Yakuza Kiwami 2, developed by RGG Studio and published by SEGA, is an action-adventure RPG remake of Yakuza 2. This guide is for the remake, not the original PlayStation 2 game and not later Like a Dragon entries.
Content warning: Yakuza Kiwami 2 is rated Mature and includes intense violence, blood, strong language, alcohol use, partial nudity, and sexual themes. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on gameplay.
Current storefront scope matters. Steam has both a newer Yakuza Kiwami 2 app and Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Legacy); Steam says the newer app adds languages and keeps the same basic game content/specifications, but Legacy save data does not carry over.
This guide covers beginner fundamentals rather than story routes, all substories, Heat Action checklists, minigame completion, Cabaret Club planning, Clan Creator rosters, achievements, or version comparisons.
Essential Tips
1. Make Manual Saves a Habit
Do not assume the game will rescue every mistake.
On PS4, saving is handled from the pause menu, with no autosave or city save points. Current versions can differ, but the safe beginner habit is the same: save before long story pushes, boss-looking doors, major purchases, and side-mode sessions.
2. Buy Direct Stat Upgrades Early
Health, Attack, Defense, and Heat Gauge upgrades make every fight cleaner.
Kiwami 2 gives you five colored XP types, and nearly everything feeds them: fighting, eating, substories, minigames, and completion awards. Early on, direct stat increases are easier to understand than niche skills and immediately improve survival, damage, and Heat access.
3. Spend Heat Instead of Hoarding It
Heat Actions are a core damage tool, not a last-resort flourish.
Kiryu builds Heat by landing hits and loses it when he gets hit. Once the Heat Gauge crosses its first marker, look for Heat Action opportunities near walls, objects, weapons, or vulnerable enemies. If you sit on Heat forever, you are ignoring one of Kiwami 2’s main ways to shorten fights.
4. Use Charge Attacks to Break Momentum
A charged hit can stun an enemy or crack a guard.
The game emphasizes charge attacks. Hold and release attacks between combos, while moving, or while defending to pressure enemies who block too much. Use them as a reset button when basic strings are not opening a target.
5. Grab and Throw When Crowds Collapse on You
One thrown enemy can knock space into a group fight.
When random street enemies or scripted mobs crowd Kiryu, grab one enemy and throw him through nearby attackers. It is simple, readable crowd control, and it gives you enough room to reposition, pick up a weapon, or start a Heat setup.
6. Treat Weapons as Situational Tools
Bosses and high-health enemies are easier when the room helps.
Kiwami 2 supports stored weapons and environmental weapons. Large objects, signs, bikes, and carried weapons can do useful damage when fists are taking too long. Keep a few options available, especially before fights where the arena looks cluttered.
7. Eat for XP, Not Just Healing
Restaurants are part of progression.
Food heals Kiryu and grants XP. Ordering the right combinations can add bonus XP, so city meals are worth taking seriously while you explore Kamurocho and Sotenbori. Vending-machine drinks can also provide combat buffs and can be stored in inventory.
8. Do Substories as You Find Them
Sidequests teach the city and usually pay you back.
Substories are mini-drama sidequests marked by word balloon icons, and completed substories usually give rewards. Buy the Substory Finder ability when you can, because it marks new substories on the map and prevents beginner wandering from turning into guesswork.
9. Keep Cabaret Club Management Non-Combat in Your Head
It is a business-management side mode, not a brawler.
Cabaret Club centers on shifts, scouting, hostess ranks, makeovers for Platinum hostesses, ranking matches, and championships. For a beginner, the right mindset is simple: build a balanced roster, match workers to customer needs, and treat championships as progression checks.
10. Play Clan Creator Like Tower Defense
Positioning matters before the first enemy wave moves.
Clan Creator starts with your defense team deployed. Before beginning a battle, look at equipment, barriers, bottlenecks, and likely enemy paths. Park sturdy defenders near vulnerable points, keep mobile attackers ready to respond, and use character skills when waves cluster.
11. Sample Minigames Without Chasing 100%
Kiwami 2 has a lot to do, but completion routing is its own project.
Side activities include karaoke, batting cages, blackjack, darts, golf, mahjong, gambling, UFO Catcher, Toylets, Cabaret Club, and more. Try activities as breaks from story and combat, but save strict score targets, cheat-item routing, and Haruka request planning for a completion guide.
12. Separate Kiwami 2 Advice From Other Games
Yakuza 2, Yakuza 6, and newer Like a Dragon games do not all share systems.
Kiwami 2 is a remake with Dragon Engine combat, one Kiryu fighting style, Heat Actions, charge attacks, and side modes added or reworked for this version. If advice talks about PS2-only systems, another protagonist, or a different era of the series, check it before applying it.
Combat Tips
- Watch the Heat Gauge: Use Heat Actions once available instead of waiting for perfect moments.
- Charge between actions: A charged attack can help against guards or stubborn single targets.
- Throw into crowds: Grabs are especially useful when enemies surround Kiryu.
- Use objects first: Environmental weapons can save healing items in high-health fights.
- Respect random encounters: Street groups can often be avoided before they start combat.
- Use Extreme Heat deliberately: After it unlocks, save it for durable targets, crowded rooms, or moments where you need quick pressure.

| Direct stat page | Raises Health, Attack, Defense, and Heat Gauge | Prioritize simple stat gains early |

| Cabaret ranks | Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum hostesses differ in strength | Put your best roster into championship pushes |
| Clan pre-positioning | Lets you place defenders before a wave starts | Read the map before pressing start |
| Steam current vs Legacy | New app keeps basic content/specs but does not import Legacy saves | Check your version before moving save files |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not ignore manual saves - Losing progress before a big fight is avoidable.
- Do not spend all XP on flashy skills first - Basic stats make every system easier.
- Do not hoard Heat forever - Heat Actions are one of your best damage tools.
- Do not mash into blocking enemies - Charge attacks, grabs, weapons, and Heat Actions solve different problems.
- Do not treat food as cosmetic - Meals heal Kiryu and feed the XP economy.
- Do not skip Substory Finder - It turns sidequest hunting into a map task instead of a memory test.
- Do not run Cabaret Club like a combat mode - Roster fit, shifts, and championship readiness matter more.
- Do not start Clan Creator waves without checking paths - Bad positioning creates avoidable equipment damage.
- Do not follow Yakuza 2 or Yakuza 6 advice blindly - Kiwami 2 has its own remake-specific systems.
