Touhou Koumakyou ~ The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Beginner Tips

Beginner tips for Touhou Koumakyou, covering Reimu, Marisa, focus movement, bombs, power, item collection, Spell Cards, and Extra Stage prep.

Touhou Koumakyou ~ The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the original Windows PC bullet-hell shooter developed and published by Team Shanghai Alice. This guide is for the original release, not New Classic, fan translation patches, compatibility tools, or later Touhou games.

The guide is beginner-aligned, but the game itself is still a demanding danmaku shooter. Your goal at first is not a perfect score or a stylish no-bomb clear. It is to survive longer, learn what the screen is asking from you, and build habits that make a full clear possible.

Essential Tips

  1. Pick the character who gives you the cleanest screen

Reimu is usually the friendlier first choice because her wider coverage lets you keep damaging enemies while you concentrate on dodging. Marisa hits harder and moves faster, but her narrower attack spread asks for more deliberate positioning. If you are new, choose comfort before damage.

Do a few short runs with each shot type, then commit for practice. Constantly switching characters can hide your real progress because every shot changes your spacing, boss damage, and bomb feel. A familiar weak plan is better than a strong plan you cannot execute.

  1. Use focus movement as your default in dense patterns

Hold focus when bullets start clustering around your character. Focus movement slows you down and tightens your shot, which makes small dodges easier and helps keep damage on bosses. You can release focus when moving across open space, chasing items, or repositioning between waves.

The original game does not give the same modern hitbox readability later Touhou players may expect. Treat the center of your character as the important point, move in short taps, and avoid dramatic swerves unless a pattern clearly demands it.

  1. Bomb early enough to matter

Bombs are not shame buttons. They clear bullets, damage enemies, collect items, and give you a short window of safety. If your eyes lose the route through a pattern, bomb before the hit happens. A saved life is worth more than keeping a bomb you never use.

The game has a tight counter-bomb window after a hit, but beginners should not build around it. Pressing bomb after impact is a last-second rescue, not a reliable plan. The better habit is recognizing danger half a second earlier and using the bomb on purpose.

  1. Prioritize power before greedy scoring

Early power items make the rest of the run easier. Your shot strengthens at several thresholds and reaches maximum at 128 power. Once you are at max power, item collection becomes much stronger because moving near the top of the screen pulls items toward you.

That does not mean you should fly upward through danger for every item. In the first stages, collect what you safely can, especially power. If a point item would force you through a wall of bullets, let it go and keep the run alive.

  1. Learn stage shape before boss perfection

Most beginner losses do not come from one spectacular boss attack. They come from arriving at the boss underpowered, low on bombs, or mentally rushed. Learn where enemies enter, which waves aim at you, and when the screen briefly opens enough to move upward.

Even stage 1 teaches this. Fairy waves arrive from different sides, red enemies release slow spreads, and the boss asks for both wider movement and small dodges. Treat every early pattern as route practice instead of filler.

  1. Separate survival goals from score goals

Scoring rewards point items collected high on the screen, grazing bullets, and finishing boss phases when many bullets are present. Those are useful ideas, but they can wreck a beginner run if you chase them before you can survive.

For a first clear, use scoring habits only when they support survival. Move up for items when the path is open. Graze only when the pattern is stable. Time boss damage naturally, but do not delay a kill just to chase a bigger bullet bonus.

  1. Treat Normal as the real completion target

Easy can teach controls and early stages, but it ends before the full main route. If you want the complete standard clear and Extra Stage access, practice on Normal once the basics feel familiar. Normal also teaches the pacing you need for later difficulties.

Extra Stage is a separate challenge. Do not judge your first main clear by whether you are ready for it. Unlocking it means you have learned enough to start a new layer of practice, not that you should immediately master the hardest route.

Character and Shot Choice

Reimu rewards stable positioning. Her wider attacks help clear ordinary enemies even when you are not directly under them, which gives beginners more room to watch bullets instead of constantly chasing targets. If a stage feels chaotic, Reimu can make the screen easier to manage.

Marisa rewards confidence. Her speed and power help when you know where to stand, but fast movement can also push you into bullets if you panic. If you choose Marisa, use focus movement often and resist overcorrecting. Small taps matter more than wide slides.

The best test is simple: pick a character and see whether bosses end before your concentration does. If you keep surviving but boss phases drag on, consider a stronger or more focused shot. If you keep dying while trying to line up damage, choose the wider, calmer option.

Movement, Focus, and Bombs

Watch spaces, not bullets. Beginners often stare at the nearest projectile and drift into the next one. Instead, look for the lane your character will occupy in the next second. Most patterns are designed around readable gaps, but those gaps disappear if you move too late or too far.

Use the bottom half of the screen as your default safe area, then move upward only when the wave is understood. The top of the screen is valuable for item collection at max power, but it is also where new bullets and enemies can surprise you.

Bomb when a pattern breaks your reading rhythm. A bomb used while you still have control can reset the screen, collect loose items, and protect your run. A bomb saved through repeated deaths is wasted value. If you are practicing, note which attacks force bombs and plan for them next run.

Power, Items, and Scoring Habits

Power is your first economy. A stronger shot shortens enemy waves and boss phases, which reduces the time you spend dodging. When the screen offers both power and point items, favor power until your shot is stable.

At maximum power, item collection becomes safer and more profitable because you can pull items in from high on the screen. Build a rhythm: clear the wave, check the bullet lane, move up when it is safe, then return before the next threat arrives.

Grazing is optional for beginners. It adds score when bullets pass close to your hitbox, but forcing grazes before you understand a pattern is a fast way to lose lives. Let grazes happen naturally while you dodge cleanly. Once you can clear stages consistently, you can look for deliberate graze spots.

Stages, Spell Cards, and Extra Stage

Boss fights alternate between normal attacks and named Spell Cards. A Spell Card clear without being hit or bombing gives a bonus, but the survival lesson is more important: every boss phase has a rhythm, a timer, and a point where panic makes the pattern harder than it is.

If a phase overwhelms you, stop trying to solve the whole attack at once. Learn the first safe movement, then the second. Many attacks become manageable when you reduce them to repeated small corrections rather than one frantic escape.

Continuing can help you see later stages, but it changes the run outcome and will not unlock Extra Stage. Use continues for scouting when you want information, then return to a no-continue goal when you are ready to practice the full clear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Choosing Marisa only for damage - Her power helps only if you can control her speed and narrow coverage.

  2. Releasing focus during dense bullets - Fast movement makes tiny gaps harder to hold when the screen is crowded.

  3. Saving every bomb for later - Unused bombs do nothing after a preventable death.

  4. Chasing point items through danger - A low-value item is not worth breaking a survival route.

  5. Ignoring power items early - Weak shots make later waves last longer and give bosses more time to pressure you.

  6. Trying to deathbomb every mistake - The rescue window is too tight to replace planned bomb use.

  7. Grazing before learning patterns - Score tricks should come after clean dodging, not before it.

  8. Practicing only Easy forever - Easy teaches basics, but Normal is the route that leads to the full main clear and Extra Stage unlock.
