Helldivers 2 Beginner Tips - Stratagems, Samples, and Squad Survival

Helldivers 2 beginner tips for stratagems, friendly fire, samples, Warbonds, currencies, extraction, crossplay, and live-service patch caveats.

On this page

Helldivers 2 is a co-op third-person shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios AB and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Publishing LLC, depending on storefront metadata. The loop is simple to understand and punishing to master: drop into a hostile war zone, complete objectives, use stratagems, recover resources, and extract before the squad collapses.

Content warning: Helldivers 2 is rated M 17+ in the official storefront metadata for Blood and Gore and Intense Violence, with in-game purchases and user interaction labels. This guide keeps combat descriptions non-graphic.

This guide is for new and returning players learning the current fundamentals. It is not a weapon tier list, Warbond buying guide, faction counter sheet, Major Order tracker, or high-difficulty meta build. Balance, Warbond, enemy, Galactic War, crossplay, platform, and account-linking details can change, so recheck them before relying on old advice.

Patch note: This guide is scoped to Arrowhead’s Machinery of Oppression 6.3.0 era. Recheck loadouts and enemy advice after major updates, hotfixes, new Warbonds, enemy changes, platform changes, and account-system changes.

Essential Tips

1. Pick a Difficulty You Can Finish

Rewards only matter if the squad completes the operation.

Helldivers 2 tempts new players to climb risk levels quickly, but a clean lower-risk operation teaches more than repeated wipes. Move up when your squad can complete objectives, recover samples, and extract without burning through every reinforcement by accident.

2. Choose a Job Before You Drop

A loadout should solve mission problems, not just look powerful.

Before launch, decide what your kit covers: crowd control, armored targets, defense, support, mobility, or objective pressure. A squad with four similar explosion tools can still fail if nobody brought ammo support, anti-armor, or something safe for close objectives.

3. Use Stratagems Early Enough to Matter

Cooldowns are resources, not trophies.

Stratagems are a central part of Helldivers 2, from Eagle and Orbital attacks to backpacks, support weapons, defensive tools, and vehicles. Call them before the fight is out of control, and leave yourself enough space that the beacon does not turn into a team kill.

4. Warn the Squad Before Big Ordnance

Friendly fire is always part of the game.

Strikes, turrets, mines, explosives, support weapons, and even panicked primary fire can remove allies as easily as enemies. Ping, call out, or clearly throw away from the squad before using anything with a wide danger area.

5. Stop Reloading Half-Full Magazines

Ammo discipline keeps long fights stable.

Helldivers 2 can discard the remaining rounds in a magazine when you reload. Break the shooter habit of topping off after every short burst. Reload when it is tactically safe, when the magazine is nearly empty, or when the next fight demands a full mag.

6. Crouch or Go Prone When Accuracy Matters

Standing and spraying is not the answer to every wave.

Movement affects accuracy, and some weapons become easier to manage when you slow down, crouch, or go prone. Use movement to survive, then briefly stabilize when a precise shot, weak-point hit, or controlled burst matters.

7. Do Objectives Before Fighting the Whole Planet

Enemy kills are a means, not the mission.

Clear what blocks the objective, but do not turn every patrol into a full engagement. Finish primary tasks, take useful side objectives, collect resources you can actually extract, and leave before the map becomes a supply drain.

8. Search, But Do Not Get Greedy

Loot is valuable only if it gets back to the shuttle.

Battlefields can hold ammo, Medals, Samples, and other useful finds. Check points of interest when the route is safe, but do not spend ten minutes chasing scraps after the squad is low on supplies, reinforcements, and time.

9. Recover Dropped Samples After Death

Samples are a squad responsibility.

When a Helldiver dies, dropped gear and samples can remain on the ground. If the route is survivable, recover them before extraction. Leaving samples behind slows ship-module progress for everyone.

10. Extract Like It Is an Objective

The final minute is not downtime.

Reload, resupply, place defensive stratagems carefully, and watch angles before calling or boarding extraction. A sloppy extraction can waste a strong mission, especially if samples are on the ground or allies are still returning to the landing zone.

11. Spend Currencies With a Plan

Each resource has a different job.

Use Requisitions for new stratagem access, Samples for ship and stratagem upgrades, War Medals for Warbond pages, and Super Credits for Warbonds or store items. Do not treat all currencies like one shared wallet.

12. Treat Meta Advice as Temporary

Patches change the shape of the arsenal.

Arrowhead’s current patch notes include weapon, stratagem, enemy, vehicle, reload, and Galactic Campaign changes. Use broad fundamentals here, but recheck any exact best-weapon, best-stratagem, Warbond, enemy, or high-difficulty recommendation after updates.

Loadout and Stratagem Habits

  1. Cover armor and crowds: Bring at least one plan for swarms and one plan for armored or priority targets.
  2. Mind the mission type: A defensive hold, roaming objective, and extraction-heavy run do not need the same tools.
  3. Avoid four selfish picks: One support backpack, resupply habit, defensive pick, or utility tool can save more runs than another red beacon.
  4. Respect Eagle and Orbital timing: Some strikes arrive fast; some need setup. Throw beacons where enemies will be, not where they were.
  5. Place sentries with lanes: Turrets need clear fire lines and enough distance that they do not shred teammates crossing the objective.
  6. Bring a support weapon you understand: If a weapon needs lock-on, a backpack, setup time, or recoil control, learn that before relying on it in a crisis.
  7. Check armor passives: Armor is not only fashion. Passives and mobility can change whether you survive mistakes, carry utility, or stay ahead of enemies.
  8. Rebuild after patches: If an update changes damage, armor penetration, cooldowns, enemy behavior, or reload feel, test your loadout again instead of assuming it still works.

Progression and Currencies

  1. Requisitions: Spend these on stratagems through Ship Management so your squad has more mission answers.
  2. Samples: Extract with them and invest in ship/stratagem upgrades. Common, rare, and super rare sample needs should be checked in-client before planning exact upgrades.
  3. War Medals: Use Medals to work through Warbond pages. You do not need to finish every page in one sitting.
  4. Super Credits: These can be bought or found in gameplay and are used for Warbonds or store items. Check current prices before relying on buying advice.
  5. Free Warbond Progress: The standard Helldivers Mobilize Warbond is available from the beginning, so learn the base kit before assuming a premium catalog is required.
  6. Premium and Legendary Warbonds: Premium Warbonds and Legendary Warbonds have different costs and token rules. Confirm current availability and pricing before spending.
  7. Squad Loot Etiquette: Shared samples and currency mean collecting resources helps the team; do not fight teammates for pickups.
  8. Patch-Aware Spending: If a Warbond weapon or stratagem is drawing balance attention, wait for current patch notes before spending just because an old guide says it is mandatory.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not throw orbital or Eagle strikes at your squad’s feet - A good stratagem clears enemies while leaving allies alive to finish the objective.

  2. Do not reload after every tiny burst - Wasting half magazines makes long fights and extraction holds harder.

  3. Do not fight every patrol on the way to the objective - Unnecessary fights burn time, supplies, and reinforcements.

  4. Do not leave samples on a corpse near extraction - Recovering dropped samples can be the difference between real progress and an empty victory screen.

  5. Do not call extraction while teammates are still committed elsewhere - Start the final hold when the squad is ready to leave.

  6. Do not bring four versions of the same job - A squad needs crowd control, armor answers, support, and objective safety, not only explosions.

  7. Do not stand in front of sentries and mines - Defensive stratagems need safe lanes and clear squad movement.

  8. Do not spend Super Credits only because a weapon is popular this week - Warbond and balance advice can age quickly in a live-service game.

  9. Do not ignore platform/account details before changing systems - Crossplay is available, but current official support says cross-progression is not.

  10. Do not treat old meta advice as current - Weapon, stratagem, enemy, and Galactic War details can change after patches.
