Touhou Eiyashou: Imperishable Night Tips

Beginner-friendly Touhou Eiyashou: Imperishable Night tips for teams, bombs, focus movement, time orbs, Last Spells, and survival.

On this page

Touhou Eiyashou: Imperishable Night is a fast vertical danmaku shooter where survival and clock control are tied together. You are not just clearing waves and bosses; you are trying to solve the moon incident before dawn. That makes the game more forgiving in some ways than it first appears, but it also punishes sloppy deaths, unused bombs, and careless time management.

This guide is for early clears, normal play improvement, and learning the game’s unique systems without turning every stage into a score route. Expect dense bullet patterns, fantasy combat, and a lot of practice.

Essential Tips

1. Start With a Team, Not a Solo Character

The normal structure is built around four human-and-youkai pairs: Reimu with Yukari, Marisa with Alice, Sakuya with Remilia, and Youmu with Yuyuko. The human half fires while unfocused, and the youkai half takes over while focused. That switch changes your shot behavior and slows movement, so each team is really two playstyles in one.

For a first clear, choose the team whose movement and shot coverage feel readable. Reimu/Yukari is often comfortable because wide coverage reduces aiming stress, while Marisa/Alice rewards stronger direct positioning. Do not worry about perfect scoring yet. Pick a team you can keep alive.

2. Use Focus as a Dodge Tool

Focus is not only an attack swap. It slows your movement and displays the small true hitbox, which is far smaller than the character sprite. When bullets are packed tightly, focus lets you move with the tiny corrections that Touhou demands.

Use unfocused movement to reposition across the screen, then hold focus when the pattern closes in. New players often oversteer because they react to the whole sprite. Train your eyes on the hitbox dot and make short taps instead of long panic movements.

3. Keep the Human and Youkai Gauge Near an Extreme

Imperishable Night rewards commitment. The human/youkai gauge shifts based on how you play, and time orb behavior improves when you lean strongly toward one side. During stage waves, human-side play is often practical because hitting enemies can help time collection. During boss patterns, youkai-side grazing can matter more.

The main beginner rule is simple: avoid sitting in the middle of the gauge for long. If you are clearing enemies, stay mostly unfocused and keep shooting. If you are dodging a boss spell, focus, read the pattern, and graze only when it is controlled enough to do safely.

4. Treat Time Orbs as Survival Progress

The clock starts late at night and bad endings become a risk if too much time passes. Meeting stage time quotas can reduce how much the clock advances after a stage, giving the run more room to recover from mistakes.

That does not mean you should chase every orb through danger. Think of time orbs as a reward for clean play: killing enemies on rhythm, keeping the gauge useful, collecting items safely, and avoiding deaths. A lost life costs far more momentum than a small orb cluster is worth.

5. Bomb Before the Hit

Bombs clear bullets, damage enemies, gather items, and give temporary invulnerability. They are there to turn a doomed pattern into a live run. If you see a wall forming and your route is gone, bomb immediately.

Imperishable Night also has player Last Spells that can rescue you shortly after being hit, but they cost more bomb stock when available and still carry time penalties. Use them as a backup, not as your default plan. A deliberate bomb is cleaner than a late save.

6. Learn Boss Patterns One Layer at a Time

Boss attacks look overwhelming when you try to solve the whole screen. Break each pattern into layers: aimed shots, fixed lanes, slow walls, fast cuts, and safe drift direction. Most early improvement comes from recognizing which bullets actually threaten the hitbox.

When a pattern starts, stop moving more than necessary. Watch the first wave, choose a lane, and make small corrections. If the lane collapses, bomb. Capturing a spell card is satisfying, but a survival clear is built by refusing to gamble lives on patterns you have not learned yet.

7. Use Item Collection Deliberately

The point of collection can pull items in when you move high enough, and this game has focus-related collection behavior that can help before max power. Still, the top of the screen is dangerous if enemies or bosses are about to enter.

Move upward only after a wave is stable or the screen has cleared. If a boss is arriving, drift to a side before collecting rather than sitting in the center lane. Clean item grabs help score, power, and time, but reckless collection is one of the fastest ways to lose a strong run.

8. Understand Boss Last Spells

Boss Last Spells are bonus attacks, not normal survival walls. When you qualify for them, you cannot bomb through them, and getting hit fails the bonus attempt rather than costing a usual life. They are worth learning, but they should not change your first-clear priorities.

If a Last Spell appears, treat it as practice under pressure. Stay calm, read the pattern, and accept that failing the bonus is better than ruining the rest of the run. Later, once you are clearing consistently, these attacks become a good place to refine movement and score.

9. Practice the Problem Stage Directly

Imperishable Night includes practice tools once you have reached or cleared content. Use them. A full run teaches endurance, but repeated stage practice teaches the exact enemy timing that keeps killing you.

If Stage 4 or a final route keeps breaking your run, isolate that section until the opening waves, boss entrance, and first dangerous spell feel familiar. Then return to full runs. Bullet hell progress is usually built in small repetitions, not heroic one-credit attempts from the title screen every time.

10. Respect the Final Route Split

This game has route and ending structure around Final A, Final B, and Extra Stage access. For early play, do not build assumptions from another player’s clear unless you know their team, continue use, ending state, and route conditions.

Your first job is to get stable clears with fewer deaths and better clock control. Once you can reach the end consistently, then start caring about which final path you are on and what unlocks you still need.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not ignore your bomb stock - unused bombs do nothing after a life is gone.

  2. Do not dodge by watching the whole sprite - focus on the hitbox and make smaller movements.

  3. Do not sit in the middle of the gauge - commit to human or youkai play when the situation allows it.

  4. Do not chase time orbs through danger - clean survival creates better long-term clock control.

  5. Do not auto-collect from the center during boss entrances - move to a safer side before rising.

  6. Do not treat Last Spells like required wins - learn them gradually and keep the run alive.

  7. Do not switch teams every failed run - practice one team’s speed, shot shape, and bomb rhythm.

  8. Do not overgraze early patterns - scoring tricks can wait until basic survival is consistent.

  9. Do not rely on late Last Spell saves - bomb before the hit when a pattern has already beaten you.

  10. Do not copy final-route advice blindly - team, continue use, and ending progress can change what you see.
