DELTARUNE Beginner Tips - Chapters, ACT, Recruits, and Saves

Spoiler-light DELTARUNE beginner tips for chapter scope, ACT, SPARE, PACIFY, TP, recruits, Storage, save import, and demo/full-game differences.

On this page

DELTARUNE is Toby Fox’s chapter-based RPG about party battles, ACT choices, sparing enemies, bullet-dodging turns, Castle Town progress, and chapter completion data. Steam lists DELTARUNE as developed and published by tobyfox; console store credits can differ.

The full DELTARUNE product includes Chapters 1-5, with more chapters planned as free updates. The free demo remains Chapters 1 and 2. This is a broad DELTARUNE guide, not a Chapter 2-only guide, and it avoids route assumptions for later chapters.

Content warning: Official DELTARUNE pages list Teen descriptors for Language, Suggestive Themes, Mild Blood, and Fantasy Violence. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on play.

Spoiler note: This is a spoiler-light systems guide. It avoids exact routes, secret-boss unlock steps, puzzle answers, ending/path details, recruit counts, and chapter-specific boss tactics.

Essential Tips

1. Play in Chapter Order the First Time

You can start later chapters, but the story and systems make more sense in sequence.

DELTARUNE lets players pick up chapters without starting the whole game over. For a first run, still play from Chapter 1 forward so party mechanics, Castle Town context, and completion data build naturally.

2. Separate the Demo From the Full Game

Chapters 1 and 2 are the free demo; later chapters belong to the paid full product.

If you are using the demo, do not plan around Chapters 3-5 systems or future Chapter 6 notes. If you buy the full game, check whether your platform can import demo saves before replaying.

3. Treat DELTARUNE as Its Own Game

It is related to UNDERTALE, but it is not just Undertale’s route logic with a party.

Expect familiar faces, jokes, and ideas, but do not assume Undertale habits map cleanly onto DELTARUNE. Party turns, TP, chapter completion data, recruits, and Castle Town all change how decisions carry forward.

4. Use ACT Deliberately

Nonviolent battles usually start with Kris choosing ACT.

Read each enemy’s ACT options before attacking. Many encounters are designed around learning what an enemy wants, then using SPARE or PACIFY once the game shows the right cue.

5. Watch Mercy and TIRED Cues

Yellow and blue enemy names tell you when a fight can end cleanly.

Enemies that reach spare readiness can be SPARED. TIRED enemies can often be handled with Ralsei’s PACIFY if you have enough TP. Do not keep pushing damage or extra ACTs after the battle has already given you a clean exit.

6. Save TP for PACIFY and Safety

The TP meter is not just for damage.

DEFEND, attacks, and close bullet dodges can build TP. Keep enough available for PACIFY or defensive magic instead of spending every bit as soon as it appears.

7. Use Party Actions After They Unlock

Later battle systems are there to shorten repeat work.

From Chapter 2 onward, Susie and Ralsei gain ways to help with enemy-specific actions. If battles start feeling slow, check whether the whole party can contribute to Mercy or TIRED setup instead of making Kris do every step alone.

8. Spare Standard Enemies if You Care About Town Progress

Recruitment starts in Chapter 2 and can affect Castle Town.

If you want a livelier Castle Town, lean on ACT, SPARE, and PACIFY for standard enemies. Defeating recruitable enemies violently can create Lost enemies, so choose violence only when you mean it.

9. Treat Hidden Bosses as Optional Challenges

They are not first-clear requirements.

DELTARUNE advertises difficult hidden bosses, but this guide does not route them. Save before suspicious optional content, stock healing, check equipment, and leave if a fight is clearly beyond your current comfort level.

10. Use Completion Data Intentionally

A finished chapter can carry more than story memory forward.

Completion data can carry collected items, money, equipment, and choices into the next chapter. Starting a later chapter without it is allowed, but it uses a default state, so know which kind of file you are playing.

11. Check Chapter Availability Before Buying for One Chapter

This game is still chapter-update sensitive.

Chapters 1-5 are available, and Chapter 6 is planned for later. Treat future-chapter timing, platform store wording, and version-specific claims as subject to change.

Chapter Scope

TopicSpoiler-Light Guidance
Broad guide scopeCovers the overall DELTARUNE product, not one chapter only
Chapter 2 targetChapter 2 has its own scope, setting, systems, and route material

Later chaptersMore are planned as free updates
UndertaleTreat it as a parallel/different-world connection, not required route homework

Combat Habits

HabitWhy It Helps
Check ACT before FIGHTNonviolent progress usually begins there
Read enemy name cuesYellow/star and blue/TIRED cues show clean exits
Keep some TP bankedPACIFY needs TP, and defensive magic may matter
DEFEND with idle charactersIt reduces damage and helps build meter
Graze only when safeClose dodges can help TP, but taking hits is still costly
Use party actions laterS-Action and R-Action can speed up Mercy setup
Save before optional fightsHidden bosses can be a large jump in difficulty
Stop before route guidesExact route guides can reveal more than you wanted

Saves, Recruits, and Inventory

DELTARUNE is lenient about starting chapters, but it still rewards clean file habits.

SystemBeginner Habit
Save pointsSave before major pushes, optional rooms, and long combat stretches
Demo importKeep demo save data on the same account/platform where required
Completion dataFinish a chapter on the file you want to continue from
Default stateUse it for casual replay, not for an assumed perfect carryover
RecruitsSpare standard enemies if you want Castle Town benefits
Lost enemiesAvoid violent defeats when recruitment matters
StorageFrom Chapter 2 onward, move consumables at SAVE points
EquipmentCheck weapons and armor separately from consumable storage

If your Pocket is getting full, do not treat every consumable as disposable. From Chapter 2 onward, Storage gives you more room for healing and utility items, while equipment still needs its own attention.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not mash FIGHT through standard enemies - From Chapter 2 onward, violent defeats can undermine recruitment plans.

  2. Do not spend all TP before checking PACIFY - A TIRED enemy may be ready to leave if Ralsei has enough meter.

  3. Do not ignore yellow or blue enemy names - Those cues often mean the fight can end without more risk.

  4. Do not skip SAVE points before optional rooms - A manual save protects you from item waste and difficult hidden fights.

  5. Do not start a later chapter blindly on a new file - Without completion data, the chapter uses a default state.

  6. Do not leave your Pocket full for long - Full inventories can make item routing worse, especially before major fights.

  7. Do not forget equipment when managing Storage - Consumables and equipment are separate problems.

  8. Do not hold the text-skip habit through first-time scenes - Fast text is useful for replays, but it can flatten a first run.

  9. Do not force hidden bosses during a first clear - Optional difficulty is best approached with saves, supplies, and patience.
