The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon is the second expansion for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. This guide covers Bloodmoon as its own expansion: Solstheim, Fort Frostmoth, Raven Rock, the East Empire Company colony, Skaal progression, werewolf risk, and the Bloodmoon quest structure.
Bloodmoon is not base Morrowind, Tribunal, Skyrim, Skyrim’s Dragonborn DLC, or a modded Solstheim overhaul. On modern PC storefronts, the practical access point is usually Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, which includes Bloodmoon and Tribunal. The expansion still expects Morrowind fundamentals, so this is a beginner-friendly guide for entering Bloodmoon, not a promise that Solstheim is beginner-level content.
Content note: Bloodmoon is rated T for Teen with Blood and Violence. This guide keeps combat, hunting, and werewolf topics non-graphic and gameplay-focused.
Essential Tips
1. Confirm You Are Actually Playing Bloodmoon
Your first job is scope control.
If your launcher says Morrowind Game of the Year Edition, Bloodmoon should be part of the package alongside Tribunal. That does not make every Morrowind or Tribunal objective Bloodmoon content. For this expansion, look for Solstheim, Fort Frostmoth, Raven Rock, the Skaal, the Bloodmoon Prophecy, Hircine’s Hunt, and East Empire Company colony work.
Keep Skyrim knowledge separate. Skyrim’s Dragonborn DLC also uses Solstheim, but it is a different game, a different era, and a different ruleset. Bloodmoon uses Morrowind’s combat, travel, magic, disease, journal, and reputation logic.
2. Bring a Real Morrowind Character, Not a Fresh Tourist
Beginner-friendly planning does not mean low-level routing.
Bloodmoon lets existing Morrowind characters continue into Solstheim, and the island is built around dangerous wilderness, caves, new creatures, and werewolves. Before you commit to long sessions there, make sure your character can survive ordinary Morrowind travel, heal reliably, handle carry weight, and deal damage without running out of resources.
Treat your first trip as a scouting trip. Bring restore health options, fatigue support, repair tools or backups, disease handling, intervention options, and enough inventory space to return with loot instead of abandoning supplies in the snow.
3. Use Fort Frostmoth as Your First Anchor
The expansion introduces itself through Imperial territory.
Bloodmoon’s main quest flow begins around travel to Solstheim and Fort Frostmoth concerns before it moves deeper into Skaal and werewolf material. When you arrive, slow down. Talk to relevant NPCs, read your journal updates, and avoid sprinting off into the interior just because the island looks open.
Fort Frostmoth also gives you a safer mental reset point. If you get turned around, low on supplies, or overloaded, return there before pushing north. Bloodmoon has bigger outdoor stretches than Tribunal, and careless wandering can turn a simple errand into a survival problem.
4. Save Before Every Major Branch
Bloodmoon uses meaningful route splits.
The main quest includes a werewolf infection point and separates later quests depending on whether you remain human or become a werewolf. The East Empire Company line also asks you to make choices around Raven Rock’s direction. Keep manual saves before disease decisions, faction choices, and colony decisions.
Do not rely on one rolling save. Morrowind’s older quest structure can leave you with consequences that are interesting when chosen deliberately and frustrating when triggered by accident.
5. Respect Werewolves Before You Meet Them
They are not just another wildlife variant.
Bloodmoon werewolves are fast, strong, durable, and especially dangerous in groups. Carry tools that help you control space, slow enemies, or survive a sudden melee collapse. Silver weapons and fire-based options are particularly worth considering, and crowd control can matter more than raw damage when multiple werewolves close in.
If you contract Sanies Lupinus, treat it as an urgent decision point. Becoming a werewolf opens a different style of play, but it is not a casual cosmetic toggle. Save, read your journal, and decide whether you want that route before sleeping or waiting through the disease window.
6. Separate the Main Quest From the Colony Quest
Solstheim has more than one center of gravity.
The Bloodmoon main quest moves through Fort Frostmoth, Skaal tests, werewolf pressure, and Hircine’s Hunt. The East Empire Company questline is optional and focuses on Raven Rock, the ebony mine, and whether the colony succeeds or fails.
You can enjoy both, but do not blur them into one checklist. If your active task involves Carnius Magius, Falco Galenus, Raven Rock construction, missing shipments, or shop decisions, you are probably in colony content. If it involves the Skaal tests, the Bloodmoon Prophecy, or werewolf branch consequences, you are in the main expansion arc.
7. Watch Raven Rock Change Over Time
The colony is a progression system, not just a location.
Raven Rock begins as a bare patch of snow and develops as East Empire Company work advances. That means your choices and quest progress can affect what the settlement looks like and how useful it becomes. Visit it deliberately, note what has been built, and avoid assuming a guide for a later colony stage applies to your current one.
Boat travel connects Raven Rock and Fort Frostmoth, which makes the colony easier to manage once you know the rhythm. The trail through Hirstaang Forest is quicker than it first appears, but it is still risky if you leave without healing, fatigue recovery, or a plan to get back.
8. Keep Intervention Magic in Your Escape Plan
Bloodmoon travel can send you farther than expected.
Raven Rock has useful intervention behavior: Divine Intervention points you toward Fort Frostmoth, while Almsivi Intervention can send you back to Gnisis. That matters because Solstheim can stretch supplies, and a bad fight or overloaded inventory is easier to solve when you know where your escape spells or scrolls will send you.
If you do not use intervention magic, create a different exit plan. Carry potions, mark a useful recall spot, or schedule regular returns to Fort Frostmoth and Raven Rock instead of wandering until your pack and fatigue bar both collapse.
9. Treat New Gear as Opportunity, Not a Build Plan
Bloodmoon adds equipment, but this is not an item-location route.
The expansion adds new weapons, armor, creatures, and crafting-related interests around Solstheim. Nordic Mail, Ice blades, Stalhrim context, and other island-specific rewards are part of the appeal, but a first tips run should not become a treasure-map checklist.
Use what you find if it supports your existing character. If you want exact Stalhrim, armor, weapon, or reward routing, save that for a dedicated guide and keep this first run focused on survival, branch awareness, and learning Solstheim’s geography.
10. Let Bloodmoon Be Bloodmoon
Its best ideas are exploration, colony pressure, and werewolf consequence.
Bloodmoon is more open than Tribunal and more tightly scoped than base Morrowind. Give it room to work. Explore the snowy island, learn which settlements matter, watch Raven Rock develop, and decide how much werewolf risk you want in your playthrough.
The expansion is strongest when you stop treating it as a small add-on errand and start treating Solstheim as a dangerous new region with its own politics, wilderness, and rules.
Solstheim Priorities
| Priority | What to Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Use Morrowind GOTY access but follow Bloodmoon leads only | You avoid mixing Tribunal, Skyrim, and base-game advice |
| Readiness | Enter with a stable Morrowind character | Solstheim expects survival tools and combat competence |
| Hub | Establish Fort Frostmoth before roaming | It gives your first safe anchor on the island |
| Saves | Keep manual saves before disease and colony choices | Bloodmoon has branch-heavy questing |
| Werewolves | Prepare silver, fire, control, and healing options | Packs can overwhelm careless characters |
| Raven Rock | Revisit the colony as it develops | Its buildings and usefulness change with progress |
Systems to Respect
-
Expansion Access - Bloodmoon usually arrives through Morrowind Game of the Year Edition today, but its mechanics are still Morrowind expansion mechanics.
-
Solstheim Travel - The island has open wilderness, snowy spaces, caves, and risky paths, so plan return routes before long walks.
-
Disease Decisions - Sanies Lupinus is a route decision, not just a status effect to ignore.
-
East Empire Company Choices - Raven Rock content can pull you into colony success or failure decisions.
-
Werewolf Combat - Packs, speed, and durability change the fight; use control and preparation rather than trading blows blindly.
-
Older RPG Saves - Manual save discipline protects you from accidental branch commitments and quest-state surprises.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not follow Skyrim Solstheim advice - Bloodmoon uses Morrowind systems, not Dragonborn systems.
-
Do not enter Solstheim with an unprepared fresh character - the island can punish weak combat, poor healing, and bad travel planning.
-
Do not treat Fort Frostmoth as optional background - it is your first practical anchor for Bloodmoon progression.
-
Do not ignore Sanies Lupinus - decide whether you want the werewolf route before time passes.
-
Do not overwrite your only save before branch choices - keep clean manual saves before major quest and colony decisions.
-
Do not fight werewolf packs like ordinary animals - control space, use the right tools, and retreat when needed.
-
Do not expect Raven Rock to look the same all game - colony progress changes what is available and what matters.
-
Do not chase every new item on your first visit - learn the island first, then return for exact gear routes.
