Metroid: Zero Mission Walkthrough - Route, Upgrades, and Boss Prep

Metroid: Zero Mission walkthrough route with key upgrades, boss prep, 100% cleanup planning, completion percentage notes, and sequence-break cautions.

On this page

Metroid: Zero Mission is a compact exploration game with a sharp route: collect a movement or weapon upgrade, use it to open the next section of Zebes, defeat Kraid and Ridley, enter Tourian, survive the post-Mother Brain twist, then decide whether to clean up for 100% before the final fight.

This walkthrough is a sourced route scaffold for a first clear. It covers the critical path, major upgrades, boss prep, completion percentage rules, and when to think about sequence breaks. It is not a room-by-room 100% item-coordinate checklist until the remaining pickup locations are checked with visual examples.

Before You Start

Use Action Names, Not Button Memory

Zero Mission exists across original and re-release contexts, so think in actions: jump, shoot, charge, ready missiles, open the map, dash, grab ledges with Power Grip, bomb in Morph Ball, and switch between Missiles and Super Missiles. If your platform remaps controls, the route still works as long as those actions are available.

Read the Map Like a Checklist

Rooms marked with item circles are your cleanup leads. Do not assume you can grab every marked item the first time you see it. Many expansions are designed for later tools like Bombs, Speed Booster, Shinespark, Space Jump, Power Bombs, or the Fully Powered Suit.

Save and Refill Before Route Gates

Use save rooms before bosses, elevators, Tourian, Chozodia, and late cleanup. Chozo Statues can restore health and ammunition when Samus curls into Morph Ball on their hands, so treat them as route resources rather than decoration.

Separate First Clear From 100%

For a first clear, the goal is to keep momentum and collect upgrades that improve survival. For 100%, the goal is different: every Missile, Super Missile, Power Bomb, Energy Tank, and upgrade matters. Do not turn the opening route into a stalled completion sweep before you have the tools to make cleanup efficient.

Main Route

Use this as the critical path. If an item circle or odd wall is out of reach, mark it mentally and return during the cleanup phase.

Return to Zebes

Start by treating Brinstar as a tutorial in miniature. Your first priority is Morph Ball, because it lets Samus enter low tunnels and begins the Metroid upgrade loop. Follow the early Chozo Statue guidance, collect Long Beam so your basic shots reach across rooms, and pay attention when the route shows the Kraid/Ridley statue gate to Tourian. That gate is the main midgame lock: both guardians must fall before Tourian opens.

Once Missiles are available, the route opens into East Brinstar and the first real boss check, Deorum. Hit its eye with missiles, shoot its spikes for resource recovery if needed, and collect Charge Beam from the reward. From there, build toward Bombs, Power Grip, and Ice Beam. These tools define the rest of the first act: Bombs test suspicious floors and walls, Power Grip stabilizes ledge movement, and Ice Beam lets you freeze enemies into platforms or stop threats.

Kraid’s Lair

Kraid’s Lair is your first major boss route. Move through the lair with missiles stocked, expect acid and enemy pressure, and do not burn every refill opportunity before the boss room.

Acid Worm is the route’s main pre-Kraid fight. Stay aware of the acid arena and zipline space, then attack when the worm exposes its vulnerable targets. After that, keep pushing toward Kraid.

Kraid’s weak point is his mouth. Hit his head to open it, then fire missiles into the mouth. His claws, flying spikes, and belly platforms all create movement pressure, but the belly platforms can also help you climb back into position. After Kraid falls, his Tourian statue lights and Speed Booster becomes available in the next room.

Powering Up

Speed Booster changes how you should read long floors and breakable routes. In this phase, the sourced route builds toward Hi-Jump Boots and Spring Ball, then Varia Suit and Wave Beam.

Varia Suit is the biggest survival upgrade in this stretch because it makes heat and acid routes manageable. If a room was draining too much energy earlier, recheck it after Varia. Wave Beam then improves combat and routing by changing how shots interact with barriers and enemies.

Kiru Giru sits in this power-up arc. Treat it as a positioning fight, not just a damage race. Enter with enough health and ammo to recover from mistakes, then use the newly opened route options to continue toward Ridley’s side of Zebes.

Ridley’s Lair

The intended route includes an Imago detour for Super Missiles before Ridley’s Lair. Super Missiles are both a combat upgrade and a route key, so do not skip the detour on a first clear unless you are deliberately practicing sequence breaks.

Ridley is dangerous because his tail is not a safe target. Attack from the front, watch his fireballs and tail pressure, and use regular missiles freely while holding Super Missiles for clear openings. Once Ridley falls, the second Tourian statue condition is met.

Mother Brain

After Ridley, route back through Norfair for Screw Attack, then head to Tourian from upper Brinstar once both Kraid and Ridley are down.

Tourian is short but punishing. Metroids must be frozen, then killed with missiles or a Super Missile. If one latches onto Samus, use Morph Ball bombs to shake it off. Enter stocked, because sloppy Tourian play can drain resources before Mother Brain.

Mother Brain has three stages of pressure: Zebetites, the glass tube, and the eye. Destroy Zebetites quickly before they respawn, break the glass, then hit the eye with Super Missiles after the eye-laser opening. When Mother Brain falls, the route turns into a two-minute escape back to the ship.

Do not relax at the ship. Zero Mission continues after the escape.

Zero Mission

After the ambush, Samus enters Chozodia without the Power Suit. This is a stealth and survival section, not a normal combat chapter. The pistol is weak but can stun Space Pirates, which gives you time to move past enemies, lasers, spotlights, alarms, and sealed doors.

Move deliberately. Running into alarms creates more pressure than the pistol can comfortably solve. Save Stations in this section restore health and ammo, so use them whenever the route gives you the chance.

The Chozo Test is the turning point. Clear it to regain the Fully Powered Suit, then collect the newly activated late-game abilities, including Space Jump, Plasma Beam, Gravity Suit, Super Missile expansions, and Power Bomb access. At that point, you can either head toward the final fight or start a serious 100% cleanup.

Mission’s End

The final phase is split between optional cleanup and Mecha Ridley. If you only want the clear, go to the final confrontation once your resources are comfortable. If you want 100%, sweep the remaining expansion rooms now, because the late kit finally supports Power Bomb checks, Space Jump movement, Speed Booster/Shinespark puzzles, and hard-to-reach item circles.

Mecha Ridley attacks with claw swipes, fireballs, lasers, and homing missiles. Stay mobile with Space Jump, use Screw Attack to destroy missiles when possible, break the chest glass, then unload Super Missiles into the exposed flashing core. After Mecha Ridley falls, the last escape begins. Keep moving and be ready for tough gray Space Pirates near the end.

100% Cleanup and Completion Percentage

Zero Mission’s item percentage is unusually clean: there are 100 counted items, so each item is 1% on the ending screen. That makes 100% easy to understand but not easy to route.

Use this cleanup plan:

  1. Clear the main route through the Fully Powered Suit.
  2. Revisit every remaining item-circle room with Power Bombs, Space Jump, Gravity Suit, Speed Booster, and Shinespark access.
  3. Separate expansion types in your notes: Missiles, Super Missiles, Power Bombs, Energy Tanks, and major suit/weapon upgrades.
  4. Save before late Shinespark or Power Bomb puzzle chains.
  5. Delay the final Mecha Ridley route until you are satisfied with your item percentage goal.

For challenge runs, 15% and 9% are separate goals from a normal walkthrough. A 15% run means finishing with 15 or fewer items, while 9% is cited as the lowest possible percentage. Do not mix low-percent habits into a first clear unless you already know the route.

Sequence Breaks

Zero Mission supports sequence breaks, including examples such as Early Ridley, Early Varia Suit, Early Super Missiles, and Early Screw Attack. They are part of the game’s long-term appeal, but they should not be your default first-playthrough route.

Use this rule: if the trick requires bomb jumping, wall jumping, Shinespark routing, enemy freezing to reach a hidden shaft, or skipping an obvious statue/objective chain, treat it as optional. Learn the normal route first, then practice sequence breaks as a separate routing challenge.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not ignore item circles on the map - They are your best clue for future cleanup.

  2. Do not force every item the moment you see it - Many pickups are easier or only practical after later movement tools.

  3. Do not enter Kraid, Ridley, Tourian, or Mecha Ridley without refilling - Bosses and escape sequences punish low resources.

  4. Do not waste Super Missiles on routine enemies - Save them for bosses, barriers, and high-pressure rooms.

  5. Do not fight the Zero Suit section like normal Samus - Stun, avoid alarms, and move carefully.

  6. Do not treat sequence breaks as required progression - Advanced shortcuts can derail a first clear if you do not know the backup route.

  7. Do not start final cleanup before the Fully Powered Suit - Late tools make the 100% sweep much cleaner.
