DmC: Devil May Cry: Vergil’s Downfall is a Mature-rated action DLC by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom. It follows Vergil in a separate chapter after the base game’s story and is also included with DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition.
Content warning: this guide discusses a Mature-rated action game with intense combat, blood, gore, nudity, sexual content, drug references, and strong language in non-graphic terms.
These tips focus on Vergil’s combat rhythm, upgrades, Devil Trigger spending, enemy control, and boss discipline.
Essential Tips
1. Stop Playing Vergil Like Dante
Vergil has familiar DmC structure around arenas, style, dodging, launchers, and enemy control, but he is not a Dante reskin. Dante rotates through multiple weapons and has broader crowd tools. Vergil is built around Yamato, Summoned Swords, teleporting movement, precise launch control, and meter-backed pressure.
On your first mission, give yourself permission to feel less powerful. Vergil starts narrower, then becomes much more stable once his key tools are upgraded and later abilities arrive. If you keep trying to solve every crowd by switching weapons, you will miss what his kit actually does well: isolating targets, dragging them back into reach, and keeping them staggered.
2. Make Summoned Swords Part of Every Plan
Summoned Swords are not just a ranged poke. They support Demon Pull, Angel Lift, shield pressure, Wisp handling, stagger, and several of Vergil’s strongest setups. Build the habit of using them while you move and attack instead of treating them as a separate mode.
This matters because Vergil can keep pressure going while repositioning. A target that tries to drift away can be pulled back. A shielded enemy can be softened for a real opening. A ghostlike Wisp can be forced into a hittable state before you commit to sword attacks.
3. Prioritize Devil Trigger Capacity Early
Vergil leans harder on Devil Trigger than Dante does in this DLC. Devil Trigger fuels some of the tools that make difficult fights cleaner, especially Spiral Swords and Doppelganger. More capacity gives you more room to solve bad enemy groups without being forced back into raw sword play too quickly.
Do not spend every meter window the instant it appears. Spiral Swords can protect, stagger, and build style while you work. Doppelganger can speed up kills later, but it also competes for the same meter. Treat Devil Trigger as a tactical tool, not a simple damage button.
4. Buy Tools That Open New Answers
Early Upgrade Points are strongest when they unlock answers, not just damage. Enemy Step enables Jump Cancel habits. Summoned Sword upgrades make core control stronger. Spiral Swords becomes a major style and safety tool. Perfect Slice gives Vergil a charged ranged area option. Solar Flare launches most enemies and creates air routes. Blistering Swords is especially valuable when Witch shields start causing problems.
You do not need to master every stylish route immediately. Focus on a compact toolkit that answers the main question in front of you: can you launch it, pull it, shield-break it, stagger it, or escape it?
5. Use Rapid Slash as an Escape, Not Just an Attack
Rapid Slash does not need to be your highest-damage move to be useful. Its value is movement and safety. When enemies close in from awkward angles or an arena starts boxing you in, Rapid Slash can carry you out of danger while still keeping Vergil active.
This is especially helpful while you are still learning his dodge feel. Panic dodging can still put you in the wrong place, while Rapid Slash gives you another way to reset spacing before you rebuild pressure.
6. Launch Heavy Enemies Before They Run the Fight
Solar Flare and Atomic are important because they let Vergil move fights vertically. Heavy enemies become much less scary when they are staggered in the air or locked into repeated Jump Cancel pressure. This is a practical habit, not just a combo-video trick.
Use launch control when grounded pressure feels unsafe. Butchers, Tyrants, and Imprisoners can punish lazy approaches. If the enemy can be launched, get it off the floor and keep it there long enough to deal damage or clear smaller threats.
7. Learn One Jump Cancel Loop
Enemy Step makes Vergil’s Jump Cancel routes more approachable than they first look. You do not need a full advanced combo library. Learn one simple air-control rhythm that lets you relaunch, step, and keep a dangerous enemy suspended.
Start with easy targets before trying it on the worst enemies. The goal is confidence: jump, pull or launch, hit, step, repeat. If the timing falls apart, land safely and reset instead of mashing until you get hit.
8. Match the Tool to the Enemy Type
Vergil’s best habit is quick diagnosis. Witches need shield answers before real damage starts. Wisps need Summoned Swords before they can be handled properly. Death Knights punish careless Spiral Swords use against their shields. Tyrants reward back attacks, knockdowns, and charge baiting. Imprisoners are safest when launched and controlled.
This DLC can feel unfair if every enemy gets the same response. Before spending meter, identify the problem. Is it shielded, evasive, heavy, airborne, or crowding you? Then choose the matching tool.
9. Keep Spiral Swords Active When It Solves the Crowd
Spiral Swords is one of Vergil’s most important stabilizers. It can protect his space, stagger nearby enemies, add damage, and build style while you continue attacking. In messy fights, that extra pressure can be the difference between controlled aggression and getting interrupted out of every combo.
The catch is meter. Use Spiral Swords when enemies are close enough for it to matter, when a shield or evasive target needs lockdown, or when you are trying to keep style climbing. If the arena is emptying out, preserve Devil Trigger for the next real opening.
10. Treat Doppelganger as a Later Power Spike
Doppelganger is powerful, but it arrives late enough that it should not define your early habits. By the time you unlock it, you should already have a working plan for pulls, launchers, Spiral Swords, and safe dodges. Doppelganger then becomes a way to finish threats faster or support harder difficulty runs.
When you first get it, test it deliberately. Watch how quickly the meter drains and which enemies it helps you delete. If you burn it just because it is available, you may not have enough Devil Trigger for Spiral Swords when the real problem appears.
11. Approach Hollow Vergil With Patience
Hollow Vergil is a discipline check. He uses Vergil-like attacks, teleports, sword pressure, projectiles, and background phases. The biggest early mistake is dodging too soon. Wait for the attack cue, then evade with timing instead of reacting to the teleport alone.
Be careful with casual Summoned Sword shots in this fight, because they can invite a dangerous sword counter. Look for punish windows after committed attacks such as Helmbreaker or after avoiding Killer Bee. When Hollow Vergil moves into the background, stop chasing damage and survive until close-range combat resumes.
12. Separate First Clear From Rank Cleanup
Vergil’s Downfall has six missions, collectibles, unlockable difficulties, and high-rank goals. That does not mean your first clear needs to solve everything. Early Vergil has fewer answers, and the DLC becomes more manageable once upgrades and later tools are available.
Play the first run to learn enemy behavior, movement, and what each upgrade changes. Save strict SSS runs, no-damage attempts, and higher difficulty cleanup for later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not copy Dante’s weapon rhythm - Vergil needs Yamato control, teleports, pulls, and swords rather than constant weapon cycling.
-
Do not ignore Summoned Swords - They enable control, shield pressure, Wisp handling, and safer offense.
-
Do not spend Devil Trigger without a target - Save meter for Spiral Swords, Doppelganger, and dangerous enemy groups.
-
Do not delay Enemy Step forever - Jump Cancel control becomes much easier once this tool is available.
-
Do not fight every heavy enemy on the ground - Launch, pull, bait, or control them before they take over the arena.
-
Do not leave Witches and Wisps alone too long - Their shield and materialization rules can disrupt the whole fight.
-
Do not dodge Hollow Vergil’s teleports too early - Wait for the attack timing and punish the recovery.
-
Do not fire careless swords at Hollow Vergil - Bad projectile habits can trigger a much harder response.
-
Do not chase damage during background phases - Survive the pattern and prepare for the next close-range window.
-
Do not demand SSS ranks on the first run - Clear, upgrade, learn the arenas, then return for cleanup.
