save, but storefronts also support starting fresh with preset characters. If you are using a guide, make sure it is for The Banner Saga 2 specifically and not a first-game, third-game, or full-trilogy route.
2. Learn Armor Before Chasing Kills
Damage makes more sense once you understand the blue number.
Armor protects Strength, and Strength is both health and damage potential. When an enemy has high Armor, breaking Armor first can make later Strength attacks matter. When an enemy’s Strength is already low, it is also less threatening on its own turns.
3. Spend Willpower for a Purpose
Extra movement and extra damage are valuable because they are limited.
Willpower can extend movement, power abilities, and improve attacks through Exertion. Do not drain it just to reach the farthest tile if the attack afterward is weak or unsafe. Save it for finishing blows, key Armor breaks, important abilities, and positioning that protects the party.
4. Deploy Around Turn Order, Not Just Distance
A front-row unit that acts late can be punished before it moves.
Before the battle starts, check who acts early and who acts late. Keep vulnerable archers, menders, and support units out of easy reach, and put defenders or blockers where they can act before enemies collapse on them.
5. Read the Objective Before Fighting Normally
Not every Banner Saga 2 battle is just a wipeout.
The sequel adds objectives, interactable elements, destructible environments, and different win conditions. If the battle gives you a goal, play toward that goal instead of assuming every enemy must be defeated first.
6. Use Obstacles as Tools
Cover and destructible terrain can change the first few turns.
Obstacles can block damage, slow paths, protect back-line units, or become part of an objective. If an enemy is lined up behind a destructible object, check whether breaking it creates a better attack than walking around it.
7. Treat Renown as Both Growth and Supplies
A promotion is not the only thing competing for the same resource.
Renown supports hero progression, but it also ties into market purchases such as supplies and items. Before spending it all on one favorite hero, check the caravan’s immediate needs and whether an item, supply purchase, or broader promotion plan matters more.
8. Choose Talents Deliberately
Talent choices are not casual toggles.
Banner Saga 2 adds talent paths tied to Strength, Willpower, Exertion, Armor, and Break. Once you commit to a talent path for a stat, do not assume you can freely reverse it later. Save exact builds for a dedicated build guide and focus first on what each hero already does well.
9. Use Training Scenarios
Training is where objective combat becomes readable.
The Training Tent can offer scenarios with goals, Renown rewards, and no injury from knockouts inside the scenario. Use those fights to practice shield lines, pushing, range, ability timing, and objective thinking before relying on them in the campaign.
10. Keep Morale and Injuries in View
The caravan layer can affect the next fight.
After hard travel or battles, check camp and rest options instead of rushing forward with a battered group. Morale and injury recovery can matter more than squeezing one more travel segment out of an already strained caravan.
11. Let Range Decide Who Moves First
Different classes threaten different spaces.
Archers, spearmen, throwers, Varl, and melee units do not project danger the same way. Check ranges before committing a move, especially when Willpower tiles tempt you to overextend into an enemy’s best attack.
12. Save Survival Mode for a Separate Mindset
It is not just the campaign with fewer cutscenes.
Survival Mode focuses on battle endurance, hero selection, rewards, and its own challenge rules. It can also reveal campaign battle context. Finish or at least understand the campaign basics before treating Survival Mode as your main learning path.
Combat Habits
| Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Break Armor before high-value Strength attacks | Armor reduces Strength damage, so softening a target can make later hits count |
| Lower dangerous Strength when a kill is not available | A weakened enemy has less damage potential on its turn |
| Save Willpower for decisive actions | Movement, abilities, and Exertion all compete for the same resource |
| Protect late-acting units in deployment | Turn order can expose a front-line unit before it acts |
| Check range before spending Willpower | Extra tiles are only useful if the final position is safe and productive |
| Use obstacles deliberately | Terrain can block, slow, shield, or set up objective play |
| Practice in Training Scenarios | Scenario knockouts do not create normal injuries, and the goals teach mechanics |
| Recheck camp after hard stretches | Rest, training, upgrades, and market decisions all connect to the next fight |
Campaign and Mode Scope
| Topic | Beginner Scope |
|---|---|
| Standalone game | This guide covers The Banner Saga 2, not the full trilogy |
| Previous save | Import can matter, but exact outcomes need a planned route guide |
| Fresh start | Storefronts support starting with preset characters |
| Choices | Avoid consequence lists on a first run unless you want spoilers |
| Renown | Spend with both hero growth and caravan needs in mind |
| Talents | Pick around a hero’s role; save exact builds for later |
| Training | Use scenarios to learn objective play and ability interactions |
| Survival Mode | Treat as a separate spoiler-sensitive challenge mode |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not read a trilogy route as a Banner Saga 2 guide - First-game and third-game advice can mix in systems and spoilers outside this game.
-
Do not attack high-Armor enemies blindly - Break Armor when direct Strength damage will barely move the fight.
-
Do not spend all Willpower on movement - Reaching a distant tile is not useful if the unit arrives drained and exposed.
-
Do not place vulnerable units up front just because they start closer - Deployment and turn order decide who gets punished first.
-
Do not ignore battle objectives - Some fights ask for more than defeating every enemy.
-
Do not skip obstacles as background art - Cover, blockage, and destructible objects can change the safest line.
-
Do not spend Renown before checking caravan needs - Promotions, items, and supplies can compete for the same resource.
-
Do not choose talents as placeholders - Talent paths should support the hero’s role because they are not simple toggles.
-
Do not avoid Training Scenarios after one failed attempt - Retry them to learn objective rules without normal injury pressure.
-
Do not treat Survival Mode as spoiler-free practice - It is a separate combat challenge and can expose campaign context.
