The Messenger, developed by Sabotage and published by Devolver Digital, is a side-scrolling action-platformer built around sword attacks, jumping, Cloudstep chains, upgrades, bosses, and optional challenge rooms.
This guide covers base-game beginner habits. It does not include a full walkthrough, exact Power Seal routes, boss-pattern scripts, achievement cleanup, or Picnic Panic DLC routing.
A note on difficulty: The Messenger is approachable, but it is still a precision platformer. Checkpoints are generous, yet bosses and optional challenge rooms can ask for clean movement and repeated attempts.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Cloudstep as Your Main Movement Tool
Air attacks are also movement buttons.
Cloudstep lets you jump again after landing a hit in the air. Early on, start reading enemies, lanterns, and other hittable objects as stepping stones, not only as targets.
2. Hit With a Purpose in the Air
A Cloudstep chain is strongest when every slash has a destination.
Before attacking in midair, know whether the hit is meant to reach a platform, extend a jump, cross a gap, or set up the next target. Slashing randomly can spend your timing before the room’s real route starts.
3. Learn the Room Before Chasing the Bonus
Optional challenge rooms are not required first-clear work.
Power Seals are built as optional tests. If a challenge room is slowing the main route down, leave it for cleanup after you have more movement tools and steadier Cloudstep timing.
4. Spend Time Shards on Tools, Not Comfort Alone
Upgrades change what mistakes you can survive and what routes you can use.
Health, Ki, projectile control, recovery, and movement upgrades all matter. When the shop opens, think about which problem is actually costing you attempts: damage, range, projectiles, recovery, or movement access.
5. Do Not Farm While Quarble Is Collecting
A death can temporarily make new shards less useful.
After Quarble revives you, he takes newly collected Time Shards for a short period. If you just died, focus on clearing the section first instead of immediately farming shard drops.
6. Use Projectiles as Future Platforms
Projectile control becomes movement control once the right upgrade is available.
When you gain the ability to strike enemy projectiles, start looking for places where destroying a projectile also creates another Cloudstep. This can turn dangerous shots into route extensions.
7. Glide to Control Height, Not Just Distance
The Wingsuit is a timing tool.
Holding jump in the air slows descent, and wind tunnels can carry you upward. In glide rooms, avoid holding the button out of habit; tap or release when you need a sharper fall.
8. Aim the Rope Dart Before Committing
Later traversal is about choosing the correct anchor.
The Rope Dart can pull you toward rings, lanterns, walls, enemies, switches, and other targets. Before firing, identify whether the pull should carry you through, into a wall, or onto the next object in sequence.
9. Save Exact Power Seal Cleanup for Later
Some seal rooms expect specific upgrades.
The base game has many Power Seal challenges, and some require particular shop upgrades or movement tools. Mark the room mentally, keep progressing, and return when your kit is broader.
10. Keep Picnic Panic Separate
The free DLC is its own route.
If you are following this guide, use it for the base game. Do not mix DLC collectibles or island routing into base-game cleanup until a separate Picnic Panic guide is available.
Movement Tips
- Attack through jumps: If an enemy or lantern is safely placed, use it to refresh your jump arc.
- Look past the first target: Cloudstep chains fail when you only plan the first hit.
- Hold glide with intention: Use the Wingsuit to slow a fall or ride wind, then release when you need tighter control.
- Use walls as resets: A wall cling or Rope Dart pull can stabilize a room before the next jump.
- Respect knockback: Recovery tools help, but positioning before contact is still safer than reacting afterward.
Resource Management
- Time Shards: Spend them on upgrades that solve your current failure point.
- Ki charges: Treat ranged attacks as utility, especially when an enemy is unsafe to approach.
- Health: Upgrade survivability when normal rooms are draining too much before checkpoints.
- Quarble penalty: After a revive, move forward instead of collecting low-value shards immediately.
- Power Seals: Treat seals as optional mastery checks, not required main-route currency.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Does | How to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudstep | Grants another jump after an air hit | Slash enemies, lanterns, and valid objects to extend routes |
| Projectile Cloudstep | Lets some projectiles become Cloudstep targets after the right upgrade | Wait for a clean shot, destroy it, then jump from the hit |
| Time Shards | Currency for shop upgrades and hints | Collect steadily, but spend around your actual bottleneck |
| Quarble | Revives you at a checkpoint and temporarily takes new shards | Clear the danger first, then resume collecting |
| Wingsuit | Slows descent and works with wind | Feather your glide instead of holding it constantly |
| Rope Dart | Pulls you to valid targets | Aim at the object that sets up the next safe position |
| Power Seals | Optional challenge-room collectibles | Return later when upgrades and movement timing are stronger |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not ignore Cloudstep targets - Passing enemies or lanterns without using them can make a jump harder than intended.
- Avoid slashing in midair with no landing plan - A mistimed attack can leave you short of the next platform.
- Do not spend every shard without a goal - Buy upgrades that address the section currently stopping you.
- Avoid farming immediately after a death - Quarble can take new shards while the penalty is active.
- Do not force every Power Seal on first sight - Some optional rooms are better after more upgrades.
- Avoid mixing DLC cleanup into base-game cleanup - Picnic Panic has its own content and should be routed separately.
