1. Confirm You Are Starting Throne of Bhaal

Enhanced Edition ownership is not the same thing as ToB scope.

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition usually includes Shadows of Amn, Throne of Bhaal, and Black Pits II. Choose the Throne of Bhaal campaign when you want the post-Shadows expansion, and do not mix Black Pits II arena advice or BG3 systems into this run.

2. Treat ToB as Post-Shadows Content

It starts after Shadows of Amn, even if you launch it directly.

The expansion can be entered after finishing Shadows of Amn or by starting/importing directly into ToB. If you start the add-on story directly, the game proceeds as if Shadows of Amn were already finished and you cannot return to its areas, so make a clean save before committing.

3. Import With Intent

A prepared party makes the expansion feel less abrupt.

ToB supports imported characters or newly created high-level characters. If you import, check equipment, memorized spells, quick slots, party roles, and inventory before the first serious fight instead of assuming your Shadows of Amn setup is still organized.

4. Turn On Auto-Pause Before the Game Gets Loud

Use the manual’s Auto-Pause options to pause on events that matter to you, then get comfortable issuing orders while paused. ToB fights can stack enemy abilities, summons, protections, and status effects quickly.

5. Pick Difficulty Deliberately

Enhanced Edition storefronts call out Story Mode for relaxed exploration and Legacy of Bhaal for a punishing old-school challenge. If you are learning ToB systems for the first time, choose difficulty for learning room rather than pride.

6. Spend High-Level Abilities Like Core Resources

HLAs are not decorative level-up rewards.

Throne of Bhaal introduced High-Level Abilities, and they are central to late-saga survival. Read each HLA choice in game, match it to what your character already does, and remember that many powerful options are limited between rests.

7. Use the Pocket Plane as Your Base

It is more than story scenery.

The Pocket Plane functions as a ToB hub with storage, key NPCs, and travel/challenge structure. Use it to regroup, sort inventory, check party setup, and avoid carrying every possible item into every field area.

8. Ask Cespenar Before Selling Strange Components

ToB item upgrades can consume rare pieces.

Cespenar handles ToB-side item upgrades, and several upgrade paths can draw on the same components. Do not sell unusual high-level materials or spend them casually until you know whether they feed a weapon or armor plan you care about.

9. Respect Watcher’s Keep as Optional High-Level Content

It is ToB add-in content, not the main ToB campaign itself.

Watcher’s Keep can be reached from both the Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal maps, and progress carries over. It is also a high-level dungeon; push in, leave, and return later if the fights start asking for tools your party does not yet have.

10. Use Quick Saves and Manual Saves Separately

One panic quick save should not be your whole safety net.

The manual supports quick saving, but ToB’s campaign transitions and dungeon commitments make manual saves important too. Keep a save before entering ToB, before major hub departures, and before long dungeon pushes.

11. Identify Before Equipping

Late-game gear is powerful enough to punish laziness.

Unknown magical items can hide properties you do not want. Identify items, read descriptions, and only then decide whether they fit your party.

12. Keep Romance and Companion Callbacks Optional

They can continue from Shadows of Amn, but they are not required prep.
