Thief II: The Metal Age is a first-person stealth game by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. The current Steam package lists Looking Glass Studios as developer and Eidos Interactive Corp. as publisher. This guide focuses on beginner-safe fundamentals: light, sound, objectives, loot, tools, patrols, saving, and quiet planning.
Content warning: ESRB rates Thief II: The Metal Age M for Mature 17+ with Animated Blood and Animated Violence. This guide discusses theft, knockouts, guards, and combat tools in non-graphic gameplay terms.
This is not a full walkthrough, all-loot route, Expert objective table, ghost-run route, modern patch guide, or current-platform setup guide.
Essential Tips
1. Start on Normal if You Are New
The manual recommends Normal for the first three missions for new players.
Normal gives you room to learn light, sound, patrols, and objectives before Hard or Expert adds more pressure. You can still play carefully on Normal; the point is to learn the stealth language before stacking extra requirements on top of it.
2. Read the Objective Screen Before Moving
Difficulty changes what the mission asks from you.
Objectives can include loot requirements, specific treasures, special tasks, and restrictions such as avoiding human kills. Check the objective screen at the start, then check it again before leaving. Do not assume a route is complete just because you reached the obvious exit.
3. Treat the Light Gem as Your Main Instrument
Your eyes can lie; the visibility gem is the clearer read.
Light level, crouching, movement, weapon state, and wall proximity all affect how visible Garrett is. A dark gem means you can often wait very close to an unaware guard; a bright gem means even a short crossing can become risky.
4. Move Slower Than You Think
Running is for escape, not normal travel.
Walk, creep, crouch, and stop often. Keep weapons put away unless you are about to use them. Movement makes you easier to see, and faster movement makes more noise, especially on hard flooring.
5. Listen Before Every New Room
Guards often reveal themselves before you see them.
Stop in shadow before opening a door or entering a hallway. Listen for footsteps, voices, humming, or other patrol noise. Leaning at doors can give you a safer read before you step into a lit or noisy space.
6. Respect Floor Materials
Metal and tile are dangerous; carpet and grass are forgiving.
If a route forces you across loud flooring, slow down or use a moss arrow when the objective is worth the cost. Do not waste moss on quiet surfaces just because you are nervous.
7. Use Water Arrows to Make Routes, Not Just Hiding Spots
Torches and gas lamps can become darkness.
Water arrows create safer crossings by extinguishing many flame-based lights. They do not solve every light source, especially electric lights, so look for switches, alternate routes, or timing when water will not help.
8. Make the Blackjack a Controlled Tool
It works best on unaware targets and has real limits.
The blackjack is quiet and non-lethal, but it is not a panic button. It can fail on enemies who see you, alerted armed enemies, and some protected heads. Approach from behind, aim high, and have a shadow nearby for the body.
9. Hide Evidence After Every Intervention
A clean hallway keeps the mission calm.
An unconscious body in a patrol path can raise alarms. Close doors behind you, move bodies into shadow, and remember that obviously missing valuables can matter. The safest room is one that still looks normal after you leave.
10. Spend Mission Tools With Purpose
Items do not carry forward to the next mission.
Loot funds future loadouts, but mission tools are for the mission you are in. Use water, moss, rope, noisemakers, flash bombs, and potions when they solve a real problem. Hoarding every tool can be just as wasteful as firing them randomly.
11. Save Before Experiments
The game supports Save/Load and Quick Save/Quick Load.
Save before testing a bright crossing, a blackjack setup, a noisy lockpick, or a tool-heavy route. Once you learn the safer approach, make a cleaner save from a shadowed position so you are not trapped in a bad alert state.
12. Learn Patrols Before Forcing Openings
Most guards have patterns you can use.
Watch one full loop from darkness before committing. Look for the moment a guard turns away, the dark patch between lamps, the carpet strip beside a tile floor, or the door that lets you bypass the patrol entirely.
13. Treat Ghosting as a Mindset First
Formal ghosting is stricter than beginner stealth.
Try to leave as little trace as possible: no alerts when you can avoid them, no bodies in patrol paths, closed doors, and no unnecessary tool noise. While learning, it is fine to use the blackjack, tools, and saves. Build toward ghost-style play after you understand the mission’s routes.
Beginner Mission Routine
| Step | Action | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Briefing | Read objectives and difficulty restrictions | Prevents accidental mission failure |
| Loadout | Buy tools for the mission in front of you | Purchased items do not carry forward |
| First shadow | Watch the nearest patrol before moving | Reveals timing and safe corners |
| Map check | Use map, compass, and notes | Keeps non-linear levels manageable |
| Light plan | Mark torches, gas lamps, switches, and dark pockets | Shows where water arrows matter |
| Sound plan | Identify metal, tile, carpet, grass, and water | Prevents surprise noise |
| Tool test | Save before costly or risky tool use | Lets you learn without losing progress |
| Objective check | Reopen objectives before leaving | Confirms loot/tasks/restrictions are done |
Tool Priorities
| Tool | Beginner Use | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | Quiet non-lethal knockouts from behind | Alerted enemies and protected heads can defeat it |
| Water Arrow | Douse torches/gas lamps and create darkness | Electric lights are usually not solved by water |
| Moss Arrow | Cross loud floors quietly | Save it for metal, tile, or forced noisy approaches |
| Rope Arrow | Reach climbable wooden or earthen surfaces | It needs a valid surface and a planned exit |
| Vine Arrow | Reach some metal-grate routes | Availability and route use vary by mission |
| Noisemaker Arrow | Pull guards away from a doorway or route | The noise can make guards suspicious |
| Flash Bomb | Escape or reset a bad close encounter | Looking at the blast can affect you too |
| Scouting Orb | Check an area without exposing Garrett | You need to retrieve it unless you have extras |
| Map and Compass | Plan routes and recover when lost | The map is a guide, not a full loot checklist |
| Save/Quick Save | Test risky crossings or setups | Do not overwrite your only clean save during an alert |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not sprint through lit halls - speed makes you easier to see and hear.
-
Do not walk over metal or tile like carpet - loud surfaces can expose a route before a guard sees you.
-
Do not draw weapons while scouting - readied weapons can increase visibility or alarm people.
-
Do not blackjack a guard who is already facing you - the tool is strongest from behind on unaware targets.
-
Do not leave bodies in patrol paths - hide unconscious enemies before another guard finds them.
-
Do not waste water arrows on electric lights - use water on torches and gas lamps, then find another answer for electric light.
-
Do not ignore the loadout screen - tools bought for this mission do not carry forward, so buy and use with the current objective in mind.
-
Do not chase loot before you know the exit route - a full purse does not help if the patrol pattern collapses around you.
-
Do not skip readables automatically - books, scrolls, and notes can point to objectives or safer routes.
-
Do not overwrite your only quiet save after an alert - keep a clean shadow save before risky sections.
