Diablo II: Lord of Destruction by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment expands Diablo II with Act V, Assassin, Druid, runewords, new item systems, and stronger hireling support.
Content warning: ESRB rates Diablo II: Lord of Destruction M for Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore, and Violence.
This guide is for learning Lord of Destruction’s expansion systems. It covers fundamentals rather than exact builds, ladder-only recommendations, boss farming routes, or current D2R meta.
A note on difficulty: Lord of Destruction continues after Act IV, and Act V is designed as a step up from the base game’s finale. Treat it as an expansion difficulty check, not a bonus lap.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Expansion Mode as a Separate Ruleset
Lord of Destruction changes more than the final act.
Expansion characters get access to LoD systems such as Act V, Assassin, Druid, runewords, expanded item types, improved hirelings, and the larger stash. Non-expansion Diablo II characters do not use the same pool of characters, items, or multiplayer games.
2. Convert Old Characters Deliberately
A converted character does not go back to classic Diablo II play.
If you bring an existing Diablo II character into the expansion, make sure you are ready to keep that character in Lord of Destruction. The expansion split matters for trading, multiplayer, and which item systems that character can use.
3. Pick Assassin or Druid for the Mechanics
The new classes ask you to manage different combat patterns.
Assassin is built around martial arts charges, finishing moves, traps, and shadow utility. Druid is built around elemental spells, shapeshifting, summons, vines, and spirits. Pick the class whose decisions sound readable to you, then keep the early build focused.
4. Do Not Button-Mash Assassin Charges
Martial Arts only works cleanly when you understand setup and release.
Charge-up skills build effects, then normal attacks or finishing moves release them. If you play Assassin, watch what you are charging, what releases the charge, and whether your weapon setup supports the skill you are using.
5. Keep Trap Plans Simple Early
Traps are useful because they let you fight without standing still.
Assassin traps have placement limits, and some trap damage runs into resistance issues later. Use traps to control space and reduce risk, but do not assume every trap setup will scale through every difficulty without gear and skill planning.
6. Choose a Druid Identity Before Spending Everywhere
Elemental, shapeshifting, and summoning do not all ask for the same habits.
Elemental Druids cast from range and protect against elements. Shapeshifting Druids fight through wolf or bear forms and lose access to many spells while shifted. Summoning Druids manage spirits, vines, and animal summons. Mixing is possible, but a first character should avoid scattering points without a plan.
7. Prepare for Act V Before Charging Forward
Harrogath is not just another town with tougher monsters outside.
Act V adds large outdoor areas, fortress objectives, dangerous corpse interactions, the Ancients, and Baal’s final sequence. Keep resistances, potions, mercenary gear, and escape paths current before pushing deep into a new area.
8. Save Larzuk’s Socket Reward for a Real Item
The socket quest can be wasted on gear you replace immediately.
Larzuk can add sockets, but the result depends on the item rules. Do not spend that reward on a random temporary item just because the quest is complete. Hold it until the base item actually fits a runeword, build need, or long-term gear plan.
9. Take Resistance Rewards Seriously
Act V keeps testing elemental survival.
Prison of Ice rewards permanent resistance, and harder difficulties punish weak defenses. When an area suddenly feels unfair, check resistances before blaming the class.
10. Learn Runeword Rules Before Using Runes
Runewords fail when the base item, socket count, rune order, or item quality is wrong.
Use the exact item type, exact number of sockets, non-magical socketed gear, correct runes, and correct order. A failed runeword still leaves the inserted runes spent.
11. Treat Your Hireling as Gear-Dependent
LoD mercenaries are part of the character, not background scenery.
Hirelings can gain experience, follow between acts and difficulties, use equipment, and be resurrected with their gear intact. Keep their weapon, armor, helm, and resistances relevant, and remove their gear before replacing them.
12. Respect Nihlathak, the Ancients, and Baal
The expansion’s final stretch punishes careless repeats.
Nihlathak can turn corpses against you. The Ancients reset if the fight is abandoned. Baal uses duplicates and a long throne-room sequence before the final chamber. Slow down, refill, and change your approach after a bad death instead of running back into the same mistake.
Combat Tips
- Pull Act V enemies in smaller groups: Large packs are easier when only part of the screen is active.
- Keep space around objectives: Fortress prisons, summit fights, and throne-room waves are safer with a fallback path.
- Deny Nihlathak useful corpses: Remove or avoid minion corpses so Corpse Explosion cannot turn the room against you.
- Stay in the Ancients fight once it starts: Leaving, opening a Town Portal, or losing everyone from the summit resets the encounter.
- Track Baal instead of chasing every target: When Baal creates a duplicate, focus on identifying and damaging the real boss.
Resource Management
- Expansion conversion: Convert old characters only when you are done using them in non-expansion games.
- Runes: Check the recipe, base item, socket count, item quality, and order before inserting anything.
- Socket rewards: Save Larzuk’s reward for an item that matters beyond the next few drops.
- Resistance: Treat permanent resistance rewards and resistance gear as campaign progression tools.
- Hireling gear: Upgrade mercenary equipment as Act V damage rises, and recover their gear before hiring a replacement.
- Stash and weapon swap: Use the expanded stash and alternate weapon setup to support real needs, not to hoard every possible item.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Does | Beginner Habit |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion character split | LoD characters cannot play or trade with non-expansion characters | Decide before converting old characters |
| Exact runeword sockets | A runeword needs the exact socket count | Do not put a three-rune word in a four-socket item |
| Rune order | Runes must be inserted in sequence | Read the recipe twice before socketing |
| Non-magical bases | Magic, rare, set, and unique items do not accept normal runewords | Use plain socketed bases for runewords |
| Larzuk sockets | Socket results depend on item rules | Save the quest reward until the item is worth it |
| Ancients reset | Leaving the fight or opening a portal resets the encounter | Refill before starting the altar fight |
| Rite of Passage credit | The Ancients quest has minimum level requirements by difficulty | Do not attempt credit below the required level |
| Mercenary gear loss | Replacing a hireling can forfeit equipped items | Remove gear before hiring someone new |
| Ethereal merc gear | Hireling equipment does not lose durability | Consider ethereal gear for mercenaries when requirements fit |
| Druid summon limits | Spirits and major animal summons replace others in their group | Choose the summon package you want active |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not convert a classic character casually - Expansion conversion changes where that character can play and trade.
- Avoid spreading Assassin skill points across every idea - Charges, traps, and shadow tools work better with a clear role.
- Do not cast Druid points into every tree without a plan - Shapeshifting, elemental casting, and summoning ask for different priorities.
- Avoid spending Larzuk’s socket reward on throwaway gear - The reward is strongest when the item will stay useful.
- Do not socket runes from memory - Wrong order, wrong item type, wrong socket count, or magical gear can waste the attempt.
- Avoid ignoring Act V resistances - Harrogath’s later quests punish fragile characters.
- Do not replace a mercenary before removing their gear - The old hireling’s equipment can be lost.
- Avoid opening a Town Portal during the Ancients fight - That resets the encounter.
- Do not leave Nihlathak surrounded by usable corpses - Corpse Explosion can turn a manageable room into a sudden death.
