Yakuza 0 Beginner Tips - Combat, Money, and Side Activities

Yakuza 0 beginner tips for fighting styles, money, Heat Actions, CP, Mr. Shakedown, Real Estate Royale, Cabaret Club Czar, and side activities.

On this page

Yakuza 0 by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, published by SEGA, is an action-adventure RPG where Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima fight through 1980s Tokyo and Osaka while money, Heat, business systems, and side activities constantly feed back into progression.

Content warning: Yakuza 0 includes mature violence, blood, sexual content, strong language, alcohol use, adult nightlife themes, and gambling references. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on player actions.

This guide is for a first story playthrough. It does not cover 100% completion routing, exact minigame solutions, full business optimization, achievement cleanup, or Director’s Cut Red Light Raid strategy.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Money as Progression

Cash is not just shopping money.

Yakuza 0 uses money for items, diversions, businesses, and style upgrades. Spend early money on useful abilities and recovery supplies instead of waiting for a perfect plan.

2. Learn Each Style’s Job

Every style solves a different fight problem.

Kiryu’s Brawler is a balanced force style, Rush is built around speed and footwork, and Beast leans into heavy object-based crowd control. Majima’s Thug is precise, Slugger gives him reach through bat attacks, and Breaker uses fast movement around groups.

3. Switch Styles When the Fight Changes

A crowd, a single tough enemy, and a weapon-heavy fight should not feel the same.

If a style feels wrong, change it. Use faster styles to reposition, heavier styles to punish groups or openings, and balanced styles when you need a safer default.

4. Use Heat Actions on Purpose

Heat is a damage tool, not just a meter to admire.

Build Heat through attacks, then spend it when the prompt appears and the target matters. If a fight is dragging, a well-timed Heat Action can end the problem faster than another long string of basic attacks.

5. Carry Recovery Before Story Pushes

A few healing items make long fights less punishing.

Restaurants and recovery items both matter, but story sequences can pull you into chained encounters. Before following the main objective into a major confrontation, restock enough healing to cover mistakes.

6. Use the Room

Bicycles, signs, doors, and other objects are part of the combat system.

Do not fight every street battle empty-handed. If a nearby object can interrupt a group or create a strong Heat Action setup, use it before enemies surround you.

7. Respect Mr. Shakedown

He is a wallet risk, not a normal street encounter.

If you are carrying a lot of money and are not prepared, avoid him. When you do choose to fight, bring recovery items, consider weapons, and treat the fight as a deliberate attempt rather than a random brawl.

8. Spend CP at the Shrine or Temple

Completion Points do nothing while they sit unused.

Side activities and completion goals feed CP into separate bonus lists. Check the shrine or temple regularly so movement, money, battle, or utility bonuses can start helping the current playthrough.

9. Do Side Activities Selectively

Yakuza 0 has far more side content than a first run needs.

Substories, arcade games, karaoke, fishing, Pocket Circuit, gambling games, and other minigames are useful for money, CP, practice, and variety. Do the activities that interest you, then return to the story before the side list becomes a wall.

10. Start the Business Systems When They Open

Real Estate Royale and Cabaret Club Czar are progression engines.

Kiryu’s real estate business revolves around buying, improving, collecting, and reinvesting. Majima’s cabaret club revolves around staffing, matching hostesses to clients, gaining fans, and beating rival clubs. Both are worth learning because business progress connects back into money and upgrades.

11. Use Walking and Dashing to Pick Your Fights

Movement controls how often the city interrupts you.

Dash when you want to move quickly, but slow down when you want to avoid unwanted street fights. If you are low on healing or carrying too much cash, choosing not to engage is often the right play.

12. Visit Masters as You Upgrade

Some abilities come from training, not only from buying nodes.

Each protagonist’s style progression includes master-related abilities. If a style starts feeling shallow, look for training opportunities and check adjacent upgrades before assuming the style is finished.

Combat Tips

  1. Watch health, Heat, and style together: A full Heat bar with low health calls for a different decision than a healthy character building meter safely.
  2. Quickstep before you mash: Dodging around enemies creates openings that raw attack strings will not.
  3. Use grabs against blockers: If an enemy keeps guarding, grabbing and throwing can reset the situation.
  4. Guard with weapons when needed: Weapons add range and can improve defensive options, but durability is limited.
  5. Spend Heat on priority targets: Use Heat Actions to end dangerous enemies, not only the closest one.

Resource Management

  1. Money: Buy practical upgrades, items, and business investments before spending heavily on distractions.
  2. CP: Spend it at the shrine or temple in lists that support how you are actually playing.
  3. Heat: Decide whether to cash it out for a Heat Action or hold it briefly for higher-pressure offense.
  4. Recovery: Carry enough healing before story fights, business rival fights, and planned Mr. Shakedown attempts.
  5. Business funds: Reinvest into properties, staffing, partnerships, and fan growth instead of treating business income as pure spare cash.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not hoard early money forever - Unbought upgrades make fights harder than they need to be.
  2. Do not stay in one style for every encounter - Crowds, bosses, and fast enemies reward different tools.
  3. Do not ignore Heat Actions - Letting Heat drain without using it wastes one of your strongest combat resources.
  4. Do not enter long story fights empty-handed - Recovery items cover mistakes during chained encounters.
  5. Do not run into Mr. Shakedown with a full wallet - Prepare first or route around him.
  6. Do not forget CP purchases - Shrine and temple bonuses help only after you buy them.
  7. Do not treat every minigame as mandatory - Side content is useful, but a first run does not need a completion checklist.
  8. Do not neglect the business tutorials - Real estate and cabaret systems become major money and upgrade paths.
