Blasphemous II is a dark Metroidvania action-platformer by The Game Kitchen and published by Team17. It follows The Penitent One into another Cvstodia pilgrimage built around exploration, new weapon tools, expanded combat, bosses, prayers, rosary beads, altarpiece figures, guilt, and backtracking.
Content warning: Blasphemous II is rated M for Mature 17+ by ESRB with Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, and Violence. This guide keeps discussion non-graphic and focused on player actions.
This is a first-playthrough fundamentals guide for the base Blasphemous II experience. It is not a Blasphemous 1 guide, Wounds of Eventide recap, Mea Culpa walkthrough, Third Sin walkthrough, boss route, hidden-ending guide, collectible route, resonance chart, or optimized build guide.
Patch and DLC note: Mea Culpa, True Torment, and The Third Sin add or change major systems, so confirm your DLC and patch setup before following exact route, ending, boss, achievement, map, or build advice.
Essential Tips
1. Stop Forcing Every Locked Path
A blocked chest or gate is often a future ability check.
Blasphemous II expects you to return after finding new tools. If a route has no clear switch, bell, breakable wall, traversal answer, or weapon interaction, mark it mentally and move on. Wasting health on a route you cannot solve yet is worse than leaving a note for later.
2. Hit Suspicious Walls
Secrets can hide behind ordinary-looking dead ends.
When a wall, corner, or blocked-looking alcove feels deliberate, test it before leaving. Not every secret is obvious, and the game rewards slow room reading with shortcuts, supplies, and optional rewards.
3. Rotate Weapons Instead of Marrying One
The best weapon is the one that solves the room in front of you.
Blasphemous II’s base-game weapons cover different ranges, speeds, counters, and traversal interactions. Use reach when enemies are unsafe up close, use speed when a short opening matters, and switch again when the environment asks for a different tool.
4. Spend Upgrades on Survival and Moves
Raw damage is not the only way to make the game easier.
Health upgrades, weapon combo unlocks, rosary slots, and altarpiece slots can all change how forgiving a fight feels. If you are dying in two mistakes, invest in staying alive before chasing a more stylish offense.
5. Clean Up Guilt After Bad Deaths
Guilt can shrink your usable Fervour and weaken your options.
After a death, recover your fragment when it is reasonable. If it is parked in a dangerous room or boss path, use a confessor instead of dragging a restricted Fervour meter through several more attempts.
6. Treat Fervour as a Shared Budget
Prayers and some weapon tools compete for the same resource.
Do not spend Fervour just because the meter is full. Save it for safe spell windows, important ranged pressure, or weapon states that actually convert into damage. If your current weapon plan drinks Fervour quickly, be more selective with prayers.
7. Use the City Return Tool
Returning to the hub is part of the loop, not a failure.
When you need to upgrade, shop, clear guilt, or hand in progress, use the return spell/item instead of slogging backward through every room. Blasphemous II has plenty of backtracking already, so cut the dead travel when the game gives you a way out.
8. Check Merchants and Side Quests
Optional NPC work can become practical power.
Tears of Atonement are not just for filler purchases. Merchants and side quests can provide upgrades, items, and tools that make the next stretch smoother. If a new NPC gives you a task, treat it as a possible progression thread.
9. Change Rosary Beads for the Problem
Your defensive loadout should answer the damage you are taking.
Rosary Beads can improve attributes, add utility, or cover specific kinds of danger. If an area keeps punishing you with the same threat, check your beads before repeating the same route unchanged.
10. Use Altarpieces Broadly, Not Perfectly
Passive bonuses matter even before you know exact resonance pairs.
Altarpiece figures can improve movement, healing, damage, stun, or other habits. Resonances exist, but a first playthrough does not need a full chart. Start by equipping effects you understand, then save exact pairings for a dedicated build guide later.
11. Respect Hazards Even When They No Longer Kill Instantly
Less punishing does not mean harmless.
Compared with the first Blasphemous, falls and spikes are more forgiving, but they still cost health or reset your position. Treat hazard rooms as resource drains, not free practice spaces.
12. Separate Base Game From DLC Goals
Mea Culpa, True Torment, and The Third Sin change the checklist.
If you are following a guide, confirm whether it covers the base game, Mea Culpa, True Torment, or Third Sin. A completion route, boss list, map percentage, achievement plan, or weapon setup can be wrong if it mixes versions without saying so.
Combat and Build Habits
| Situation | Safer Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New enemy | Watch one full attack cycle before committing | Most attacks are easier after you see the tell |
| Fast enemy | Use shorter strings and keep dodge space open | Greedy hits turn safe openings into deaths |
| Large enemy | Try longer reach or stronger stagger tools | You can pressure without standing inside the hitbox |
| Fervour full | Spend it only during a real opening | Prayers and weapon states can waste the same meter |
| Low survivability | Upgrade health, beads, and defensive passives | More room for mistakes helps learning |
| Repeated boss loss | Change weapon, beads, and altarpiece figures | A different setup may fit the pattern better |
| Exploration blocker | Leave it and return with new tools | Many paths are designed for later abilities |
Exploration and Cleanup
-
Peek before committing: When a room branches, check the exits before following one path deep into the map.
-
Use markers or notes: Track gates, chests, bells, suspicious walls, and traversal blockers so cleanup does not become a memory test.
-
Return after new movement tools: A new traversal ability can turn several old dead ends into live routes.
-
Search before major transitions: If the route clearly pushes toward a boss, NPC hand-in, or new region, check nearby side rooms first.
-
Do not chase 100% blind: Completion, endings, collectibles, and DLC map percentage need a current route guide.
-
Keep hub errands together: Shop, upgrade, hand in quest items, check rosary slots, adjust altarpieces, and clear guilt in one trip when possible.
-
Expect patch-sensitive cleanup: The Third Sin changed map percentage, achievements, Marks of Martyrdom, and Ascended-playthrough issues, so confirm your patch before final completion work.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not force unreachable gates for ten minutes - Come back when a new weapon or ability gives you a real answer.
-
Do not ignore suspicious walls - Breakable paths can hide useful shortcuts or rewards.
-
Do not use one weapon for every enemy - Range, speed, counterplay, and traversal needs change by room.
-
Do not leave guilt unattended after repeated deaths - Restricted Fervour makes hard fights harder.
-
Do not spend Fervour without a target window - A missed prayer or wasted weapon state can cost the attempt.
-
Do not forget merchant and quest rewards - Optional errands can become meaningful upgrades.
-
Do not leave rosary beads unchanged - Swap them when the damage pattern changes.
-
Do not chase resonance charts mid-fight - Use clear passive bonuses first, then refine exact builds later.
-
Do not treat spikes and pits as free mistakes - They still drain health and momentum.
-
Do not mix base-game and DLC checklists - Confirm which version a guide covers before following route or completion advice.
