The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Dragonborn is the original Skyrim add-on developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. This guide covers the Dragonborn DLC itself: Solstheim, Raven Rock, Black Books, Apocrypha, Bend Will, dragon riding, Dragon Aspect, and Stalhrim.
Content warning: Skyrim is rated M for Mature 17+ for blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, and use of alcohol. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on gameplay.
Dragonborn is not Creation Club content. In original Skyrim, it is paid DLC; in Legendary Edition it is bundled with Dawnguard and Hearthfire; in Special Edition, Switch Edition, Skyrim VR, and Anniversary Edition, it is part of the included add-on set. Anniversary Edition adds separate Creation Club/Creations context on top of that, so do not mix later Creation quests into a Dragonborn route.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Dragonborn as Its Own Add-on
Your edition changes ownership, not the DLC’s identity.
If you are playing original Skyrim, confirm the Dragonborn DLC or Legendary Edition is installed. If you are playing Special Edition, Switch Edition, Skyrim VR, or Anniversary Edition, Dragonborn is part of the add-on package. Keep Anniversary’s Creation Club and newer Creations separate when you follow Dragonborn advice.
2. Use the Natural Quest Hook
The DLC is meant to connect back to the main Skyrim quest.
The normal Dragonborn opening follows early main-quest progress, then points you toward Windhelm’s docks and passage on the Northern Maiden. If you sail to Solstheim before you are comfortable with Skyrim’s core combat, shouts, inventory, and saves, the island can feel like a sharp difficulty jump.
3. Arrive With Room, Gold, and Supplies
Solstheim is a separate landmass with its own loop.
Empty some inventory before boarding, bring healing, resistances, lockpicks, soul gems, and a few backup weapons or spells, then make a manual save before committing to major quest steps. You will find services on Solstheim, but your first hour is cleaner when you are not already overloaded.
4. Make Raven Rock Your First Base
Do not sprint past the arrival hub.
Raven Rock is where the DLC starts to open up. Use its inn, shops, mine, dock, crafting stations, and local quests to stabilize before pushing deep into ash wastes, ruins, and Apocrypha content.
5. Follow the Main Quest Until the New Systems Explain Themselves
Dragonborn teaches its most important tools through progression.
Bend Will, All-Maker Stones, Black Books, Apocrypha, and dragon riding are tied to the DLC’s main quest. Explore side content, but avoid judging the expansion before it has handed you the systems it is built around.
6. Save Dragon Souls for DLC Shouts
The new shout tools are not just flavor.
Bend Will is central to Dragonborn progression, and Dragon Aspect is one of the add-on’s major shout rewards. If you spend every dragon soul the moment you earn it, you may slow down access to the DLC tools you came to Solstheim to use.
7. Read Black Books Like Mini-Dungeons
They are not normal books.
Black Books send you into Apocrypha when read under the right conditions on Solstheim. Expect chapter navigation, hazards, restore fonts, containers, and fights rather than a simple menu reward.
8. Respect Apocrypha’s Environmental Damage
The realm is dangerous even between enemies.
Seekers and Lurkers are only part of the problem. Corrosive water, darkness in some areas, moving paths, and chapter gates can punish rushing, so move carefully and keep healing or restoration options ready.
9. Choose Black Book Rewards Deliberately
Most choices are flexible, but not casual.
Only one reward from a Black Book area can usually be active at a time, and most can be changed later by returning to the book. Pick the reward that supports what you are doing now instead of chasing an unsourced universal “best” option.
10. Understand Dragon Riding Before Relying on It
You command the dragon; you do not fly it like a mount.
Dragon riding uses Bend Will and command inputs for targets, attacks, and landing. It is useful and dramatic, but it is not free-flight control, and it does not replace normal travel between Skyrim and Solstheim.
11. Treat Stalhrim as a Crafting Project
It has prerequisites.
Stalhrim crafting is not just a matter of finding a deposit. Plan around the Ebony Smithing perk, the Stalhrim questline, and the ancient Nordic pickaxe before you build a whole character plan around Stalhrim gear.
12. Avoid Build Claims Until You Test Them
Dragonborn adds powerful tools, but exact optimization is version-sensitive.
Dragon Aspect, Bend Will, Black Book rewards, Stalhrim enchantments, followers, summons, and transformation interactions can all affect builds. For a first Solstheim run, use broad roles instead: survivability, reliable damage, crowd control, and enough carry capacity to finish long dungeons.
Solstheim Priorities
| Priority | What to Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Check Raven Rock services and crafting stations | You get a safer base before exploring the island |
| Main hook | Advance until Bend Will and Black Books are introduced | The DLC’s core systems depend on quest progress |
| Exploration | Mark settlements, stones, ruins, and travel routes | Solstheim’s terrain can make backtracking expensive |
| Apocrypha | Save before reading books and move slowly through chapters | Hazards and chapter navigation punish careless rushing |
| Shouts | Keep dragon souls available for DLC shout unlocks | Bend Will and Dragon Aspect are major Dragonborn tools |
| Crafting | Delay Stalhrim planning until prerequisites are met | The gear path needs quest progress, Smithing, and a pickaxe |
Systems to Respect
-
Black Books - Read them as repeatable reward hubs with dangerous Apocrypha runs attached, not as simple collectibles.
-
Bend Will - Progression turns this shout from Stone-cleansing utility into ally control and dragon riding, so keep it central to your DLC plan.
-
Dragon Aspect - Use it as a high-impact shout option, but avoid building around exact bonuses until your version and route are verified.
-
Dragon Riding - Use command-based targeting and landing deliberately; do not count on direct steering or cross-worldspace travel.
-
Raven Rock Quests - Local quests, services, mine access, and eventual housing make the town more than a dock.
-
Stalhrim - Treat it as a late crafting branch that needs specific prerequisites, not an early loot shortcut.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not confuse Dragonborn with Anniversary Creation content - later Creations can send you to different quests and items that are outside this DLC route.
-
Do not sail to Solstheim with a full inventory - long ruins, Black Books, and island loot will bury your carry weight quickly.
-
Do not skip Raven Rock services on arrival - sell, craft, rest, and resupply before chasing distant markers.
-
Do not spend every dragon soul before unlocking DLC shouts - Dragonborn asks you to use new shout progression.
-
Do not read Black Books outside Solstheim expecting a full Apocrypha trip - their transport behavior is tied to Solstheim conditions.
-
Do not rush through Apocrypha’s water, darkness, and moving paths - the environment is part of the dungeon.
-
Do not assume dragon riding gives direct control - use commands and plan your landing before the fight gets messy.
-
Do not plan a Stalhrim build before meeting the crafting requirements - the material path needs quest progress, Smithing, and the right tool.
