Bloons TD 6 Beginner Tips - Towers, Heroes, Maps, and Updates

Bloons TD 6 beginner tips for first clears, tower upgrades, Heroes, maps, cash, XP, Monkey Knowledge, co-op, events, and patch-sensitive play.

On this page

Bloons TD 6, developed and published by Ninja Kiwi, is a tower defense strategy game about placing Monkey Towers and Heroes, upgrading defenses, and stopping waves of Bloons before they reach the exit.

This guide is for early map clears and progression habits. It is not a CHIMPS route, boss-event plan, hero tier list, Paragon guide, or current meta build.

Patch note: Bloons TD 6 is actively updated. Tower balance, hero availability, events, paid expansions, and platform versions can differ by storefront, so refresh exact advice after major updates and before spending limited resources.

Essential Tips

1. Learn on Simple Maps First

A clean lane teaches more than a hard map full of surprises.

Start with easier map layouts and standard difficulty options so you can see how towers, upgrades, Heroes, and Bloon properties interact. Advanced maps, events, custom challenges, and boss rules are better after the basic defense loop is readable.

2. Build Around the Next Leak

Upgrade for the problem in front of you, not for a perfect late-game plan.

Watch what gets through your defense. If Bloons are leaking early, you may need more reliable popping power or better placement. If a property is causing trouble, add a tower or upgrade that can handle that kind of threat instead of buying random damage everywhere.

3. Place Your Hero With Intention

Heroes level over rounds, so late placement wastes growth.

A Hero is different from a normal tower: you equip one, place it in a map, and let it gain Hero XP as rounds pass. Put your Hero where it can contribute for a long stretch, and remember that co-op changes Hero use because each player can bring one.

4. Use Towers You Want to Unlock

Tower XP comes from actually using tower types.

If you want more upgrades on a tower, include that tower type in your real games. Do not rely on one favorite tower forever, because progression is easier when several tower families have useful upgrades unlocked.

5. Respect Map Shape and Obstacles

Placement is a mechanic, not decoration.

Some maps bend lanes, split routes, block line of sight, limit water or land placement, or include removable objects. Before spending cash, check whether the tower can actually cover the path you need and whether the map is hiding a better placement option.

6. Spend Cash in Stages

A few focused upgrades usually beat a scattered board.

Cash buys towers and upgrades during the match. Add coverage when you need a new role, but do not fill the whole map with low-impact towers if upgrading an existing defense would solve the current waves.

7. Treat Powers and Insta Monkeys as Tools

They are useful, but they can hide weak fundamentals.

Powers and Insta Monkeys can help with tricky maps and modes where they are allowed. Use them when you want help, but also practice normal clears so you understand why a setup worked.

8. Use Monkey Knowledge as Long-Term Progression

Permanent upgrades help, but they should not be your whole plan.

Monkey Knowledge can add power over time. Spend points toward the parts of the game you play most, then keep learning base tower roles so you are not lost in modes or challenges that restrict extra help.

9. Check Event Rules Before Playing

Events are not just normal maps with bigger rewards.

Odysseys, Races, Boss Events, Contested Territory, Monkey Teams, Daily Challenges, and custom browser content can add restrictions or special goals. Read the current rules in-game before committing resources.

10. Recheck Advice After Updates

A good 2026 habit is to distrust old exact builds.

Version 55.x already includes fixes and balance changes, and future updates are flagged as changeable. Use evergreen principles for first clears, then compare any tower, hero, boss, or event recommendation against the current patch.

Combat Habits

  1. Watch the first leaks: They tell you whether the issue is placement, damage type, coverage, or a missing role.
  2. Upgrade before panic-buying: If a tower already covers the path well, an upgrade may solve more than another basic tower.
  3. Cover more than the entrance: Long sight lines, bends, and overlapping paths often matter more than placing everything at the start.
  4. Add roles gradually: Mix damage, control, support, and property coverage as the map asks for them.
  5. Pause before events and custom rules: Check restrictions before assuming your normal tower choices are allowed.
  6. Use co-op communication: In co-op, coordinate tower roles and cash requests instead of duplicating the same weak coverage.

Progression and Resources

  1. Cash: Spend it on towers and upgrades that answer the current map.
  2. Tower XP: Use tower types in games to unlock more upgrade options.
  3. Hero XP: Place Heroes early enough to level naturally through rounds.
  4. Monkey Money: Save it for Heroes, skins, Knowledge, continues, powers, or event entries you actually use.
  5. Monkey Knowledge: Build it around your preferred playstyle, while remembering some rulesets may limit extra help.
  6. Trophies and cosmetics: Treat event rewards as long-term bonuses, not requirements for early clears.
  7. Real-money purchases: Storefronts list in-game purchases, so check what is optional and what is platform-specific before buying.

Hidden Mechanics

Line of sightSome map objects block tower coverageCheck tower range and blocked lanes before upgrading
Removable obstaclesSome maps let you spend cash to open space or sight linesRemove objects only when the new coverage matters
Hero levelingHeroes grow through rounds instead of normal upgrade pathsPlace a Hero early enough to contribute and level
Tower XPUpgrade unlocks depend on using tower typesRotate in towers you want to progress
FreeplayPost-clear play can change progression efficiencyUse it for fun and testing, not as your only unlock plan
Event rulesWeekly and custom modes can restrict towers or change goalsRead rules before choosing a strategy

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not place towers where obstacles block their useful coverage - a strong tower still fails if it cannot see the lane.

  2. Do not buy every cheap tower instead of upgrading a working defense - scattered low-level towers can leave the main leak unsolved.

  3. Do not ignore Bloon properties when leaks start - add coverage for the property that is actually getting through.

  4. Do not place your Hero so late that it cannot level naturally - late Hero placement gives up part of the Hero system.

  5. Do not use only one tower type while trying to unlock broad upgrades - tower progression improves when you actually use different tower families.

  6. Do not enter events without reading the rules - rotating restrictions can incheck a normal setup.

  7. Do not spend every bit of Monkey Money as soon as you earn it - saving gives you room for the Hero, Knowledge, power, continue, or event entry you actually want.

  8. Do not use Powers or Insta Monkeys on every easy leak - practice normal defenses so you still understand why a setup works.
