Half-Life 2: Episode One, developed and published by Valve, is a mature single-player first-person shooter about escaping City 17 with Alyx Vance after the events of Half-Life 2. The campaign leans on Gravity Gun problem solving, companion combat, dark tunnel pressure, antlion containment, citizen escorts, and heavy-target fights.
Content warning: Half-Life 2: Episode One is rated mature, with violence noted by Steam.
This guide covers beginner combat, physics, Alyx cooperation, and first-clear habits. It does not include a full chapter walkthrough, exact achievement route, The One Free Bullet route, or current Steam integration details until they match your version.
A note on difficulty: this guide is beginner-focused, but Episode One can punish sloppy play on Hard mode, especially when Alyx is exposed or enemies overrun escort spaces.
Essential Tips
1. Check for the Gravity Gun Answer First
Episode One often gives you an object before it gives you a clean shot.
Before spending ammo, scan for cars, blocks, loose panels, barrels, Hoppers, Roller Mines, energy balls, and vents. If a fight or puzzle feels awkward, the missing answer may be something you can pull, punt, carry, shield with, or throw.
2. Treat Alyx Like Part of the Combat Plan
Alyx is useful, but she still needs space and sightlines.
Keep enemies where Alyx can see them, avoid blocking her line of fire, and protect her on harder settings. In dark areas, your flashlight can decide what she can target, so point it at the threat you want removed.
3. Save Before Physics Rooms and Escorts
The current Steam listing supports Save Anytime.
Make a manual save before large Citadel machinery, energy-ball puzzles, dark tunnel pushes, antlion rooms, escort loops, and the final heavy-target sequence. A quick save gives you room to learn without replaying extra travel.
4. Respect the Reconfigured Gravity Gun
Early Citadel sections briefly change what the Gravity Gun can do.
When the Gravity Gun is powered up, use it aggressively on Combine soldiers and moving hazards. When it returns to normal, shift back to using it as a utility tool, not a replacement for every weapon.
5. Use Alyx’s Flashlight Targeting in the Dark
Dark tunnel fights are not only about what you can see.
If Alyx is with you and the room is dark, keep the flashlight on active enemies instead of sweeping randomly. Her support becomes more reliable when she can clearly see the target.
6. Fight Zombines From Outside Grab Range
Zombines can turn a close fight into an explosive rush.
Back up when they start closing distance, use cars or props to slow them, and listen for grenade pressure. If one commits to a rush, make space first and finish it before it reaches the group.
7. Plug Antlion Pits Quickly
An open pit can turn one fight into a long drain on ammo and health.
Look for cars or other large objects near antlion spawn points. Blocking the pit is usually better than trying to kill every antlion as it appears.
8. Pull Hoppers Before Walking Through Them
A Hopper is a threat until you own it.
Use the Gravity Gun to pull Hoppers from the ground, then plant or throw them where they help you. Do not step through a mined space just because the path looks clear.
9. Keep Heavy Weapons for Heavy Targets
The RPG matters late.
Use normal weapons, physics objects, and explosives for regular pressure, but keep RPG ammo in mind for snipers, armored vehicles, and the final Strider fight. Running dry before a scripted heavy target makes the endgame messier.
10. Stage Supplies During the First Escort Pass
Exit 17 is easier when the area is prepared before pressure ramps up.
When the first escort movement is quiet, gather health, ammo, barrels, Hoppers, and rockets into convenient places. Later waves become easier when you are not searching for supplies under fire.
11. Save Challenge Runs for Later
The One Free Bullet and other achievements change how you play.
Finish the campaign normally first. Challenge routes are more fun when you already know the chapters, escort rhythm, weapon pickups, and where the campaign expects physics solutions.
Combat and Physics Tips
- Carry a useful object into uncertain rooms: A barrel, panel, or crate can become cover, a projectile, or a shield.
- Use cars as antlion tools: Nearby cars often exist because the game wants you to move them.
- Let Alyx clean up stunned enemies: Knock antlions or smaller threats off balance, then keep the flashlight and sightline clear.
- Grab Manhacks instead of tracking them with bullets: Pull one in with the Gravity Gun and throw it into a wall, the floor, or another enemy.
- Do not duel turrets in open sightlines: Use explosives, thrown objects, angles, or power sources before standing in their lane.
- Use reprogrammed Roller Mines quickly: They can help clear a room, but do not stand around waiting beside unstable objects.
- Break enemy groups before escorting citizens: Clear the next lane before bringing vulnerable allies through it.
Resource Management
- Health: Restock before leaving safe corners, especially before dark tunnels, antlion rooms, escorts, and heavy-target fights.
- Ammo: Let physics objects handle weak or grouped enemies when the room gives you tools.
- Explosives: Save some for turrets, clustered enemies, armored vehicles, and the final Strider pressure.
- Flashlight: Use it deliberately in dark fights so Alyx can support you instead of firing late.
- Manual saves: Save before puzzles, escorts, and scripted arenas where one bad position can snowball.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Does | How to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Gravity Gun utility | Turns world objects into tools, shields, and weapons | Pull, punt, carry, block, and throw before spending ammo |
| Reconfigured Gravity Gun | Temporarily makes Gravity Gun attacks lethal in early Citadel sections | Use it to clear Combine soldiers and hazards fast |
| Alyx sightlines | Controls when Alyx can help in dark or blocked spaces | Keep enemies lit and visible instead of fighting alone |
| Antlion pit plugging | Stops repeated antlion pressure from a spawn point | Push cars or large objects into open pits |
| Hopper handling | Lets you convert mines into your own explosives | Pull them up with the Gravity Gun, then plant or throw them |
| Roller Mine reprogramming | Lets Alyx turn a hostile tool into temporary help | Carry one to Alyx, then toss it into the problem room |
| Escort staging | Lets you prepare Exit 17 before the pressure rises | Move supplies and explosives during quiet passes |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not ignore loose objects - The room often gives you a safer answer than bullets.
- Do not point the flashlight away from Alyx’s target - In dark spaces, she needs visibility to help.
- Do not fight Zombines at point-blank range - Their grenade rush can punish slow backing up.
- Do not leave antlion pits open - Plugging the source is better than spending ammo forever.
- Do not walk over Hoppers casually - Pull them up and reuse them before they explode near you.
- Do not waste RPG shots before heavy targets - Armored vehicles and the final Strider need reliable damage.
- Do not drag citizens through uncleared lanes - Clear the path first, then move the group.
- Do not start The One Free Bullet on a blind first playthrough - Learn the campaign before limiting your weapons.
