Hades II Beginner Tips - Combat, Arcana, Boons, and Resources

Hades II beginner tips for combat, casts, dashes, Magick, Omega moves, Arcana, Boons, Keepsakes, resources, Guardians, and Crossroads progression.

On this page

Hades II, developed and published by Supergiant Games, is a roguelike dungeon crawler about Melinoe fighting beyond the Underworld with weapons, witchcraft, Olympian boons, permanent Crossroads upgrades, and lessons carried forward from failed runs.

Content note: ESRB rates Hades II T for Teen and describes fantasy violence, blood, mild language, alcohol references, suggestive material, implied intimacy, and mature story themes. This guide stays non-graphic and gameplay-focused.

This guide avoids brittle weapon rankings, boon tier lists, boss routes, and exact resource farming paths. Hades II received post-launch patches through at least June 10, 2026, so recheck current-build details before relying on old advice.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Every Failed Run as Progress

The loop is Crossroads setup, run, return, improve, and try again.

You are expected to lose runs while learning enemies, rewards, bosses, and weapons. After returning to the Crossroads, check what new dialogue, recipes, Arcana options, weapon upgrades, keepsakes, and resource spends have opened.

2. Use Casts Before Rooms Get Crowded

Your cast is crowd control, not just damage.

Melinoe’s cast creates a circle that can hold enemies in place. Use it early in a wave to control space, split dangerous groups, and buy time to choose safer attack angles.

3. Separate Evasive Dashes From Attack Dashes

A dash used to survive should stay clean.

Dash gives you a brief evasion window, but attacking, casting, or using a special during that dash can turn it into offense. When a boss pattern is still unfamiliar, dodge first and punish after the danger passes.

4. Spend Magick With a Plan

Omega moves are strong, but they are commitments.

Omega attacks, specials, and casts can reshape a fight, but they consume Magick and often require timing or positioning. Use them when enemies are controlled, recovering, or moving predictably.

5. Build Around the Move You Actually Use

A good boon on the wrong action is still awkward.

If a weapon run is mostly special damage, prioritize boons and hammers that improve that special. If your plan depends on casts, keep investing in cast support instead of grabbing every attractive attack upgrade.

6. Unlock Arcana, Then Raise Grasp

More cards only matter if you can activate them.

Arcana Cards are permanent progression, but active cards are limited by Grasp. Spend Ashes to open useful cards, then spend Psyche to fit more of them into your starting setup.

7. Favor Survival While Learning

Longer attempts teach more than fragile damage spikes.

Early Arcana and keepsake choices that help you survive can be more valuable than pure damage. More time alive means more practice against new enemies, region layouts, and Guardian patterns.

8. Unlock Crossroads Utility Early

The cauldron turns resources into better future runs.

Incantations can add tracking, vendors, gathering, fountains, keepsake access, garden systems, and other long-term conveniences. Recheck the cauldron after story progress, new materials, and character conversations.

9. Gather What the Run Offers

Permanent progress often comes from the room corners.

After clearing a room, take a quick sweep for visible resources before leaving. Reagents support Incantations, weapon upgrades, tool upgrades, and Broker trades, so a small detour now can unblock several later upgrades.

10. Use Keepsakes to Shape a Run

A keepsake is your pre-run intention in item form.

Give Nectar to characters to unlock keepsakes, then equip one that matches your current problem. If a region boss keeps ending the run, a defensive or boss-focused keepsake can be more useful than another economy pick.

11. Spend Gold Before a Guardian When Possible

Gold has no value if you die with it.

Charon’s shops can offer boons and other run help. If a shop appears before a region-ending fight, convert gold into power, healing, or utility before testing the Guardian again.

12. Learn One Weapon at a Time

Nocturnal Arms ask for different spacing and rhythm.

The staff, blades, flames, axe, skull, and coat do not solve rooms the same way. Spend several runs learning one weapon’s safe ranges, strongest move, and Magick use before deciding it is weak.

13. Use God Mode if You Need More Practice Time

God Mode is a built-in learning option.

If the difficulty is stopping you from learning enemy patterns, turn on God Mode and keep playing. The important skill is still reading rooms, choosing upgrades, and improving decisions.

14. Be Suspicious of Old Exact Advice

Hades II changed through Early Access and post-launch patches.

Exact values, best boons, weapon rankings, gathering rules, and boss tuning can age quickly. Use durable fundamentals first, then refresh patch-specific details when you need a build, boss, or farming guide.

Combat Tips

  1. Open with control: Cast before enemies surround you, then attack from a safer angle.
  2. Dodge with intent: Use one dash to avoid the hit, then decide whether the punish is actually safe.
  3. Stop channeling early when needed: An Omega move is not worth finishing if the enemy pattern has already changed.
  4. Watch armor and elites: Tougher enemies can ignore sloppy stagger assumptions.
  5. Use hammers to define the run: A Daedalus Hammer can change how a weapon’s main action works, so adapt your boon priorities afterward.
  6. Save healing windows: Heal after a wave, after a Guardian sequence, or after creating distance, not while an enemy is winding up.
  7. Respect region bosses: Guardians are progress checks; enter with a clear plan for damage, defense, and Magick recovery.

Resource Management

  1. Ashes: Unlock Arcana Cards that support your next few runs.
  2. Psyche: Increase Grasp so more Arcana can be active at the start.
  3. Reagents: Save them for Incantations, weapon upgrades, tool upgrades, and important Broker trades.
  4. Nectar: Give first gifts to unlock keepsakes before spreading gifts randomly.
  5. Bones: Use Broker purchases to clear bottlenecks instead of hoarding without a goal.
  6. Gold: Spend it on useful run power before major fights.
  7. Tool resources: Gather visible materials, but check exact tool behavior in the current patch before planning a farming route.
  8. Time: A short run that brings back one needed material is still progress.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not ignore your cast - Running and attacking alone makes crowded rooms harder than they need to be.

  2. Do not spend all Magick on unsafe channels - Keep enough control to escape when enemy patterns shift.

  3. Do not choose boons for actions you barely use - A focused run is stronger than five unrelated upgrades.

  4. Do not leave rooms immediately after combat - Check for resources, shops, character interactions, and exits before moving on.

  5. Do not hoard gold before a Guardian - Buy useful power before a fight that might end the run.

  6. Do not change weapons every single attempt - Learn one weapon’s spacing before judging its strength.

  7. Do not equip keepsakes at random - Pick one that solves the run’s actual problem.

  8. Do not delay permanent upgrades forever - Arcana, Grasp, Incantations, tools, and weapon upgrades make future attempts smoother.

  9. Do not chase only damage while learning - Survival upgrades create more chances to practice bosses and late regions.

  10. Do not treat a Guardian like a normal room - Slow down, watch patterns, and take fewer greedy hits.
