Heroes of the Storm, developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, is a team MOBA built around Blizzard crossover heroes, shared team levels, reactive talents, and battleground-specific objectives. The official roster lists 90 heroes, but this guide avoids tier lists and exact talent builds because hero balance and ranked/map rules are still patch-sensitive.
Content warning: ESRB rates Heroes of the Storm T for Teen with Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, and Mild Suggestive Themes. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.
This guide is for first VS. A.I., Quick Match, ARAM, and early Storm League preparation. It follows current live notes that removed Unranked Mode, and treats the June 29, 2026 PTR notes as pending until a later live patch confirms or changes them.
Essential Tips
1. Start in VS. A.I. Before Full PvP Pressure
Learn your buttons before learning every matchup.
VS. A.I. lets you choose a hero, set the difficulty, and practice movement, ability ranges, mounts, hearthstone returns, map travel, and objective flow without turning every mistake into a PvP draft problem. Use it to understand what your hero actually does, then move into Quick Match when you can play the basic kit without staring at tooltips.
2. Pick a Role, Not Just a Favorite Character
A good team needs jobs covered.
Heroes are grouped into Tanks, Bruisers, Healers, Supports, Melee Assassins, and Ranged Assassins. A Tank protects and starts fights, a Healer keeps allies alive, Assassins provide damage, Bruisers bring durability and pressure, and Supports add utility. Quick Match can create imperfect compositions, so knowing what job your hero can and cannot cover matters.
3. Cover Lanes Early
Shared XP means one missed lane hurts everyone.
Heroes of the Storm uses team-wide experience. One player soaking a lane can help the whole team level, and empty lanes can leave your team behind before the first major objective. Early on, make sure lanes are covered instead of sending every player to brawl mid for no reason.
4. Watch Talent Tiers Like Objectives
Levels 10 and 20 can change the whole fight.
Talents arrive at key levels, with level 10 unlocking heroic abilities and level 20 bringing the final major power spike. Avoid forcing a fair-looking fight when the enemy has a talent tier and your team does not. Soak safely, clear pressure, and wait for the tier to even out unless the map state demands a desperate contest.
5. Build Talents Reactively
The right talent depends on the battleground and both teams.
Do not copy an old build blindly. Ask what the match needs: survival, wave clear, crowd control, burst damage, healing, utility, or objective control. A talent that is strong on one map or into one enemy composition can be weaker when the battleground objective or teamfight shape changes.
6. Use Your Mount Constantly
Map time is real power.
Mounting with Z speeds up rotations, objective arrivals, lane swaps, and retreats. If you walk slowly between lanes while the enemy mounts, you may arrive too late to soak, defend, or join the fight.
7. Learn Each Battleground’s Objective
There is no single map script.
Some maps ask you to capture shrines or altars, escort payloads, collect gems or skulls, hold beacons, fight immortals, or launch warheads. Before the objective activates, look at where your lanes are, whether your team has the talent tier, and whether a camp or pushed wave can force the enemy to split.
8. Time Mercenary Camps With a Purpose
A camp is strongest when it asks the enemy an awkward question.
Mercenary camps can pressure a lane while an objective is spawning, but they are not finished when the neutral units die. You still need to stand on the beacon, and enemies can steal careless camps. Start camps when your team can finish and use the pressure, not just because the camp icon is available.
9. Group for Teamfights
Heroes is not won by five separate duels.
When a real objective or late-game fight starts, be ready to group and use abilities together. A Tank engage without damage, a damage dealer with no healer nearby, or a support isolated in a side lane can turn a winnable fight into a staggered loss.
10. Treat Quick Match as Practice, Not Perfect Drafting
Guaranteed hero choice comes with composition tradeoffs.
Quick Match lets you pre-pick your hero, which is useful for learning, but it can create uneven-feeling team shapes. If you want to prepare for Storm League, learn more than one role and pay attention to what your team is missing instead of assuming every Quick Match will provide a standard tank-healer-damage setup.
11. Wait on Storm League Until You Understand Drafts
Ranked asks for more than one comfortable hero.
Storm League uses ranked tiers, placement matches, rank points, and a draft with bans and picks. Do not queue just because the button is unlocked. Learn several heroes, know basic role coverage, and understand why the battleground changes draft priorities.
12. Recheck Patch-Sensitive Advice
Hero builds, ranked rules, and map pools can change.
Recent live balance notes and newer PTR notes include hero, talent, mode, ranked, and map changes. Before trusting an exact build, tier list, map pool, or ranked rule, check the current live patch notes and the in-client queue screen.
Role Priorities
| Role | Beginner Job | Early Habit |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Start and control fights while protecting fragile allies | Stand where allies can follow up, not alone in fog |
| Bruiser | Hold space, pressure side lanes, and survive longer trades | Soak lanes and join fights before objectives |
| Healer | Keep teammates alive and reduce incoming damage pressure | Track ally positioning before committing cooldowns |
| Support | Add shields, buffs, utility, vision, or special team tools | Play around your team’s plan, not solo duels |
| Ranged Assassin | Deal damage from safer positions | Hit safely and help clear waves before objectives |
| Melee Assassin | Threaten close-range kills and flanks | Wait for setup instead of diving first |
Match Habits
- Check lanes before fighting: If a lane is empty early, someone should collect that XP unless an objective or kill is more valuable.
- Look at the level bar before objectives: A team that reaches level 10 or 20 first can punish a careless contest.
- Mount before rotations: Use travel time well so objectives and defenses do not start without you.
- Clear waves when safe: Pushed lanes create structure pressure and make objectives easier to play around.
- Take camps with nearby allies: A stolen camp gives the enemy pressure from your work.
- Back up after winning a fight: Convert the win into structures, an objective, a camp, or safe map control instead of chasing endlessly.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Shared XP | One hero’s lane soak helps the whole team | Keep lanes covered, especially before level 10 |
| Talent tiers | Certain levels unlock major power jumps | Avoid fighting down a tier unless forced |
| Heroics | Level 10 adds major fight-defining abilities | Reassess fights immediately when either team hits 10 |
| Mounts | Faster rotations and objective arrivals | Press Z whenever travel time matters and you are safe |
| Camp beacons | Camps can be stolen after neutral units die | Stand on the beacon and watch for enemy collapse |
| Quick Match MMR | Quick Match has its own matchmaking context | Use it for hero practice, not proof a draft is ranked-ready |
| PTR notes | Public-test changes may not be live yet | Do not base live builds on PTR changes until confirmed |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not five-man brawl mid while lanes are empty - Your team can fall behind in shared XP before objectives matter.
-
Do not fight down a talent tier by habit - Level 10 and level 20 disadvantages can decide teamfights before they begin.
-
Do not pick talents before reading the match - Enemy heroes, allied heroes, and the battleground should affect your choices.
-
Do not ignore your mount - Slow rotations lose soak, objectives, and saves.
-
Do not start camps when enemies can steal them - Clear the camp only when your team can capture and use it.
-
Do not chase kills away from the objective - Map pressure, structures, and objective control usually matter more than one extra takedown attempt.
-
Do not treat Quick Match compositions as guaranteed ranked drafts - Quick Match preserves hero choice, so team shapes can be unusual.
-
Do not trust old builds after a live or PTR patch - Balance changes can alter heroics, talents, map pools, and ranked rules.
