Assassin's Creed: Odyssey: Legacy of the First Blade Essential Tips

Essential tips for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey: Legacy of the First Blade, covering access, episodes, Order targets, ship prep, stealth, and combat.

On this page

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey: Legacy of the First Blade is the first paid story DLC package for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, published by Ubisoft. It is not standalone: you need the base game installed, then the package covers three episodes, Hunted, Shadow Heritage, and Bloodline. Keep that boundary clear, because this is separate from the base campaign and separate from The Fate of Atlantis.

This guide is for players entering the full Legacy package on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S compatibility. It stays light on story details and focuses on preparation, episode flow, Order targets, stealth, ship readiness, and combat habits.

Content warning: Legacy of the First Blade is mature-rated and includes violent combat, blood, strong language, and adult content-rating themes. This guide keeps its advice non-graphic and focused on play.

Essential Tips

1. Confirm You Own the Right Package

Legacy of the First Blade is a three-episode DLC package for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The package includes Hunted, Shadow Heritage, and Bloodline, and all three build one arc around Darius, the Hidden Blade, and the Order of the Ancients.

Before troubleshooting quest markers, check that you installed this package or its individual episode entitlements on your platform. Do not look for Atlantis portals, Elysium objectives, or Fate of Atlantis menus; those belong to a different Odyssey expansion.

2. Enter After the Naxos Requirement

The intended entry point is a main Odyssey save that has completed the Naxos questline in Episode 7 of the main story and reached level 28 or above. Episode 2 also expects Hunted to be complete, and Episode 3 expects Shadow Heritage to be complete.

That structure matters because each episode assumes the previous one introduced its characters, enemies, and Order branch. If an episode does not appear, check story progress, level, installation, and whether the earlier Legacy episode is complete before assuming the game has broken.

3. Treat the Order as a Clue Hunt

Legacy’s main recurring system is the Order of the Ancients. The three branches are Order of Hunters, Order of the Storm, and Order of Dominion. Some members appear during main quests, while others depend on clues, documents, side tasks, or exploration.

Slow down when the DLC points you toward papers, forts, camps, or people to follow. A revealed target is usually easier to handle than a half-understood one, and documents can save you from wandering the map with no clear plan.

4. Bring a Quiet Loadout

Several Order targets are easier when you avoid open conflict until the clue or target is secured. Keep stealth tools and bow options ready before entering forts or guarded quest spaces.

When a document sits in a restricted area, clear only what you need, stay out of unnecessary fights, and leave before the clue pickup turns into unnecessary open combat. Legacy rewards patience more than sprinting at every red icon.

5. Use the Bow as a Default Problem Solver

The bow is useful throughout the DLC. It lets you remove guards from hiding, soften target companions, handle dangerous animals from a safer distance, and pressure enemies who punish close-range aggression.

Do not wait until a boss-style fight to think about ranged pressure. Keep your bow ready before major quests, and use high ground or cover when a camp gives you time to plan.

6. Upgrade Your Ship Before Shadow Heritage

Shadow Heritage leans into naval action. It sends you against The Tempest, her arsenal, and her fleet, and at least one major target sequence follows ship combat. If you ignored your ship during the base game, this episode can feel sharper than the first.

Before starting the second episode, spend resources on the ship upgrades you actually use and refresh the basic naval combat habits you learned in the base game. Avoid entering story sea fights with a neglected hull.

7. Stay Mobile Against Fire Pressure

One major Storm target can punish close-range trading with fire damage. The safer habit is to keep moving, shoot when distance is available, and only commit to melee when you have a clean opening.

This does not mean you should play every fight at maximum range. It means you should notice when an enemy’s weapon or arena makes stationary brawling expensive, then shift to dodge, reposition, and ranged pressure.

8. Clear Companions Before Main Targets

Order fights often become messy because the target is not alone. The first episode includes targets with companions, camp guards, or animals nearby, and later episodes continue mixing target reveals with set-piece combat.

Scout first. Mark nearby enemies, remove isolated guards, and avoid starting the main fight in the middle of extra patrols. If animals are protecting a target, handle them from range before you close in.

9. Respect Investigation Objectives

Bloodline includes objectives built around following people, listening, gathering information, and then eliminating the revealed threat. If you rush these sections, you can miss the rhythm of the mission and create unnecessary combat.

When the game asks you to observe, follow, or eavesdrop, switch from conquest mode to investigation mode. Stay close enough to progress the objective, but far enough to avoid turning a quiet sequence into a chase.

10. Finish Each Branch Before Moving On Mentally

The DLC is easiest to track when you think in three branches: Hunters in Hunted, Storm in Shadow Heritage, and Dominion in Bloodline. Each branch has its own targets, clues, and story role.

Before you leave an episode behind, review the Order menu and clean up the targets or clues you care about. You can continue later, but returning cold to a half-solved clue chain is much harder than finishing the branch while its locations and names are fresh.

Episode Priorities

In Hunted, prioritize access, stealth, and the first Order branch. You meet Darius, learn how this DLC frames the Hidden Blade, and start dealing with Persian opponents and Order targets. Use this episode to rebuild quiet play habits if your Odyssey build has become pure open combat.

In Shadow Heritage, prioritize the ship and ranged control. The episode highlights The Tempest, naval pressure, threatened innocents, and the Greek Order’s blockade. A strong ship and a reliable bow make the shift from land clues to sea fights much smoother.

In Bloodline, prioritize information flow. The finale continues the Order conflict with Dominion targets, set-piece fights, following, eavesdropping, and target reveals. Move deliberately and let the objective type tell you whether to scout, sail, sneak, or fight.

Combat and Progression Habits

Legacy of the First Blade does not replace Odyssey’s core combat; it asks you to apply it more carefully. When documents are involved, use stealth and bow options to control your approach. Clear nearby companions and enter target fights deliberately instead of rushing into a crowded battlefield.

The DLC also changes emphasis by episode. Hunted rewards careful target work, Shadow Heritage checks whether your ship is ready, and Bloodline mixes direct fights with investigations. Keep one flexible loadout rather than assuming a single warrior build will solve every sequence cleanly.

For progression, avoid treating all three episodes as a single blur. Finish obvious Order clues, review the branch menu, and restock before the next major quest. Those small pauses prevent the most common late-DLC problem: knowing a target exists but forgetting which clue, ship fight, or village sequence was supposed to reveal them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Launching the wrong expansion - open Legacy of the First Blade content instead of looking for Fate of Atlantis realms.

  2. Starting before Naxos progress - complete the required main-story progress and reach level 28 before expecting Episode 1 to flow.

  3. Skipping episode order - finish Hunted before Shadow Heritage and Shadow Heritage before Bloodline.

  4. Ignoring clue documents - pick up documents and quest information before hunting random targets.

  5. Charging into guarded areas - scout forts and camps before turning a clue pickup into a full alarm.

  6. Neglecting the bow - keep it ready for guarded areas, dangerous animals, and mobile target fights.

  7. Leaving your ship underbuilt - upgrade it before the naval-heavy second episode.

  8. Trading hits with fire enemies - stay mobile and use ranged pressure when close combat punishes you.

  9. Fighting targets with all companions alive - remove nearby guards or animals before committing to the target.

  10. Abandoning half-solved Order branches - review each episode’s Order targets before moving on.
