Quick Answer
For a steadier start, try Royalty for ranged magic, explore Boletaria for shortcuts and the Cling Ring, and save fire items for Phalanx. After that boss, unlock leveling in the Nexus and try other Archstones when progress stalls. Learn difficult routes in Soul Form: dying that way does not push their World Tendency toward black.
This guide covers the 2020 PS5 remake, not the PS3 original. Its inventory conveniences belong to the remake. The advice is beginner-friendly; the combat still demands patience.
Content warning: mature fantasy violence, blood, and gore. This guide stays non-graphic.
Choose a Starting Approach
Royalty is a useful starting choice if you want room to observe enemies. It begins with Soul Arrow and a catalyst for ranged attacks, plus a sword and shield for closer encounters. Its Fragrant Ring gradually restores MP; treat that as support between encounters, not permission to cast without watching your remaining magic.
Your class sets your starting kit rather than locking your future. Choose equipment and spells you enjoy, then work toward their stat requirements. Avoid buying unrelated stat increases simply to make every number even. You do not need a perfect late-game build before learning the first area.
Make Your First Boletaria Runs Count
Prioritize Shortcuts and the Cling Ring
In the opening castle, look for gates, levers, and routes that reconnect with familiar ground. A shorter return journey makes another attempt more manageable. After opening a shortcut, pause to understand where it leads instead of immediately pushing deeper.
Look for the Cling Ring between the gates of an early castle shortcut. Equip it when playing in Soul Form to reduce that form’s health penalty. This is a more sustainable early habit than repeatedly spending items to restore Body Form just for exploration.
Check Equipment Burden Before Heading Out
There are two different weight limits. Item Burden concerns everything carried; Equipment Burden concerns equipped gear and your mobility. To keep your roll nimble, aim below half your maximum Equipment Burden. After changing armor or weapons, check the total and test a roll somewhere clear.
On PS5, unwanted inventory items and pickups you cannot carry can be sent to Stockpile Thomas. Use storage for spare gear and materials. Emptying inventory is useful, but it is not a substitute for lightening equipped armor when your roll becomes slow.
Build a Repeatable Combat Routine
Take encounters one enemy at a time when possible. Start cautiously enough to recognize an attack before deciding how to answer it. For an unfamiliar boss, spend an attempt observing and defending instead of measuring success only by damage dealt.
Let Your Shield Down at Safe Moments
Blocking hits drains stamina, and holding your shield up slows its recovery. When you have space and the enemy is not about to strike, lower your guard briefly. Raise it again for the next exchange. Keeping it raised indefinitely can leave you without enough stamina to absorb another hit.
Use a short attack-and-reset rhythm while learning. A missed chance to deal damage is preferable to committing again when you have lost track of the enemy or your stamina.
Change Damage Type When Attacks Barely Work
An apparently stronger weapon is not always better against a particular enemy. Stonefang Tunnel’s Scale Miners are vulnerable to piercing and magic damage. If ordinary attacks feel ineffective there, compare a suitable piercing attack or spell before assuming you need many more levels. Test one change at a time so you can see what helped.
Prepare for Phalanx and Unlock Leveling
Use Fire to Open the Formation
Save Firebombs and Turpentine found during the opening stage for Phalanx. The boss’s shielded Hoplites and central body are weak to fire. Clear enough protectors to expose the center; defeating every small enemy is not required to finish the boss.
Put Firebombs on your quick-use bar before entering. Aim at clustered Hoplites so a throw can catch several, then attack the exposed boss when you have an opening. Royalty can also use Soul Arrow against the Hoplites, including from their shielded front; bring Spice if you expect to need more MP.
Return to the Nexus After Victory
You cannot level up before defeating Phalanx, so repeating the opening area will not unlock leveling by itself. After victory, touch the boss Archstone to collect its soul and use it to return to the Nexus. Speak with the Maiden in Black, follow her direction to the Monumental, then return to her to spend souls on levels.
Recover Souls Without Compounding a Loss
Souls pay for character growth and purchases. When you die, the carried souls can be recovered, but dying again before reaching them loses that previous stash permanently.
Treat recovery as its own objective. Take the route you understand, deal carefully with enemies on the way, and postpone optional exploration until you have reclaimed the loss. Rushing because the previous attempt went badly is a poor reason to abandon the approach that got you there.
Once leveling is available, consider returning through a known Archstone when you have enough souls for a useful purchase or level. Spending some on healing grass or other needed supplies is worthwhile too. Do not enter a long unfamiliar stretch with an empty supply bar merely to preserve every soul for stats.
Manage Body Form and World Tendency
Soul Form Is Useful for Learning
Body Form gives you your full health bar. Death in that form leaves you in Soul Form with substantially reduced available health; the Cling Ring helps. Defeating a boss or using a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes restores Body Form.
Body Form also lets you host summoned helpers, but online play brings invasion risk. Multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. For solo practice, staying in Soul Form avoids the world-tendency penalty attached to a Body Form death in a stage.
Know Which Deaths Change the World
Each Archstone world has its own tendency:
- Defeating its main bosses shifts that world toward white.
- Dying there in Body Form shifts it toward black.
- Dying there in Soul Form does not cause that shift.
- Losing Body Form in the Nexus does not darken an Archstone world.
Whiter worlds have weaker enemies; blacker worlds have tougher enemies and better soul and rare-item rewards. For a first clear, avoid deliberately making a difficult area harder for its drops. Return to the Nexus before checking the results of tendency changes.
After a boss restores your body, you can return to the Nexus and use an in-game fall there to resume Soul Form without darkening a world. Recover your dropped souls before leaving. This is an optional solo-learning routine, not a requirement for finishing the game.
Character Tendency is separate. Killing harmless NPCs can darken it, and attacking friendly characters can also cost access to their services. Keep combat experiments away from merchants.
Use the Nexus and Change Routes
After the opening boss, the other usable Archstones become available. You are not expected to finish every section of one world before visiting another. Try a different first area when an encounter stops being productive.
Before leaving the Nexus, repair equipment with Boldwin, sort storage with Thomas, and check healing supplies. Choose one goal for the next trip: recover souls, scout a route, or attempt a boss.
Common Mistakes
- Restoring Body Form after every defeat: repeated Body Form deaths in a stage can make that world harder.
- Ignoring equipped weight: storing spare items alone does not fix an overly heavy equipment load.
- Spending every soul on levels: leave room for supplies you will actually use.
- Rushing a recovery run: another death can erase the souls you were trying to retrieve.
