Hexcells Plus is the sharper second entry in Matthew Brown’s minimalist logic puzzle series. It keeps the calm board, orange hexes, blue marks, black eliminations, and line totals, but expects you to understand the first game’s language almost immediately. The result is a game about proving each move before your cursor touches the board.

Treat every puzzle as a clean deduction problem. If a cell is probably blue, it is not ready. If a cell is probably safe to clear, it is not ready either. The core skill is building a chain of certainty from local counts, line totals, clue notation, question marks, and numbered blue overlays.

Essential Tips

1. Start With the Original Rules in Mind

Hexcells Plus does not spend long reteaching the basics. You still mark cells that must be blue and clear cells that cannot be blue, but the sequel expects you to combine those actions with line clues and advanced notation quickly. If you are coming in cold, spend the first world moving slowly and naming what every symbol means before making a move.

The clean habit is simple: every click should answer a clue. A numbered black cell can prove nearby blues or prove nearby clears. A line total can force every remaining candidate in that line or erase the surplus once the quota is already met. A bracketed or hyphenated number can rule out cells based on shape, not just count.

2. Clear Easy Certainties Before Looking for Tricks

When a puzzle opens, resist the urge to solve the hardest-looking cluster first. Sweep the board for certainties. If a clue already has all the blue cells it needs, clear the rest of its candidates. If a clue’s remaining unknown cells exactly match the number it still needs, mark them all.

This first pass matters because Hexcells Plus often hides the real deduction behind clutter. One cleared hex can reveal a local number, one marked blue can complete a row, and one completed row can erase candidates around a question mark. Reduce every obvious clue before chasing deeper logic.

3. Use Line Headers as Active Tools

Line totals are not decorations. They count blue cells across rows, columns, and diagonals, and they often connect pieces of the board that your eye treats as separate. Highlight a line whenever you are unsure which hexes belong to it. A visual gap can make a line feel broken even when the clue still covers a meaningful set of candidates.

Work line clues in both directions. If the line needs two more blues and has exactly two unknown candidates, both are forced. If it already has the required blue cells, clear the rest. If it still has several options, compare local numbers touching the same cells.

Dim completed headers only after you are certain. Dimming is useful for visual calm, but premature dimming hides information you may need later.

4. Read Brackets and Hyphens as Shape Constraints

A plain number tells you how many blue cells are involved. Brackets and hyphens tell you how those cells can sit together. Bracketed clues require the relevant blue cells to be connected as a group. Hyphenated clues require them to be separated, so adjacent candidates can become impossible.

Do not treat these symbols as flavor text. If a bracketed two can only fit in one neighboring pair, that pair is forced. If a cell would split a bracketed group into islands, it is wrong. If a hyphenated clue already has one confirmed blue, adjacent candidates may need clearing.

Shape rules are especially strong when combined with line totals. A row that needs a connected group can eliminate scattered candidates even before local numbers finish the job.

5. Respect Question-Mark Cells

Question-mark cells are deliberately unhelpful. They do not give you the normal adjacent count, so you cannot solve them by staring at their neighbors alone. Treat them as blocked information and solve around them.

The best response is to lean harder on external clues. Use line totals crossing the area, nearby numbered cells, and bracket or hyphen restrictions to narrow which neighbors could be blue. Once enough surrounding cells are proven, the question mark no longer needs to tell you anything.

Do not invent a count for a question mark. If the board has not proved a nearby cell, leave it alone.

6. Open Numbered Blue Overlays Early

Numbered blue cells are one of Hexcells Plus’s defining complications. When opened, they show an overlay covering a two-hex radius, and the number tells you how many cells inside that area must be blue. These clues often link clusters that normal adjacent numbers cannot connect.

Open overlays whenever the surrounding board changes. If the overlay already contains enough confirmed blue cells, clear its remaining candidates. If the remaining candidates exactly match what it still needs, mark them. If two overlays overlap, compare shared cells against each clue’s remaining count.

Keep overlays tidy. Open the one you are using, solve from it, then close or dim it only when it is genuinely complete. Too many active overlays can make a clean logic board look noisier than it is.

7. Compare Clues Instead of Solving Them Alone

The middle and late puzzles often stall because no single clue gives an obvious answer. That is your signal to compare constraints. A local number may need one more blue, a line may need two more, and an overlay may cover the same candidates with a different limit. Together, those clues can force a move that none of them can prove alone.

Look for overlapping groups with almost no slack. If a row and an overlay share candidates but the overlay still needs one blue outside the row, the shared cells may be limited. If a local number cannot accept adjacent cells because of a hyphenated clue, a distant line candidate may become forced.

Hexcells Plus rewards this kind of cross-checking. The important question is not “What does this clue say?” It is “What does this clue make impossible when combined with the next one?“

8. Use Contradiction Without Guessing

Hard puzzles can require short mental tests. Pick an uncertain cell and ask what would happen if it were blue. Follow the consequences through every nearby count, line total, bracket, hyphen, and overlay. If that assumption overfills a clue, breaks a connected group, or starves a required count, the opposite state is proven.

You can test black the same way. If clearing a cell would leave a line without enough possible blue cells, that cell must be blue. This is not guessing because you make the proof before the click.

For dense boards, use a small note outside the game. Write candidate labels or count remaining possibilities. The interface is minimal, so external notes can keep multi-step logic from collapsing in your head.

9. Restart Dirty Boards Before They Waste Time

Mistakes are not just cosmetic. Hexcells Plus tracks how cleanly you clear puzzles, and too many errors can slow or block progression into later levels. When an early mistake makes the board feel inconsistent, restarting is usually faster than trying to reason from a corrupted state.

Replay is also a learning tool. Once you discover the key interaction in a difficult puzzle, a second clean solve often takes a fraction of the time. Use that to improve results before moving on.

If a puzzle has become frustrating, step away. The game is quiet and exacting; fatigue makes likely-looking cells feel more certain than they are.

10. Treat Hexcells Plus as a Challenge Sequel

Hexcells Plus is best approached as a harder set of logic lessons, not simply more of the first game. It hides information with question marks and asks you to manage radius overlays while still reading local and line clues accurately.

That difficulty is the point. Slow down, keep the board visually calm, and solve in loops: local numbers, line totals, bracket and hyphen shapes, overlays, then contradiction checks. When nothing moves, restart the loop from the top. A clue that was useless two minutes ago may become decisive after one new mark.

The safest mindset is patience. You are not looking for a clever guess. You are waiting for the board to leave you no alternative.
