Forza Horizon 2 is the 2014 Horizon Festival game set around Southern France and Northern Italy. This guide is primarily for the Xbox One base game, with Xbox 360 differences called out where they apply. It is not a guide for the Colorado original, Australia in Forza Horizon 3, Britain in Forza Horizon 4, Mexico in Forza Horizon 5, or later Horizon entries.
Content note: ESRB rates Forza Horizon 2 E10+ with Mild Lyrics, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Mild Violence. This guide keeps that context non-graphic and focuses on racing and progression.
Forza Support says Forza Horizon 2 and its DLC were delisted on September 30, 2018, and online services closed on August 22, 2023. Treat this as an offline-first guide for players who already have access to the game and any add-ons they want to use.
Essential Tips
1. Check Which Version You Are Playing
Xbox One and Xbox 360 are not interchangeable.
The Xbox One version is the main target for dynamic weather, Wheelspins, Car Meets, tuning setup sharing, and DLC. The Xbox 360 version has major differences, including no DLC or updates and several missing or changed systems. Before following any route, confirm your platform and do not assume an Xbox One feature exists on Xbox 360.
2. Let Road Trips Lead the Campaign
The campaign is built around travel between festival destinations.
After championships, the game sends you on road trips to the next destination. Use those drives to learn the map, pass through towns, and pick up nearby activity markers instead of wandering aimlessly for hours before the next championship.
3. Prioritize Championships Until the Finale Opens
Championship progress is the cleanest path through the story.
The campaign follows a championship-to-Finale structure, so keep it moving by completing local championship events after each road trip. Free roam is useful, but championships are the reliable backbone.
4. Treat Showcases as Route Discipline Tests
Fast cars still lose time when they miss checkpoints.
Showcases are spectacle events, but they still reward clean route reading. Watch checkpoint placement, slow down before awkward corners, and use rewind when a mistake would cost more time than a reset.
5. Hit Boards When They Are Already Nearby
Boards make later cleanup easier.
XP boards and Fast Travel boards are worth grabbing during normal drives. You do not need to stop the campaign for a full map sweep, but obvious boards near your route are useful because they support experience gains and cheaper fast travel later.
6. Spend Perks With Cleanup in Mind
Perks can turn a long cleanup into a shorter one.
Skill points come from driving actions such as clean racing, near misses, drifting, and drafting. If you plan to complete many events after the Finale, consider utility perks that reduce travel friction before spending every point on short-term bonuses.
7. Use Horizon Promo as a Habit
Photo progress is easier when you start early.
When Horizon Promo becomes relevant, take photos of starting grids and distinctive challenge cars as you encounter them. Waiting until the end turns a natural side task into a much duller checklist.
8. Buy and Upgrade for Your Current Championship
Do not build a fantasy garage before you need one.
The Autoshow and Garage open up plenty of choices, and the Xbox One version supports tuning. Keep spending tied to the car classes and championships you are actually running instead of trying to own or modify everything immediately.
9. Keep DLC Separate From Base Progress
Storm Island and Porsche content are add-on paths, not required base-game steps.
Storm Island, Porsche Expansion, Car Pass, VIP, car packs, and Fast & Furious content are all delisted. Use them only if your account already owns and can launch them, and do not make DLC cars or DLC events the center of a base-game route.
10. Do Not Plan Around Online Services
The official closure changes what a new route should assume.
After the 2023 service closure, treat online road trips, co-op Bucket Lists, clubs, leaderboards, Rivals, Car Meets, tune/livery sharing, and online achievements as unavailable unless they work on your current setup. Build your first playthrough around offline championships, Showcases, boards, skills, photos, garage work, and owned single-player content.
Version and Service Checks
| Topic | What to Assume | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One version | Primary guide target | Main target for weather, Wheelspins, Car Meets, tuning, and DLC |
| Xbox 360 version | Related but different | Missing or changed systems mean Xbox One tips may not transfer |
| Xbox Series X | S | Check owned-copy behavior on your setup |
| New digital purchase | Do not assume availability | Official support says the game and DLC were delisted |
| DLC | Already-owned-only | Storm Island, Porsche, car packs, and passes are not safe route assumptions |
| Online features | Treat as unavailable until tested | Official support says online services closed August 22, 2023 |
| Later Horizon entries | Separate games | Their maps, service models, progression, and car systems are different |
Progression Priorities
| Situation | First Move | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| You finish a championship | Follow the next road trip | Keeps the campaign structure moving |
| New local championship events appear | Complete the set before heavy free roam | Builds toward the Finale without losing focus |
| A Showcase opens | Run it with checkpoint discipline | These events are route tests, not just spectacles |
| You pass a board near your path | Smash it before leaving the area | Supports XP and fast-travel cleanup |
| You earn skill points | Pick perks that match your near-term goals | Perks can help travel, cleanup, and rewards |
| Horizon Promo is active | Photograph grids and unique cars naturally | Prevents a late-game photo grind |
| DLC becomes visible | Confirm ownership and launch behavior first | Delisted add-ons vary by account access |
| An online task appears | Set it aside unless it works on your setup | Service closure can block or change online goals |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not ignore championships after each road trip - Free roam is useful, but championships are the main path to the Finale.
-
Do not treat Xbox One and Xbox 360 tips as identical - The versions have different features and content support.
-
Do not cut blindly through Showcase checkpoints - Open terrain still has checkpoint rules, and missed gates waste time.
-
Do not drive past every board until the end - Nearby XP and Fast Travel boards make later cleanup less repetitive.
-
Do not spend perks without a plan - Utility perks can matter once you start crossing the map for cleanup.
-
Do not wait until late game to use Horizon Promo - Photos are easier when you take them during races and challenges.
-
Do not buy or upgrade every tempting car immediately - Build around the championships you are running now.
-
Do not start a DLC route before confirming it launches - Delisted expansions and car packs depend on prior ownership.
-
Do not queue for online goals before offline progress - Closed services can block multiplayer, co-op, Rivals, club, and leaderboard plans.
