Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world action game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Its Story Mode follows three criminals, Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips, across Los Santos and Blaine County. It is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and first launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.
Content warning: Grand Theft Auto V is rated M for Mature 17+ (PEGI 18) for blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. This guide keeps discussion non-graphic and focused on play.
Quick answer: Switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor often from the Character Wheel (hold D-pad Down, or Alt on PC), and lean on their special abilities (L3 + R3 on PlayStation, both stick presses on Xbox, Caps Lock on PC). Save in your safehouse bed or from the phone before risky jobs, and lose the police by staying out of their search cones. Do only the first of Lester’s five assassination missions during the story; save the other four for after the final heist, when all three characters have far more money to invest in the stock market.
This guide covers Story Mode; GTA Online has its own guide under Related Guides.
Essential Tips
1. Switch Characters Often
Each protagonist has his own missions, and the wheel tells you who has work.
Hold D-pad Down (Alt on PC) to open the Character Wheel; the number under each character shows his available missions. In free roam you can switch at any time, except while any protagonist has a wanted level, during side missions, and during friendship activities. Inside missions, a slot flashing white means you need to switch to continue; a slot flashing red means that character is in danger and needs help.
Switching away and straight back is also a free way to clean up a damaged car and refill your health.
2. Save Before Anything Risky
Use your own bed or your phone.
Sleep in your character’s own safehouse bed to save. Sleeping moves the clock forward: six hours for Michael, eight for Franklin, and twelve for Trevor. When you are far from home, the phone has a quick save. Saving does not clear a wanted level, so lose the police first or the stars will be waiting when you load.
3. Heal Smart and Buy Armor
Natural healing stops at half.
Health regenerates only up to 50%, and only while you stand still or drive. Taking cover speeds it up slightly; walking or running interrupts it. Safehouses have a first aid kit that restores health. Ammu-Nation sells five tiers of body armor from $500 to $2,500. Armor absorbs gunfire, falls, and impacts, but not melee hits.
4. Know What Failure Costs
Death and arrest are cheap, but not free.
Getting wasted costs 5% of your cash, capped at $5,000, and you keep your weapons. Getting busted costs your ammo and body armor, plus whatever weapon you had drawn at the time. Mission retries start from a checkpoint but can disable some gold-medal objectives.
5. Use the Weapon Wheel as a Slow-Motion Breather
Opening it slows the action down.
Hold LB, L1, or Tab to open the weapon wheel. The game slows while it is open, which buys a moment during firefights and chases. Its eight slots are sorted by weapon type, with handguns at the top and melee at the bottom.
6. Take a Taxi for Long Trips
Fast travel is one phone call away.
Set a waypoint on the map, then call Downtown Cab Co from your phone contacts.
7. Stop for Random Events
They unlock heist crew and count toward 100%.
Random events begin after the Pulling Favors mission. A light blue map dot is friendly, red is hostile, and flashing blue and red means you choose whether to help or hinder. Two events unlock heist crew members, and any 14 count toward 100% completion.
8. Treat Cheats as Sandbox Tools
They are safe for saves, but they switch off achievements.
Cheats can be entered as button combinations, dialed on the phone (PS4 and later, and PC), or typed into the PC console with the ~ key. They disable achievements and trophies for that session only, and they do not block 100% completion or corrupt save files.

Characters and Special Abilities
A yellow meter under the radar shows how much special ability each character has left. Raising the Special skill increases how much charge the meter holds, so the ability lasts longer.
| Character | What his ability does | How to charge it |
|---|---|---|
| Michael | Slows time in gunfights and improves accuracy; works on foot only | Headshots, stealth kills or knockouts, dropping below 25% health, yoga, high-speed driving |
| Franklin | Driving Focus slows time while driving any land vehicle | Drifting, near misses at speed, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving near top speed |
| Trevor | Red Mist deals more damage, takes less, and keeps him alive while active | Killing targets, headshots, high-speed driving, taking damage |
Two practical uses: Franklin can activate his ability and hit the brakes to bring a car to a complete stop, and Trevor can trigger Red Mist just before a high-speed fall to improve his chances of surviving it.
Light story spoiler: late in the story, Franklin is asked to kill one of the other two protagonists. Agreeing removes that character from the Character Wheel for good, so weigh the choice if you want all three available afterward.
Skills and How to Train Them
Every protagonist has eight skills: Special (above) and the seven below. Trevor starts with the highest Flying, Franklin with the highest Driving, and Michael with the highest Shooting.
| Skill | What it improves | How to raise it |
|---|---|---|
| Stamina | How long you can sprint, swim, and cycle; maxed means unlimited | Run, swim, and cycle |
| Shooting | Accuracy, recoil, reload speed, ammo capacity | Land hits and headshots; Shooting Range challenges |
| Strength | Melee damage, ladder climbing, damage resistance | Melee fights and sports |
| Stealth | Quieter, faster movement in stealth mode | Move in stealth mode; silent takedowns |
| Flying | Easier takeoffs and landings, less turbulence | Flight time; Flight School lessons |
| Driving | Air control and easier wheelies | Wheelies and clean landings from big jumps |
| Lung Capacity | Time underwater before losing health | Swim underwater; yoga |
Running yourself to exhaustion drains health, so Stamina pays off early. The Flight School at Los Santos International Airport opens after the Friends Reunited mission and has 12 medal-graded lessons; Michael and Franklin are the ones who need them, since Trevor is already an expert pilot. Shooting Ranges are at the Ammu-Nation stores in Cypress Flats and Pillbox Hill, with a $14 entry fee.
Police and Wanted Levels
Wanted levels run from one to five stars, and every officer has a field of view. To escape, stay out of the search cones long enough for the stars to disappear:
- Read the stars. Flashing stars mean you are out of sight, and slower flashing means you are closer to escaping. If an officer spots you, the timer resets.
- Change your look. Putting on or taking off a mask or sunglasses during the search drops your wanted level by one star.
- Hide. Bushes (your map arrow turns grey when one hides you), trees, and railway tunnels all help, and police will not drive on the tracks. Helicopters can still shoot at you in a bush.
- Duck into Ammu-Nation. The clerk may open fire on pursuing officers, but keep your own weapon holstered or he will treat you as the threat.
- Stay out of restricted areas. Entering Fort Zancudo or Bolingbroke Penitentiary gives you four stars immediately.
- Watch your parked car. If the police catch you near your personal vehicle, it gets impounded.
You cannot switch characters to escape a pursuit; the Character Wheel stays locked until the stars are gone.
Money, Heists, and the Stock Market
Heists
Each major heist lets you pick an approach, such as a quiet roof entry or a loud frontal assault, then hire crew and run setup missions. Experts take a bigger cut; cheaper newcomers may falter, die, or lose part of the take. Crew who survive gain experience but keep the same cut, so a cheap recruit who makes it through becomes better value.
You can unlock four extra crew members:
- Packie McReary (gunman): help him escape a drug store robbery near Franklin’s first safehouse, after Pulling Favors.
- Taliana Martinez (driver): get her medical help after a freeway crash east of Paleto Bay, after Mr. Philips.
- Rickie Lukens (hacker): calls Michael after the Friend Request mission.
- Chef (gunman): contacts Trevor after Blitz Play.
Lester’s Assassinations and Stocks
Lester gives Franklin five assassination missions, marked with a green L on the map. Only the first, The Hotel Assassination, is required for the story. Leave the other four until the story ends: the final heist gives you over $40 million to invest, so the same percentage gain is worth far more.
For The Hotel Assassination itself, the stock to buy is Betta Pharmaceuticals on BAWSAQ. Invest before the mission, then sell after a few in-game hours or one sleep; after roughly 24 in-game hours, the price starts to fall.
There are two exchanges: LCN works without a Rockstar Games Social Club connection and moves with your single-player actions, while BAWSAQ is linked to Social Club and reacts to all players. Before any big investment, make a separate save slot, then sleep to pass time, check the price, and reload if you miss the peak. Prices fluctuate, so watch the real price rather than a fixed target.
Properties
Buying property unlocks after Trevor’s Nervous Ron mission. Businesses pay out every seven days, and ignoring management’s requests for help can lower those payouts. Most pay back slowly: Downtown Cab Co. costs $200,000 and earns $2,000 a week, while Los Santos Customs costs $349,000 for $1,600 a week, though Franklin’s repairs and upgrades there become free. You need five properties for 100% completion, and like every completion task they can wait until after the story.
Versions and Upgrades
- PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: these versions launched on March 15, 2022. Since June 18, 2026, owners of any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version can upgrade for free, and Story Mode progress can be transferred.
- PC: Steam lists GTAV Legacy and GTAV Enhanced. Upgrading to Enhanced is free, and a one-time migration moves your Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters across.
- GTA Online: included with GTA V on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and current-gen consoles, but Rockstar treats it as a separate game. Use the GTA Online guide for that side.
Upgrade offers can change, so confirm eligibility on your platform’s store page before buying.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Doing all of Lester’s assassinations mid-story - You invest a fraction of your eventual money.
- Running while badly hurt - Stand still or take cover so your health can regenerate.
- Quick-saving with a wanted level - The stars come back when you load.
- Trading stocks without a backup save - You can’t reload if you miss the peak.
- Hiring crew on cut alone - Weak crew can falter or die and cost part of the take.
- Wandering into Fort Zancudo or the prison - Both give you four stars on entry.
- Drawing a gun inside Ammu-Nation during a chase - The clerk will turn on you instead of the police.
- Ignoring business management calls - Skipping them can reduce weekly profits.
