The Surge 2 Beginner Tips - Limb Targeting, Parries, and Scrap

Beginner tips for The Surge 2 covering limb targeting, directional parries, Tech Scrap, batteries, injectables, implants, armor, drones, and shortcuts.

On this page

The Surge 2 is a sci-fi action RPG developed by Deck13 and published by Focus Entertainment. You wake inside quarantined Jericho City, build a combat rig around weapons, armor, implants, drones, and batteries, and survive by learning exactly which enemy parts to attack.

Content warning: The Surge 2 is rated Mature 17+ for blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, and strong language, with online user interaction features. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on combat, builds, and progression.

This is a beginner systems guide for the base game and broad DLC-era item pool. It does not replace a full boss route, exact V2.0 weapon checklist, The Kraken Expansion walkthrough, or achievement cleanup plan.

Essential Tips

1. Target the part you actually want

Limb targeting is the heart of The Surge 2. Unarmored parts are easier to damage, which is useful when you just need an enemy dead. Armored parts are slower work, but cutting them off is how you earn schematics, crafting materials, and many weapons.

Before you start swinging, decide whether the fight is about survival or loot. If you need healing charge, scrap, or space, hit the weak part and finish quickly. If you need a helmet, arm, leg, chest piece, or weapon, stay locked on and keep pressure on that part until the finisher is ready.

2. Learn directional parries early

The Directional Parry Analyzer is worth using while you learn enemy animations. Normal blocking can save you, but directional blocking is the stronger answer when you read the incoming angle and time the input correctly.

Do not treat this like a pure dodge game. Many enemies track hard enough that panic rolls make fights messier. Hold your ground, watch the attack line, and use dodges for unblockable attacks, bad spacing, or repositioning. A clean parry often gives you a better punish window than another retreat.

3. Fight aggressively enough to power your tools

Batteries are not decoration. They feed finishers and injectable charges, so a timid style can leave you without the healing or finisher you need. The trick is controlled aggression: land enough hits to build charge, then spend it before a greedy combo gets you killed.

Go into bosses with healing prepared. If you know a boss room is coming, build charge on weaker enemies nearby, refresh injectables, and then start the attempt with a real buffer.

4. Bank Tech Scrap before curiosity takes over

Tech Scrap buys upgrades and progression, but dying drops it at the death spot. Medical Bays let you bank it, so use them when you are carrying enough to care about losing.

There is one wrinkle: dropped scrap can help during the recovery run by healing you nearby and when picked up. That can save a boss attempt, but it is still a risk. Use that trick intentionally, not because you forgot to bank after clearing a hard route.

5. Spend core power like a build budget

Armor and implants both draw from core power. That means the best-looking set and your favorite implants may not fit together at first. Empty slots are better than a confused build that overloads your plan.

For the early game, prioritize what solves your current problem. If parries are hard, keep the analyzer. If healing is tight, favor injectable support. If stamina is holding back a weapon class, build around stamina and impact instead of chasing every new part.

6. Experiment with weapons, then commit

Weapon types are not just damage numbers. Horizontal and vertical attacks behave differently, and reach, speed, impact, and part access all change how a fight feels. Try several weapon classes before upgrading one path heavily.

Once a weapon type clicks, support it with armor bonuses, stamina habits, and implants. The Surge 2 rewards commitment more than hoarding every shiny option equally.

7. Use the drone as a fight tool

Drones can interrupt, chip, pull attention, or solve specific enemy problems depending on the module. Treat the drone slot as part of your build rather than a separate gadget you forget in normal fights.

If a boss or armored enemy keeps escaping your limb plan, check whether a drone shot can break rhythm long enough for you to finish the part. Save enough battery discipline to use it when the opening matters.

8. Explore slowly and break suspicious objects

Jericho City is dense, looping, and full of shortcuts. A door that looks useless from one side may become your best runback later. Boxes and side rooms can hide items, paths, or route clues, so clear spaces carefully before sprinting to the next marker.

When you unlock a shortcut, pause and understand what it connects. That mental map matters more than rushing, because many districts twist back over themselves.

9. Watch Echoes and chase optional rewards

Echo scenes are not only story flavor. Waiting through them can reveal a reward chest, and early weapons or tools from optional routes can smooth the next few areas.

The same idea applies to revenge enemies and asynchronous bonuses. They can be dangerous, but they often pay out valuable materials. Fight them when you have room, healing, and a clean read on the nearby enemies.

10. Keep DLC gear separate in your planning

The Surge 2 has a Season Pass, The Kraken Expansion, and several gear or weapon packs. Some items, armor sets, weapons, and side content depend on ownership or expansion access.

For a first run, build around what your game is actually giving you. If an item recommendation sounds impossible to find, it may belong to an add-on, later route, boss condition, or a specific pack.

Combat Tips

  1. Lock on, pick a limb, and change targets only when your goal changes.
  2. Use normal blocking while learning, then practice directional parries against slower enemies.
  3. Mix horizontal and vertical attacks to reach the part you selected.
  4. Stop attacking when stamina is gone; a final greedy swing can erase a good fight.
  5. Save dodges for unblockable attacks, spacing fixes, and enemy groups.
  6. Build batteries before hard encounters instead of entering empty.
  7. Use drones to interrupt dangerous openings or help break specific parts.
  8. Back off and reset when the camera, lock-on, or enemy crowd makes limb control unreliable.

Supplies and Scrap

  1. Tech Scrap: Bank it at Medical Bays before pushing into an unknown district.
  2. Batteries: Spend them on finishers, healing, and drone pressure instead of letting them sit unused.
  3. Injectables: Charge them before boss attempts and long routes.
  4. Core power: Equip armor and implants that support one plan, not every plan.
  5. Crafting parts: Cut armored limbs when you need schematics or upgrade materials.
  6. Shortcuts: Open them immediately; they reduce future risk.
  7. DLC items: Treat pack and expansion rewards as optional until your own install confirms them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not attack random limbs - Pick weak parts for quick kills and armored parts for gear.
  2. Do not dodge every attack by habit - Directional blocking is one of the game’s strongest defensive skills.
  3. Do not enter boss fights with empty injectables - Build charge before the attempt when possible.
  4. Do not carry a huge scrap pile into a blind route - Bank it before curiosity becomes expensive.
  5. Do not equip armor and implants without checking core power - A focused build beats a cluttered one.
  6. Do not ignore horizontal and vertical attack differences - The right swing path helps reach the chosen limb.
  7. Do not sprint past shortcuts, boxes, and side rooms - Exploration often pays in safer routes and better tools.
  8. Do not assume every listed item is in the base game - Some rewards are tied to DLC, packs, bosses, or later areas.
