Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a remaster of the original Halo campaign, with Anniversary presentation layered over the preserved Halo: Combat Evolved campaign gameplay. The best beginner habit is to treat every fight as a resource problem: shield first, health second, then weapon role, enemy type, grenade risk, checkpoint position, and whether you are chasing optional Anniversary extras.
Content warning: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is rated M for Mature 17+ by ESRB with Blood and Gore and Violence. This guide keeps descriptions non-graphic and focused on play.
This is a beginner campaign fundamentals guide for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. It covers campaign combat, weapons, shields, checkpoints, vehicles, skulls, and terminals at a safe first-run level. It is not a full mission walkthrough, skull/terminal location route, achievement route, Legendary/LASO guide, speedrun guide, or current MCC multiplayer guide.
Version caveat: current PC storefronts sell Anniversary in a Halo: The Master Chief Collection context, while the 2011 Xbox 360 Anniversary release has some different feature behavior. MCC/current PC details below are marked as platform caveats.
Essential Tips
1. Let Shields Recharge Before Health Gets Expensive
Your shield is renewable; your health is the resource you protect.
When the shield breaks, stop trading shots and leave the enemy’s line of fire. Wait for the shield to come back before peeking again, especially in long corridors and open Covenant fights. If you keep shooting through a broken shield, you turn a recoverable mistake into health damage that may require a health pack later.
2. Keep One Accurate Weapon
The pistol is a primary tool, not just a backup.
Anniversary preserves the original campaign sandbox, and the M6D pistol remains one of the safest beginner weapons because it is accurate, has zoom, and rewards headshots after shields are down. Pair it with a weapon that solves a different problem, such as plasma for shields, shotgun for close Flood fights, or rockets for vehicles and heavy targets.
3. Use Plasma to Open Shields
Plasma weapons make shielded enemies easier to finish.
The plasma pistol charged shot is valuable against Elite and Jackal shields. Plan the follow-up before you fire it: overcharge, hit the shield, then swap to the pistol, shotgun, or another finisher instead of standing in the open draining the whole battery.
4. Burst the Assault Rifle
Automatic fire is safest at close range.
The assault rifle is useful against weak enemies, close skirmishes, and Flood swarms, but it loses value when you hold the trigger at distant targets. Fire short bursts when you must stretch its range, and reload after fights instead of walking into the next room with a half-empty magazine.
5. Save Shotgun Shells for Flood That Deserve Them
Tiny swarms should not drain your best close-range answer.
The shotgun is especially useful once Flood combat forms start rushing you, but ammunition still matters. Use efficient tools on fragile infection forms when you can, then save shotgun shells for combat forms, carrier forms at safe distance, or cramped rooms where stopping power matters.
6. Change Tactics When the Enemy Faction Changes
Covenant, Flood, and Sentinels punish one loadout.
Covenant fights often reward shield stripping and accurate follow-up shots. Flood fights reward space, reload discipline, and close-range stopping power. Sentinel fights are easier when you have Covenant weapons, especially plasma options. Swap weapons from the ground when the campaign changes the problem in front of you.
7. Treat Vehicles as Momentum, Not Armor
A Warthog or Scorpion helps only while you control the space around it.
Vehicles let you cross open ground, pressure groups, and move faster, but vehicle contact is dangerous for infantry and cramped areas can trap you. Drive with an exit route, avoid pinning yourself against terrain, and do not let a vehicle make you careless around Hunters, explosives, or tight indoor entrances.
8. Use the Graphics Toggle for Readability and Extras
Anniversary visuals are required for some collectibles, but combat still follows original rules.
You can toggle between Anniversary graphics and the original campaign graphics. Use whichever view makes enemies, cover, and routes easier for you to read. If you are looking for Anniversary skulls or terminals, switch to Anniversary graphics because those extras are not visible or accessible in Classic mode.
9. Let Checkpoints Reset Your Plan
A checkpoint is a moment to check health, ammo, and position.
When you restart from a checkpoint, do not immediately repeat the same push. Look at your shield state, health, weapon ammo, grenade type, and nearby pickups before moving. If the checkpoint saved you in a weak spot, slow the fight down and create cover before chasing a kill.
10. Leave Challenge Modifiers for Later
Skulls can change the run, so learn the campaign first.
Skulls are gameplay modifiers. On a first clear, keep the run simple unless you already know what a skull does. If you are playing in MCC, all Anniversary skulls are available by default and reappear on replay; in the original Anniversary release, skulls must be found and unlocked in campaign. Treat that as a version difference, not a combat rule.
Weapons and Enemy Matchups
| Threat | Beginner Response | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Grunts | Use pistol, short rifle bursts, melee only when safe | Saves stronger ammo for shielded targets |
| Elites | Strip shields with plasma, then finish fast | Real damage starts after the shield drops |
| Jackals | Open the shield with plasma, melee, or an exposed-hand shot | Shooting the shield head-on wastes time |
| Hunters | Move for orange weak-spot angles | Armor absorbs bad shots |
| Flood infection forms | Use efficient swarm control | Preserves shotgun shells |
| Flood combat forms | Keep space and use shotgun or other close stopping power | Melee trades and reload panic are risky |
| Flood carrier forms | Shoot from distance | Close explosions can punish greedy pushes |
| Sentinels | Use Covenant weapons when available | Plasma options clear them quickly |
| Vehicles and turrets | Keep distance, angles, and escape room | Contact and explosives punish bad positioning |
Checkpoints, Skulls, and Terminals
Checkpoints are useful, but their exact triggers vary by mission. After a respawn or checkpoint restart, pause before repeating the same route. Reload, scavenge nearby weapons, check your grenade type, and recover shields before starting the next exchange.
Skulls are optional gameplay modifiers. In the original Anniversary release, most skulls are hidden in campaign and must be found before use. In MCC, Anniversary skulls are unlocked by default and reappear on mission replay. In both contexts, use Anniversary graphics when looking for them because they do not appear in Classic mode.
Terminals are optional story collectibles, one per campaign level. They can be accessed on any difficulty and in co-op, but they also require Anniversary graphics rather than Classic mode. Platform caveat: Halo Support documents a current MCC issue where terminals can become inaccessible after respawning, restarting a checkpoint, or playing missions consecutively; the official workaround is to save and quit, quit MCC, relaunch, and resume. For LASO runs, Halo Support recommends skipping terminals entirely.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not keep firing after your shield breaks - Break line of sight and recharge before health damage snowballs.
-
Do not grab every health pack immediately - You may need it more after the next shield break.
-
Do not carry two short-range weapons through open fights - Keep at least one accurate option when the level gives you one.
-
Do not hold the pistol trigger down at important targets - Controlled shots keep the weapon accurate.
-
Do not dump bullets into Jackal shields - Open the shield first, then finish the target.
-
Do not stand in front of Hunters waiting for a perfect shot - Move, bait, or flank for the exposed weak spot.
-
Do not spend shotgun shells on every infection form - Save close-range power for tougher Flood threats.
-
Do not chase carrier forms up close - Shoot them before they reach you.
-
Do not drive vehicles into cramped corners - Leave room to turn, reverse, or bail out.
-
Do not search for skulls or terminals in Classic mode - Switch to Anniversary graphics before collectible hunting.
