Metal Slug Anthology Beginner Tips - Seven-Game Collection Guide

Metal Slug Anthology tips for choosing games, controls, co-op, saves, continues, tokens, Wii controls, PSP wireless play, and PS4 caveats.

On this page

Metal Slug Anthology is a collection guide problem as much as an arcade-shooter problem. You are choosing among Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, and Metal Slug 6, then dealing with a wrapper that changes controls, saving, continues, gallery rewards, and co-op behavior by platform.

The game is rated Teen for combat-themed arcade action, blood, crude humor, and violence. This guide keeps the advice non-graphic and focused on play habits, version choices, and beginner survival.

Essential Tips

1. Start With The Collection Menu

Pick the game you actually mean to play before thinking about routes or scoring. Anthology includes Metal Slug 1, 2, X, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and those entries do not all share the same inputs or systems. The PS2 manual even separates the Metal Slug attack input between earlier games and Metal Slug 4, 5, and 6.

For a first session, treat each entry as its own arcade game inside one shell. Learn one at a time instead of bouncing between every logo after a few deaths.

2. Use Simple Controls First

On PS2, the default pattern is easy to learn: move with the directional buttons or analog stick, jump with X, shoot with Square, throw grenades with Circle, and pause with Select. Metal Slug 6 adds extra actions, including weapon switching and throwing the current weapon when ammo allows.

Do not remap immediately unless the default layout truly feels wrong. Get one clean baseline, then adjust the controller layout or autofire option after you know what is bothering you.

3. Watch The Whole HUD

Your screen is telling you more than your score. The collection tracks character panel, Slug health, explosives, ammo, rescued hostages, weapon pickups, timer, score, remaining credits, and Metal Slug 4 medals.

Beginner deaths often happen because the player watches the center of the screen only. Glance at bombs before a boss, ammo before grabbing a new weapon, and credits before committing to limited-continue practice.

4. Use Continues With A Purpose

On PS2, Anthology lets you choose limited or unlimited continues in profile options, and the manual lists Easy, Normal, and Hard credit amounts for limited play. Unlimited continues are fine for seeing the games, but they can teach sloppy habits if every mistake is instantly erased.

Use unlimited continues to preview a new entry, then replay on limited continues when you want cleaner movement and better bomb timing.

5. Save Where The Collection Allows It

On PS2, the pause menu includes Save Game for most entries, and the profile can save settings, progress, and high-score data to a memory card. Metal Slug 6 is the important exception in the PS2 manual: Save Game is not available there.

Before a long PS2 session, make sure your profile is loading correctly. After changing controls, display mode, continues, or difficulty there, save from the menu instead of assuming the wrapper remembered it.

6. Use Tokens As A Practice Goal

On PS2, completing a game awards gallery tokens, with higher difficulty giving more. Tokens can unlock music, wallpapers, skins, concept art, and text commentary in the gallery.

That gives PS2 players a useful beginner loop: clear a game on Easy, spend the reward, then return on Normal once your routes and boss reactions improve. Do not chase higher difficulty only for tokens if you are still losing lives to basic movement.

7. Choose Wii Controls Carefully

The Wii version is its own case. Western releases lack Classic Controller support, so the practical choice is usually a GameCube controller or one of the Wii-specific schemes. Reviews were sharply critical of the motion-heavy options and treated GameCube control as the better fallback.

If you are on Wii, solve controls before judging the games. A bad input setup makes Metal Slug feel harsher than it really is.

8. Treat PSP Co-op Differently

PS2 and PS4 listings support 1-2 local players, but PSP play uses wireless two-player support rather than a shared couch setup. Wii multiplayer should be treated separately because its controller choices are also platform-specific.

Plan multiplayer around the platform in front of you. Do not assume the PS2 or PS4 local-player setup tells you how a PSP session starts, and do not judge Wii co-op before checking the controller setup.

9. Give Metal Slug 6 Extra Attention

Metal Slug 6 sits differently inside the package. The PS2 material notes separate extra controls for it, says PS2 profile difficulty does not affect it, and excludes it from the PS2 pause-save option.

That does not make it worse, but it does mean you should relearn the menu behavior and actions when you reach it. Do not carry every habit from Metal Slug X or 3 straight into 6.

10. Use PS4 And PS5 Caveats Practically

The PS4 listing supports 1-2 players and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration, and the store warns that PS5 backward compatibility can have missing features or unexpected behavior. That is a platform note, not a reason to skip the collection.

If you play the PS4 release on PS5, test controls, display, vibration, saves, and co-op before starting a serious limited-credit run.

Version And Platform Notes

The safest way to approach Anthology is to separate the wrapper from the arcade games. The seven games bring the shooting, jumping, grenades, vehicles, hostages, bosses, score, and time pressure. The wrapper adds game selection, profile settings, display options, controller options, gallery rewards, and platform-specific multiplayer setup.

On PS2, memory-card setup matters because the manual ties progress and settings to saved profile data. On PSP, wireless play is the key multiplayer distinction. On Wii, controller choice is the biggest comfort issue. On PS4, local 1-2 player support is clear, while the PS4 release on PS5 should be checked before relying on it for a clean run.

Also keep Metal Slug 6 separate in your head. Several wrapper options and inputs treat it differently, so it deserves a short test run even if you already know the earlier entries.

Playing The Seven Games

For each included game, begin with survival. Move in short steps, clear immediate threats, rescue hostages only when the space is safe, and use bombs before the screen traps you. Vehicles are powerful, but the HUD still matters because Slug health can disappear quickly when you stop dodging.

After you can finish an entry, add one extra goal. That might be fewer continues, better hostage count, safer boss bombs, a higher score, or, on PS2, a harder difficulty for more gallery tokens. Anthology rewards replaying completed games, so improvement is more useful than rushing through all seven once.

In co-op, split attention. One player can watch forward threats while the other covers high, rear, or pickup space. Standing on top of each other makes bullets, vehicles, and boss patterns harder to read, especially when both players are reacting to the same panic movement.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not treat all seven games as identical - Check the selected entry before applying inputs, save habits, or Metal Slug 6 assumptions.

  2. Do not ignore the wrapper menus - Set controls, display, difficulty, continues, and profile saves before serious play.

  3. Do not hoard bombs forever - Spend explosives when a boss, vehicle, or crowded screen is about to take a life.

  4. Do not chase hostages through active fire - Clear the immediate danger first, then collect the reward.

  5. Do not rely on PS2 saves in Metal Slug 6 - Play that entry with the pause-save limitation in mind.

  6. Do not use awkward Wii controls by default - Try the GameCube controller option when available.

  7. Do not assume PSP co-op starts like PS2 co-op - Set up wireless play for the portable version.

  8. Do not jump to Hard only for tokens - Build clears on Easy or Normal before chasing bigger gallery rewards.

  9. Do not forget remaining credits - Limited continues change how risky each boss attempt should be.

  10. Do not start a PS5 run cold - Test PS4 compatibility behavior before a long session.
