Nidhogg Beginner Tips - Fencing, Right-of-Way, and Goal Runs

Nidhogg beginner tips for sword stances, right-of-way, movement, respawns, unarmed options, goal runs, and common mistakes.

Nidhogg is the 2014 fencing tug-of-war game by Messhof, not Nidhogg 2 and not a general Norse mythology article. The PC/Mac release listings identify Messhof as developer and publisher, while PlayStation release listings credit Code Mystics Inc. for the PS4/Vita ports with Messhof as publisher.

Content note: Nidhogg includes Animated Blood and Fantasy Violence. This guide keeps the stylized swordplay non-graphic and focused on in-game decisions.

Use this as a beginner guide for the original Nidhogg’s duel flow: sword height, spacing, respawns, right-of-way, unarmed recovery, and goal runs. It does not cover current online service behavior, tournament meta, exact advanced techniques, or map-specific tricks.

Essential Tips

1. Play for the Goal, Not Just the Kill

A duel win is only the opening.

Nidhogg is a tug-of-war. Killing the other player gives you the chance to move toward your goal, but the opponent comes back and can reverse the flow. After every kill, ask whether you should sprint, slow down to meet the respawn, or take a safer route forward.

2. Understand Right-of-Way

Control belongs to the player pushing toward their goal.

When you have right-of-way, make ground without becoming careless. When you lose it, your job is to stop the run and flip control back. This keeps you focused on the match state instead of taking every duel as an isolated fight.

3. Treat Sword Height as a Decision

Low, middle, and high positions change the duel.

Blades meeting at the same height can clash, and timed height changes can create disarms. Do not hold one height forever. Shift your sword with a purpose: cover the line your opponent is attacking, threaten a different line, or force them to react before you lunge.

4. Do Not Lunge Just Because You Are Close

Range matters more than panic.

If both players are armed and standing near each other, a rushed attack often gives the other player an easy answer. Take small steps, adjust height, and attack when the distance and line make sense.

5. Throw the Sword Only With a Plan

A throw can solve a problem or create one.

Sword throws can surprise an opponent or interrupt a run, but missing leaves you swordless. Before throwing, know what you will do next: recover a nearby weapon, close in with unarmed moves, or use the opening to run.

6. Practice Swordless Recovery

You are not helpless without a weapon.

Nidhogg gives unarmed players options such as punches, sweeps, dive kicks, rolls, and movement recovery. Beginners often freeze after losing the sword. Instead, move immediately, look for a pickup, and use unarmed actions to buy enough time to reset.

7. Get Up With Intent

Knockdowns are short, messy, and important.

When you are knocked down, recover toward a useful position instead of mashing randomly. Rolling back to standing, getting away from the opponent’s line, or recovering a sword on the ground can turn a lost exchange into a new duel.

8. Use Running for Space, Steps for Fencing

The match asks for both speed and control.

Running is how you convert right-of-way into progress, but close fencing needs cleaner spacing. When the opponent is near, slow down enough to manage sword height and timing. When the path opens, take the ground.

9. Expect the Respawn

The next opponent is part of the same fight.

Do not celebrate after a kill and drift forward. Watch where the next body is coming from, keep your sword ready, and be prepared to change from running to dueling in an instant.

10. Respect Terrain Without Chasing Tricks

Rooms shape fights, but fundamentals still come first.

Arenas have formations and chokepoints, so your route and spacing matter. At beginner level, focus on simple terrain habits: avoid cornering yourself, keep room to recover, and do not jump or roll into a line you cannot defend.

11. Reset After a Reversal

Momentum flips constantly.

Losing right-of-way is normal. The worst response is to rush the next duel out of frustration. Rebuild your stance, take the space you are given, and look for one clean stop.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not chase kills after earning right-of-way - Move toward the goal instead of turning every exchange into another duel.

  2. Do not hold one sword height forever - Predictable stance gives the opponent easier clashes, disarms, and attacks.

  3. Do not throw your sword with no follow-up - A missed throw can hand the other player an armed advantage.

  4. Do not freeze when you are unarmed - Punch, sweep, dive, roll, reposition, or recover a weapon.

  5. Do not sprint directly into a respawn - Be ready to stop, fence, or change route before the opponent reverses control.

  6. Do not roll without knowing where you will stand up - Recovery movement is useful only if the exit is safe.

  7. Do not lunge from bad distance - Step into a better line before committing.

  8. Do not jump into a defended sword line - Use aerial movement to change space, not to donate a free hit.

  9. Do not corner yourself while defending - Leave room to step, roll, or recover after a clash.

  10. Do not panic after losing momentum - One clean stop can flip the match back.
