Genshin Impact, developed by miHoYo and published globally by COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD., is an open-world action RPG about exploring Teyvat, building teams of elemental characters, completing quests, claiming progression rewards, and choosing carefully when to spend limited currencies.
Content note: ESRB rates Genshin Impact T for Teen with Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Use of Alcohol, plus Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). This guide stays gameplay-focused.
This guide is for new and returning players learning daily progression, exploration, resin, wishes, and team basics. It is not a banner recommendation, character tier list, artifact route, Spiral Abyss guide, Stygian Onslaught guide, or current-meta build sheet.
Patch note: This guide is scoped to Version Luna VIII. Banner, character, weapon, artifact, platform, and endgame advice can change after major updates.
Essential Tips
1. Follow the Main Quest Until Systems Open
Early quests unlock the parts of Genshin that make the daily loop work.
Do not judge the whole game from the first few fights. Push the early Archon Quest path far enough to open core menus, the Adventurers’ Guild rhythm, commissions, and the Wish system before you start optimizing every side path.
2. Treat Adventure Rank as Account Progress
Adventure Rank is not just a level number.
Adventure Rank controls rewards and can raise World Level either automatically or through Ascension Quests. If enemies start feeling durable, pause the story sprint and make sure one reliable team has current levels, weapons, talents, and usable artifacts.
3. Open Waypoints as You Explore
Fast travel saves more time than rushing past every marker.
Genshin’s open world gets much easier when you build a travel network. Activate nearby teleport points, Statues, and obvious routes while questing so future commissions, material runs, bosses, and events do not become long walks.
4. Spend Original Resin With a Goal
Resin is for claiming rewards, not for winning the fight itself.
Original Resin is used to claim rewards from Ley Lines, Domains, bosses, and some event challenges. Spend it on what your team needs next: character EXP, Mora, boss materials, talent materials, weapon materials, or artifact upgrades.
5. Do Daily Commissions Once Available
Commissions turn short sessions into steady account growth.
Commissions are daily quests tied to the Adventurers’ Guild. When you only have a little time, commissions plus a planned Resin spend are a practical baseline before longer exploration, quests, events, or farming.
6. Build Around Reactions, Not Just Favorites
Elements are a team system.
Elemental Reactions happen when different elemental effects are applied to a target. A good beginner team should apply elements consistently, survive mistakes, and let one or two characters do most of the field work.
7. Read the Kit Before Copying a Build
A character’s job is usually visible in their talents.
Check Normal Attack, Elemental Skill, Elemental Burst, and passives. Ask whether the character wants field time, deals damage from off field, heals, shields, buffs, groups enemies, applies an element, or needs Energy Recharge support.
8. Keep One Main Team Ahead
Spreading resources too widely makes World Level feel worse.
You can experiment, but keep a small core team functional. A half-built roster of ten characters usually feels weaker than four characters with decent levels, weapons, talents, and usable artifacts.
9. Use Wishes Deliberately
A limited banner is a timer, not a command.
Wishes are Genshin’s gacha system. Read the Wish screen Details, use Test Run when available, and remember that event banners, boosted characters, weapons, and guarantee rules are time-limited and separate by wish type.
10. Do Not Chase Meta Pressure Blindly
Five-star characters, constellations, and five-star weapons are not beginner requirements.
KeqingMains specifically warns against assuming only the strongest five-star options or paid upgrades are required for endgame. For a new account, good teams, correct elements, enough energy, and resource focus matter more than panic-pulling.
11. Treat Artifacts as Good-Enough Gear Early
Perfect artifacts are a long-term project.
Artifacts come from many sources and have their own systems for equipping, enhancing, locking, recommendations, and later management. Use decent pieces to keep your team moving, but do not turn beginner progression into endless artifact perfection.
12. Refresh Advice Every Major Update
Genshin changes through versions, events, banners, systems, and platform support.
Version Luna VIII added new areas, characters, story content, and system updates, while its official notes also included fixes and TCG balance adjustments. Current banners, exact meta, and platform details can change between versions.
Team and Build Habits
- Pick an anchor: Choose one character who spends most of the field time or drives the team’s main reaction plan.
- Add elemental application: Bring teammates who apply useful elements from skill, burst, or off-field effects.
- Cover survival: A healer, shielder, defensive utility character, or reliable crowd-control option makes exploration and bosses less punishing.
- Check energy needs: Burst-reliant characters may need Energy Recharge or teammates who help generate the right particles.
- Level weapons sensibly: Weapons directly affect combat output, and each character uses one weapon type.
- Upgrade talents for the actions you use: A character who mainly uses Skill and Burst does not always need the same investment as an on-field normal attacker.
- Use artifact recommendations cautiously: They are useful for orientation, but current character guides are still better before spending rare resources.
- Do not force one template onto every character: Some characters are on-field damage dealers, some are off-field supports, and some exist mainly for buffs, healing, shielding, grouping, or elemental application.
Resource Management
- Original Resin: Spend it on reward claims that support your next team upgrade.
- Primogems and Fates: Save them for banners you actually want after reading the Details screen.
- Mora and EXP materials: Keep enough for your main team instead of leveling every new character immediately.
- Weapon materials: Upgrade weapons that your active team will use for a while.
- Talent materials: Prioritize the talents that match the character’s role.
- Artifacts: Enhance practical pieces, lock promising ones, and delay perfectionism until you know the character’s long-term build.
- Events: Check current event pages because limited events often include useful materials, currency, outfits, or trial access.
- Time: A short daily route of commissions, Resin, and event claims is better than burning out on every available task.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Adventure Rank | Tracks account progression and unlocks rewards | Claim Adventurers’ Guild rewards and watch for World Level changes |
| World Level | Raises the pressure of the world as the account progresses | Keep one team upgraded before pushing harder content |
| Original Resin | Gates reward claims from key activities | Spend it on the next bottleneck for your current team |
| Wish Details | Explains banner pools, boosted items, and guarantee rules | Read it before spending Primogems or Fates |
| Test Run | Lets you try featured characters in fixed lineups | Use it to test feel, not to assume full-account performance |
| Elemental Aura | Lets a second element trigger reactions | Apply elements in a planned order instead of button-mashing |
| Internal Cooldown | Some hits cannot reapply elements every time | Judge reaction teams by consistency over a full rotation |
| Patch Updates | Change events, banners, systems, fixes, and some balance | Refresh builds, banners, and endgame advice after major updates |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not spend Primogems before reading banner Details - Wish types, boosted items, availability, and guarantees are not all the same.
-
Do not level every character equally - A focused team progresses more smoothly than a wide roster with no finished core.
-
Do not ignore Resin because you are busy exploring - Resin reward claims are a major source of materials for character, weapon, talent, and artifact growth.
-
Do not build four characters who all want full field time - Teams need off-field application, utility, energy, and survival, not only damage dealers.
-
Do not chase perfect artifacts too early - Usable gear is enough while you are still learning characters, reactions, and account progression.
-
Do not raise the world’s pressure while your team is neglected - If World Level or an Ascension Quest is coming, upgrade your main characters first.
-
Do not assume a five-star pull solves team building - Strong teams still need reactions, energy, survivability, and the right field-time split.
-
Do not follow old banner or build advice blindly - Genshin is live-service, and Version, event, and character advice can age quickly.
-
Do not skip Test Run when considering a character - A trial cannot prove a full build, but it can reveal whether you like the basic feel.
-
Do not keep PS4 assumptions in current platform advice - Official support for Genshin Impact on PS4 ended on April 8, 2026; check platform support..
