Honkai: Star Rail, developed by miHoYo/HoYoverse studios and published globally by COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD., is a free-to-play space fantasy RPG about exploring worlds from the Astral Express, building four-character teams, winning turn-based battles, and choosing carefully when to spend limited currencies.
Content warning: ESRB rates Honkai: Star Rail T for Teen with Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Simulated Gambling, plus Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). This guide stays gameplay-focused.
This guide is for new and returning players learning early progression, teams, combat, Trailblaze Power, Warps, Light Cones, and Relics. Current banner recommendations, character tier lists, relic optimizers, Memory of Chaos teams, Pure Fiction teams, Apocalyptic Shadow teams, and Version 4.3 endgame sheets change separately.
Patch note: Version 4.3 was the official update on July 7, 2026, and official Version 4.4 marketing was already active. Banner, character, relic, event, endgame, and platform details can change after major updates.
Essential Tips
1. Push Trailblaze Missions Until Systems Open
Early story progress unlocks the account loop.
Do the main Trailblaze Missions before you spend hours sweeping every corner. Early progression opens systems such as Daily Missions, Trailblaze Power, Simulated Universe, Operation Briefing, and Trailblaze Level rewards, so rushing optimization before those unlocks wastes attention.
2. Build One Stable Team First
A functional four-character team beats a scattered roster.
Keep one main team near the current level and Light Cone caps before spreading materials across every new pull. A practical beginner team needs damage, weakness coverage, Skill Point balance, and survival through a healer, shielder, or defensive support.
3. Match Elements to Enemy Weaknesses
Weakness Break makes long fights shorter and safer.
Enemies have HP and Toughness. Matching attacks to an enemy weakness reduces Toughness; reducing it to zero causes Weakness Break and extra effects. Bosses feel much worse when your damage dealers cannot meaningfully touch their Toughness bar.
4. Spend Skill Points on Purpose
Skill Points are shared by the whole team.
Basic Attacks generate Skill Points, while most Skills spend them. If every character wants to use Skill every turn, the team stalls. Let supports Basic Attack when their buff, heal, shield, or debuff is already doing its job.
5. Use Ultimates to Control Turn Flow
Ultimates are not limited to the current character’s turn.
When an Ultimate is charged, you can often use it outside that character’s normal turn. Save that timing for break windows, emergency healing, boss adds, or finishing a wave before the enemy acts.
6. Open Fights With Techniques
The first action can decide the pace of the battle.
Techniques are overworld abilities used before combat. Use buff Techniques before hard fights, then start with a Technique or Basic Attack that matches an enemy weakness. Do not let roaming enemies catch you for free and start the fight as an ambush.
7. Spend Trailblaze Power Before It Caps
Trailblaze Power is your farming timer.
Trailblaze Power regenerates over time and is used to claim rewards from Calyxes, Stagnant Shadow, Cavern of Corrosion, Echo of War, and Simulated Universe rewards. Spend it on the material your main team needs next instead of letting it sit at the cap.
8. Farm Account Materials Before Perfect Relics
Early relic perfection is a trap.
In the early game, character levels, Light Cone levels, Traces, and Ascension materials usually matter more than chasing perfect relic substats. Use usable relics with the right main stats, then farm serious relic sets once better reward tiers are available.
9. Match Light Cone Paths
A Light Cone’s passive only matters when the Path matches.
Characters can equip off-Path Light Cones for base stats, but the Light Cone ability needs a matching Path. Before leveling a Light Cone, check whether your character can actually use its passive.
10. Treat Warps as Account Planning
Limited banners are timers, not orders.
Warps are the gacha system. Stellar Warp is always available, while limited Event Warps rotate and use different passes. Save Stellar Jade and Special Passes for characters or Light Cones you actually want after reading the in-game Details screen.
11. Prepare Before Equilibrium Trials
Raising the world tier improves rewards and pressure.
Equilibrium Trials raise enemy levels and unlock better reward tiers, higher ascension caps, and Trace progress. Before taking one, make sure your main team has EXP, Ascension materials, Light Cone levels, and core Traces ready.
12. Build Toward Multiple Teams Slowly
Endgame wants depth, but beginners need a core.
Version 4.3 added a highest-difficulty Starward Mode where separate teams matter, and the rotating endgame includes Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow. Do not rush three half-built teams; finish a reliable main team, then grow a second and third team deliberately.
13. Recheck Live-Service Advice Every Major Patch
Honkai: Star Rail changes through versions, Warps, relics, events, and endgame rotations.
Current banners, recommended relic sets, best teams, and endgame lineups can age quickly. Before spending premium currency or farming a relic domain for days, compare the advice against the current version notes and in-game screens.
Combat Habits
| Situation | Best Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New enemy group | Check weaknesses before committing | Prevents brute-force team mistakes |
| Hard boss | Bring matching damage plus sustain | Breaks Toughness while keeping the team alive |
| Low Skill Points | Basic Attack with supports | Keeps points for the damage dealer or emergency skill |
| Ultimate ready | Hold for a useful timing window | Can interrupt turn flow or save a bad wave |
| Enemy chasing you | Attack or Technique first | Avoids Ambushed starts |
| Pre-boss setup | Use buff Techniques, then start with an offensive one | Turns Technique charges into early advantage |
| Long fight | Watch Toughness, not only HP | Broken enemies give safer damage windows |
| New character | Read Basic, Skill, Ultimate, Talent, and Technique | Explains their role better than rarity alone |
Resource Management
- Trailblaze Power: Spend it on the next bottleneck for your main team.
- Character EXP: Keep your main team near the current cap before leveling experiments.
- Light Cone EXP: Level the cones your active team actually uses.
- Trace materials: Upgrade the skills, passives, and bonuses that define a character’s job.
- Ascension materials: Stock up before Equilibrium upgrades when possible.
- Relics: Early on, use the right main stat before chasing perfect sets and substats.
- Stellar Jade: Save for limited Warps you intentionally want.
- Standard Passes: Use the free passes you earn, but do not treat the permanent banner as urgent.
- Assignments: Send characters out for passive materials; it does not remove them from combat.
- Endgame rewards: Treat rotating modes as long-term account checks, not beginner chores.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Toughness | Separate bar tied to enemy weaknesses | Bring matching elements for bosses and elites |
| Weakness Break | Adds damage and element-specific effects | Time damage and Ultimates around break windows |
| Skill Points | Shared team resource | Mix spenders with Basic Attack generators |
| Ultimate Queue | Ultimates can be used outside normal turns | Save them for interrupts, heals, breaks, or wave clears |
| Technique Charges | Pre-combat buffs or opener attacks | Use them before bosses and restore with purple containers |
| Light Cone Path | Controls whether the passive works | Match the cone’s Path to the character’s Path |
| Equilibrium Level | Raises difficulty and reward quality | Upgrade your main team before taking the Trial |
| Reserved Trailblaze Power | Stores slower backup energy after cap | Still spend active Trailblaze Power before it caps |
| Event Warps | Limited-time character and Light Cone availability | Read Details and recheck current banners before pulling |
| Endgame Rotations | Change enemy pressure and team needs | Avoid fixed team advice without current-version checks |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not level every character equally - A small finished core clears story and farming more smoothly than a wide roster of underbuilt units.
-
Do not ignore enemy weaknesses - Brute force can work early, but bosses and harder stages punish teams that cannot break Toughness.
-
Do not spend Skill Points with every character every turn - Supports should generate points when their key job is already active.
-
Do not let enemies ambush you repeatedly - Start fights with your own Basic Attack or Technique whenever possible.
-
Do not equip off-Path Light Cones expecting the passive to work - Off-Path cones provide stats, but the ability needs a matching Path.
-
Do not farm relics hard before account materials are handled - Levels, Ascension, Light Cones, and Traces are more reliable early upgrades.
-
Do not rush an Equilibrium Trial with an unprepared team - The better rewards come with stronger enemies.
-
Do not spend Stellar Jade on a permanent banner by habit - Limited Warps rotate, and premium currency should follow a plan.
-
Do not copy old build advice blindly - Relics, characters, modes, and balance-sensitive recommendations can change with live updates.
-
Do not build only one damage type forever - Over time, you need enough element and role coverage for different enemies and modes.
