Heroes of Might and Magic III Tips - Heroes, Towns, and Early Weeks

Beginner Heroes of Might and Magic III tips for heroes, towns, mines, early weeks, movement, neutral fights, spells, and version scope.

On this page

Heroes of Might and Magic III, originally released as The Restoration of Erathia by New World Computing and published by The 3DO Company, is a turn-based strategy game about hiring heroes, building towns, recruiting armies, claiming mines, and winning tactical battles across an adventure map.

This guide focuses on base Heroes III fundamentals that also help returning players understand HD Edition and Complete discussions. It does not cover exact campaign routes, town build orders, faction rankings, HD Mod balance, or Horn of the Abyss meta.

Essential Tips

1. Treat the First Two Weeks as the Real Opening

Early map control matters more than a perfect army in town.

The opening is when nearby mines, loose resources, creature dwellings, and neutral guards decide your pace. Clear fights you can win without heavy losses, flag key mines, and keep the main hero moving toward objectives that improve your next few days.

2. Hire Support Heroes for Map Work

Your best fighter should not spend every turn doing errands.

Use the main hero for important fights and experience. Use secondary heroes to pick up loose resources, flag safe mines, reveal roads, ferry fresh troops, visit map bonuses, and sit in garrisons when a town needs protection.

3. Claim Wood and Ore Before Fancy Plans

Most town growth begins with basic materials.

Gold pays wages, but early buildings can stall on wood and ore. If a Lumber Mill or Ore Pit is reachable, make it an early priority. If it is guarded too heavily, gather loose resources and build enough army to take it cheaply.

4. Build for the Map, Not a Script

A boxed-in start and an open start want different towns.

If neutral stacks block every road, early creature dwellings and upgrades can matter more than rushing income. If the area is open and enemies are distant, stronger town economy may pay off. Keep exact build orders version- and map-specific until they match your version.

5. Respect Weekly Creature Growth

New recruits appear on a rhythm.

Town creature dwellings produce on the first day of each week. Before week rollover, decide whether a dwelling, upgrade, castle improvement, mage guild, or income building helps most. After rollover, recruit what matters and move troops toward the hero who can use them.

6. Protect Daily Movement

Movement points are a resource.

Heroes reveal the map and act within daily movement limits. Rough terrain and slow army stacks can reduce travel, while roads and faster stacks can improve it. Leave short errands to support heroes so the main hero keeps advancing.

7. Check What a Neutral Fight Unlocks

Not every guard is worth the losses.

Neutral creatures often protect mines, artifacts, resources, dwellings, and passages. Ask what you get for the fight before entering. A costly battle for a critical mine can be correct; the same losses for a small loose pile may delay the real objective.

8. Use Manual Combat for Important Battles

Preserved creatures are future damage.

Combat is round-based, with stacks acting by speed. Use Wait and Defend to control contact, keep ranged stacks protected, combine identical creatures when appropriate, and spend the hero’s spell turn on the problem that matters now.

9. Buy Spellbooks and Visit Mage Guilds

Might heroes still benefit from magic.

Heroes need spellbooks to record spells. Mage guilds and other spell sources can give movement, scouting, buffs, debuffs, and combat tools. Even simple spells can preserve more army value than another small stack if used at the right moment.

10. Watch Morale When Mixing Armies

More creatures are not always cleaner turns.

Mixed town alignments can lower morale. Sometimes emergency numbers are worth the penalty, but do not pour every captured or recruited stack into the main army without checking whether morale is getting worse.

11. Garrison Towns You Cannot Afford to Lose

An empty town invites a cheap recapture.

A garrisoned hero can lead a town’s defending troops. Leave enough defense behind captured or important towns to stop weak enemy heroes from cutting off income while your main hero pushes forward.

12. Keep Edition Boundaries Clear

Heroes III advice often assumes a specific version.

Base Restoration of Erathia, HD Edition, Complete, HD Mod, and Horn of the Abyss do not share every content or balance assumption. Base Heroes III has eight towns; Armageddon’s Blade adds Conflux; Complete bundles the original and both official expansions; Horn of the Abyss is a fan expansion with its own content and installation requirements.

Opening Priorities

ResourcesClaim mines and nearby loose materialsTown growth depends on steady income
HeroesAdd support heroes when you can afford themScouting and ferrying should not stop the main fighter
ArmyClear guards that unlock real valueNeutral losses must buy map progress
TownChoose dwellings, income, upgrades, or mage guild by needThe map decides the best first investment
MovementKeep slow chores off key heroesMore tiles revealed means more choices
Week rolloverRecruit and transfer troops promptlyGrowth matters only if it reaches the front

Combat Habits

  1. Preview the reward before committing: Fight for mines, towns, artifacts, dwellings, or passages, not just because a stack is nearby.
  2. Use Wait and Defend: Let slow enemies waste turns crossing the field when that gives your ranged or faster stacks better attacks.
  3. Protect shooters and fragile stacks: Body-block, tie up enemy ranged units, or use spells before fragile damage dealers vanish.
  4. Focus important threats: Removing one dangerous stack is often better than spreading damage across several enemies.
  5. Cast with a purpose: A buff, debuff, movement spell, control spell, or damage spell should solve the current fight.
  6. Avoid auto-combat in close battles: Manual control is how you preserve creatures for the next objective.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Waiting in town for a perfect army - The map economy grows for whoever claims it first.

  2. Making one hero do every job - Fighting, scouting, gathering, ferrying, and garrison duty need different assignments.

  3. Ignoring wood and ore - Town plans collapse quickly when basic building materials run out.

  4. Taking every neutral fight immediately - Some guards cost more army than their reward is worth.

  5. Forgetting weekly growth - Creature dwellings and recruitment are strongest when timed around the first day of the week.

  6. Dragging slow creatures across long routes - Slow stacks can reduce how far a hero travels.

  7. Mixing every captured stack into the main army - Lower morale can steal turns in fights you expected to win cleanly.

  8. Skipping spellbooks and mage guild visits - Spells can save troops, reveal options, and change close battles.

  9. Leaving towns undefended - A weak enemy hero can undo several turns of expansion.

  10. Copying expansion advice blindly - Complete, HD Mod, Horn of the Abyss, and base Heroes III can require different assumptions.
