Counter-Strike 2 Tips: Beginner Guide to Economy, Aim, and Utility

Stop before you shoot, aim at head height, and buy with your team. Counter-Strike 2 beginner tips on economy, bomb timers, sound, utility, and Premier.

Counter-Strike 2 is Valve’s free-to-play tactical shooter, developed and published by Valve as the Source 2 successor to CS:GO. Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists play objective rounds with no respawns, and the money you earn decides what you can buy next round. The rules are quick to learn, but most early losses come from habits: shooting on the move, buying alone, and dying for nothing.

Content warning: Valve describes Counter-Strike 2 as including intense violence and blood. The game also has in-game chat with other players and in-game purchases, including randomized items, and Germany’s USK rates it 16. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on player decisions.

Quick answer: Four habits fix most beginner problems in Counter-Strike 2. Come to a full stop before you fire by tapping the opposite movement key (counter-strafing), and keep your crosshair at head height while you move. Buy with your team: Competitive and Premier start everyone at $800, and the loss bonus climbs from $1,400 to $3,400 per player. Treat every death as final until the next round, and practice recoil and a couple of smokes per map in a Practice server before you queue ranked.

The game is free to play, but Premier needs Prime Status and profile rank 10. Prime is a paid Steam upgrade that matches you with other Prime players. Your CS Rating appears after 10 Premier wins. Competitive gives you a separate skill group on each map once you win 2 matches there.

Premier maps are now picked rather than banned: one team picks a map, the other picks two, the first picks a final map, and the game randomly chooses one of the four. In Premier Season Five the Active Duty pool is Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage, and Nuke, with Cache replacing Overpass.

Before your first match:

  • Crosshair: The default is now Dynamic Quad, which spreads to show your weapon’s real spread and inaccuracy, so it teaches you when shots will land. Custom styles live in the Crosshair/Scopes tab of Settings; sizes are in pixels and rescale automatically if you change resolution.
  • Practice server: Go to Play > Practice > Competitive, pick a map, and turn on Infinite Ammo, Infinite Warmup, and Grenade Camera for an empty server where you can drill recoil, crosshair placement, and smokes.

Essential Tips

1. Stop Before You Shoot

Your gun is inaccurate while you move, and releasing a key doesn’t stop you instantly. Use counter-strafing: if you are peeking with D, let go of D, tap A once, then shoot. Avoid peeking diagonally, since stopping cleanly would mean countering two keys. Do it with your own fingers, because keyboard features that automate counter-strafing are detected on Valve’s official servers and get you kicked.

2. Keep Your Crosshair at Head Height

As you move, keep your crosshair where an enemy’s head will appear and pre-aim corners instead of letting it drift toward the floor. When a fight starts, counter-strafe and take your first shot standing, not crouched.

3. Learn Recoil on a Few Guns

Recoil patterns are not random, so they can be learned. For mostly vertical recoil, pull your mouse down as you spray. Stick with a small set for a while, such as the AK-47 (Terrorist), M4A1-S (Counter-Terrorist), Desert Eagle, Tec-9 (Terrorist), and P90, and practice each against a wall in a Practice server.

4. Treat Every Death as Final

There are no respawns or revives in a round, so ask what your death would cost before you peek. Taking on three attackers alone on a full-buy round is usually worse than falling back to hold the site with your team. On defense, even a one-for-one trade tends to favor the attackers, because CTs have to spread out to cover both sites.

5. Play for Rounds, Not Your K/D

The first team to 13 rounds wins, and that is the number that matters. The player who enters a site first rarely has great stats but can be worth far more than a player farming late kills, and good smokes and molotovs barely show on the scoreboard. If you have a solid crossfire after the plant, don’t break it to chase a kill.

6. Use Cover and Peek Small

Getting shot slows your movement, so standing in the open makes you an easy kill. Swing just far enough past a corner to check it, then get back to cover. A quick jiggle peek (tap out, tap back) can bait a shot or reveal a position. Save wide swings for when you know where the enemy is and a teammate is ready to trade.

7. Talk, Ping, and Read the Radar

Call enemy positions, weapons, and key sounds, and keep it short. Use the location name under your minimap so callouts match the map, and use the player ping (the mouse wheel by default) as a marker. Zoom the radar out, because the default is too close, and every enemy your team spots and the bomb show up on it.

8. Carry the Bomb Carefully

A random Terrorist gets the C4 each round. If it’s you, don’t lead into a site with no backup or die somewhere your team can’t reach. Drop it somewhere safe and close, or pass it to a teammate before a risky push, and plant as soon as the site is safe. The bomb also drops on its own if you stay idle too long.

9. Vary Your Plays and Warm Up

If you hold the same off-angle or throw the same flash from the same spot every round, opponents will start pre-firing or nading it, so vary your positions and timing. Before ranked, play a Deathmatch or two to warm up your aim.

Economy and Buying

Money is per player. In Competitive and Premier you start with $800 and can hold up to $16,000.

Round result (Competitive/Premier)Money per player
Win by eliminating the enemy team, or by time as CT$3,250
Win by bomb detonation or defuse$3,500
Loss$1,400, then $1,900, $2,400, $2,900, up to $3,400
You plant or defuse the bomb+$300 to you

The loss bonus runs on a counter that goes up one step per loss and down one step per win, and each half starts one step up. The team that loses the pistol round gets $1,900, and a single win doesn’t wipe out the safety net. Terrorists still earn extra on a lost round if they planted. Surviving Terrorists get no round-end money when a round is lost on time, so hiding with a gun until the clock runs out costs you that income.

Kill rewards depend on the weapon, which makes SMGs and shotguns popular money-makers. Most pistols and rifles pay $300, SMGs $600 (P90 $300), shotguns $900 (XM1014 $600), the AWP only $100, and the knife $1,500.

Teams talk about four kinds of buy:

  • Full buy: Rifles or an AWP, armor with helmet, grenades, and defuse kits on CT.
  • Eco: Spend little or nothing so the team can afford a stronger buy next round.
  • Half buy: An upgraded pistol, light armor, or a few grenades, while keeping enough for next round.
  • Force buy: Spend almost everything without enough for a full buy. It can surprise the enemy, but losing it usually breaks your economy.

Check your team before you spend. Teammates’ weapons appear at the top of the screen, and indicators in the buy menu show their gear. If you bought on an eco by mistake, refund it from the buy menu (this works for unused purchases, not dropped or picked-up weapons). With spare cash, buy a rifle and drop it for a teammate. Killing a teammate costs you $300.

Common prices at the time of writing (check the buy menu after updates):

ItemPrice
Kevlar Vest / Kevlar + Helmet$650 / $1,000
Defuse Kit (CT)$400
Flashbang$200
Smoke Grenade / HE Grenade$300 each
Molotov (T) / Incendiary Grenade (CT)$400 / $500
AK-47 (T)$2,700
AWP$4,750

Your loadout decides which weapons appear in the buy menu (1 starting pistol, 4 pistols, 5 mid-tier weapons, and 5 rifles), so set it up before your first match.

Bomb and Defuse Rules

Rule (Competitive/Premier)Value
Round time1:55
Planting3.2 seconds
Bomb timer after plant40 seconds (the round timer stops)
Defuse without kit / with kit10 seconds / 5 seconds
  • Listen to the plant. Every player hears when a plant starts, and a bomb on B beeps at a lower pitch than one on A, which tells you where to rotate.
  • Defusing is a commitment. You must keep looking at the bomb and holding the use key, and you can’t shoot. Defusing lowers your weapon and blocks scoping, and there is a short delay before you can fire after you stop. Clear the site or get cover first.
  • Buy kits. On buy rounds, make sure some CTs have a $400 kit, because it halves the defuse. Casual gives every CT one free, and you can pick up a dead teammate’s kit.
  • Respect the blast. The explosion is now a shockwave that flows out from the bombsite, fades around corners, and doesn’t go through walls. Once the bomb becomes audible, your health bar flashes a preview of the damage you would take, so if you’re saving, put solid walls between you and the site.

Movement, Sound, and Stealth

Sound is critical information in Counter-Strike 2. Running and jumping are the loudest things you can do, while walking and standing still make no footsteps. Wear headphones.

  • Walk (Shift) keeps your footsteps silent. Crouch-walking is silent too, but slower. Hold walk on ladders to climb quietly.
  • Landing makes noise, so take lower drops when you’re sneaking.
  • Silent reload: Holding the reload key now reloads silently, but it takes quite a bit longer. Unscoping a sniper rifle no longer makes a sound.
  • Jump-throws are audible: Nearby players hear the grunt.
  • Accuracy penalties: Jumping greatly increases inaccuracy, and ladders give a severe penalty. Crouching improves accuracy but makes peeks slow and predictable.
  • Rotate with your knife out: The knife and the C4 give the top movement speed, while heavy weapons like the AWP slow you down.

Utility and Smokes

Smokes in Counter-Strike 2 are volumetric clouds that react to their surroundings. Bullets punch small holes that help locate players inside, which makes spamming into smokes riskier. An HE grenade briefly clears part of a smoke, opening a gap you or a teammate can shoot through.

  • Control your throw. Left-click throws long, right-click throws short, and nearly every grenade bounces.
  • Learn one or two smokes per map in the Practice server with Grenade Camera on.
  • Use it before you die with it. An HE grenade that does 10 damage beats one lying next to your body, but random molotovs can block your own team.
  • Time it with your team. A flash only helps if a teammate is close enough to fight while the enemy is blinded.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Don’t shoot while running - Counter-strafe to a stop first, or your shots will spread.
  2. Don’t buy alone - One player buying while four teammates save usually weakens everyone.
  3. Don’t reload normally in a tense standoff - Hold the reload key for a silent reload, and accept that it takes longer.
  4. Don’t skip the defuse kit on CT buy rounds - Plenty of rounds are lost because no CT bought one, and a kit cuts the defuse from 10 seconds to 5.
  5. Don’t swing wide with no one to trade - Peek small unless a teammate can punish the enemy who kills you.
  6. Don’t use keyboard automation to counter-strafe - It is detected on official servers and gets you kicked.
