The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal Beginner Tips

Beginner tips for The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal covering Mournhold access, quest order, city layout, preparation, and late-game hazards.

On this page

The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal is Morrowind’s first expansion, built around Mournhold, the Dark Brotherhood opening, palace and temple quest lines, deep ruins, and the Clockwork City. It expects you to bring a Morrowind character, but it is not Bloodmoon, not a later Elder Scrolls entry, and not a mod setup checklist.

This tips guide keeps the focus on getting started, moving around Mournhold, and avoiding the traps that make Tribunal feel harsher than the base game. Combat and assassination themes are part of the expansion, so expect fantasy violence and blood without graphic detail here.

Essential Tips

1. Start Tribunal by Resting, Not Waiting

Tribunal begins when your character rests and a Dark Brotherhood assassin interrupts sleep. Waiting is not the trigger. If you want to start the expansion, rest somewhere you can fight or escape, survive the attack, then report it to a normal guard.

2. Treat the First Assassin as a Gear Check

The opening assassin can be dangerous for a fresh character. If the fight feels unfair, leave Tribunal alone for a while and build your character through Morrowind’s guild, house, or main quests. You are not locked into Mournhold just because the expansion is installed.

3. Follow the Ebonheart Chain Carefully

After the attack, a guard points you to Apelles Matius in Ebonheart. He sends you to Asciene Rane in the Grand Council Chamber, and she transports you to Mournhold. Once there, speak with a Royal Guard or High Ordinator to close the opening step and learn where to look next.

4. Remember Who Sends You Home

Asciene Rane takes you to Mournhold, but Effe-Tei in the Royal Palace takes you back to Ebonheart. Keep that name in mind before selling loot, changing quests, or deciding whether your character is ready for another dungeon.

5. Learn Mournhold Before Diving Underground

Mournhold is bounded, but it has several distinct districts. Walk the Royal Palace, Temple Courtyard, Plaza Brindisi Dorom, Great Bazaar, and Godsreach before following sewer leads. Knowing the city layout makes every later errand easier.

6. Use the Great Bazaar and Godsreach as Anchors

The Great Bazaar gives you merchants and a sewer route. Godsreach has residences, services, a tavern, the Craftsmen’s Hall, and the Museum of Artifacts. These areas are useful places to reset, shop, and orient yourself between heavier quests.

7. Alternate Palace and Temple Work

Tribunal’s main path is not one straight ladder. The Royal Palace side centers on Tienius Delitian and King Helseth, while the Temple side advances through Almalexia’s people. If one side stops moving, switch to the other instead of assuming you missed a wilderness clue.

8. Save Before Major Transitions

The expansion uses scripted travel and contained spaces. Make clean saves before accepting transport, entering major ruins, or leaving for the Clockwork City. Tribunal is manageable when you can step back from a bad decision.

9. Keep Mobility Tools Available

Early in the expansion, intervention or recall magic can help if the opening assassin is too much. Later, speed, jump, acrobatics, and strength boosts can matter in Clockwork City traps and mechanisms, so do not treat utility items as vendor trash.

10. Do Not Enter Clockwork City Lightly

The final stretch is a commitment. Once Almalexia sends you there, ordinary teleportation and levitation do not carry you out. Bring healing, mobility support, strong combat gear, and enough supplies before saying you are ready.

11. Respect Mechanical Hazards

Clockwork City is not just another ruin full of enemies. It includes swinging blades, spike traps, a dangerous saw sequence, strength-gated machinery, Fabricants, and a hard construct fight. Slow observation beats rushing.

12. Keep One Valuable Artifact in Reserve

Mournhold’s Museum of Artifacts can buy elite artifacts, but holding one back can help later in Tribunal’s main path. Sell carefully, especially if you are trying to turn old Morrowind trophies into spending money.

Quest Flow

Tribunal opens with an attack, then sends you through Ebonheart into Mournhold. The expansion’s early rhythm is simple: survive, ask guards, travel to the capital, then investigate the Dark Brotherhood beneath the city. After that, the route widens into palace work, temple work, and local side quests.

Do not look for a large wilderness loop like base Morrowind. Tribunal is more concentrated. The city and its underground spaces are the structure. When you feel stuck, talk to the palace and temple contacts again, then check whether a district quest, sewer route, or main branch has opened.

The late path narrows again. Clockwork City asks for preparation more than wandering. You should already understand your combat style, have healing covered, and carry mobility options before accepting that trip.

City Navigation

Use the Royal Palace as your travel hub. It is central, it is where you arrive, and it is where Effe-Tei can return you to Ebonheart. From there, learn the connections to the Temple Courtyard, Plaza Brindisi Dorom, Great Bazaar, and Godsreach.

The Great Bazaar is your practical shopping and sewer district. Godsreach is better for residences, services, and the Museum of Artifacts. Plaza Brindisi Dorom becomes important as events escalate. The Temple Courtyard matters for Almalexia’s side of the story.

Levitation is not part of normal Mournhold travel. Treat gates, trapdoors, teleporters, and district connections as the intended routes. If you keep a mental map of each district’s exits, the city feels compact instead of confusing.

Preparation

Tribunal rewards a character who can survive close fights and carry flexible tools. Bring healing potions, keep mobility support available, and be ready for tough melee pressure. If the opening assassin is already draining your resources, improve your character before pushing deeper.

For Clockwork City, pack as if you cannot casually leave. Speed boosts, jump, or acrobatics help with movement hazards. Strength boosts can matter for machinery. Bring the combat and healing tools your class already relies on, because the late construct fight hits hard.

Also manage loot before long runs. Mournhold gives you merchants and artifact options, but overloading yourself before ruins makes every return trip worse. Sell ordinary extras, store backup equipment, and keep the special gear you may still need.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not rest in cramped rooms to trigger the first assassin - Give yourself room to dodge, cast, or retreat.
  2. Do not assume guards will save you from the opening attack - Prepare to win or escape on your own.
  3. Do not forget Apelles Matius after reporting the attack - He is the link between the assassin clue and transport to Mournhold.
  4. Do not wander into sewers before learning the districts - A short city tour makes the underground routes less disorienting.
  5. Do not grind only one main branch when it stops advancing - Switch between palace and temple contacts.
  6. Do not sell every artifact as soon as the museum offers gold - Keep at least one strong candidate in reserve.
  7. Do not enter Clockwork City without mobility and healing - That route expects supplies and commitment.
  8. Do not rely on levitation or normal teleportation in restricted areas - Tribunal deliberately limits those habits.

Summary

CategoryTop Tip
Starting OutRest to trigger the first assassin, then follow the guard, Apelles, and Asciene Rane chain.
MournholdLearn the five districts before chasing sewer objectives.
Quest OrderAlternate palace and temple work when one path slows down.
SuppliesCarry healing, mobility, and strength support before late quests.
Clockwork CityEnter only when you are ready to finish a dangerous contained route.

Tribunal is easiest when you treat it as a focused city expansion rather than another open wilderness region. Build enough strength in Morrowind, learn Mournhold’s layout, keep travel NPCs straight, and prepare hard before the Clockwork City.
