Path of Exile, developed and published by Grinding Gear Games, is a free online action RPG built around dark fantasy combat, itemized skills, a huge passive tree, league economies, crafting currency, and map-based endgame progression.
Content warning: ESRB rates Path of Exile M for Mature 17+ with Intense Violence, Blood and Gore, Sexual Themes, Nudity, and Language. Steam’s mature-content note also names horror scenes, violence, and nudity. This guide stays non-graphic and gameplay-focused.
This guide is for a first campaign run or a returning player relearning the basics before maps. It avoids exact league-starter builds, boss strategies, Atlas farming, currency flipping, and current economy calls until those are refreshed against the active patch.
Patch note: As of July 6, 2026, this guide covers Path of Exile: Mirage 3.28. Return of the Ancestors is active from June 25 to July 16, Mirage ends July 20, and 3.29 is scheduled for July 24. Treat build, economy, league, and endgame advice as league-specific.
Essential Tips
1. Start With the Right League for Your Goal
A league choice decides economy, characters, rules, and sometimes mechanics.
If you want the normal fresh-start experience, choose the current challenge league. If a special event is active, read its rules before entering it. Return of the Ancestors, for example, requires a new character and uses event-specific Ascendancy rules, so it is not the same as casually continuing an old character.
2. Do Not Start in Ruthless for a First Run
Ruthless is built around scarcity and friction.
Ruthless can be interesting later, but a first Path of Exile character already has enough to learn: sockets, flasks, gems, passives, resistances, currency, crafting, and maps. Learn the normal item flow before choosing the harder mode.
3. Follow a Current Beginner Build
The passive tree is powerful, but rebuilding is not free.
Path of Exile lets you experiment, but a brand-new player can waste many points before understanding why. Use a current beginner or league-start build as a track to follow, then experiment after you know how damage, defense, and gem links fit together.
4. Build Around One Main Skill First
Your main damage skill needs links more than a crowded skill bar.
Most builds revolve around one or two main skill gems. A linked support gem can change or multiply what that skill does, while unrelated gems in unlinked sockets do nothing for it. Early on, prioritize a usable three-link or four-link for your main skill before chasing flashy side setups.
5. Read Support Gem Restrictions
A support gem only helps if it can support that skill.
Support gems have tags, socket colors, and compatibility limits. If a support does not affect your main skill, it is only taking space. When your damage feels weak, check whether your active skill is actually linked to the supports your build expects.
6. Treat the Passive Tree as a Route
Nearby nodes are not automatically good nodes.
Small passives, notables, masteries, keystones, and jewel sockets all do different jobs. Do not click a node only because it is close. A build path usually travels toward specific damage, life, defense, reservation, or keystone goals.
7. Keep Fire, Cold, and Lightning Resistances High
Elemental resistance is one of the first survival checks.
Try to reach the normal elemental resistance cap when possible, especially after Act V and Act X resistance penalties. If enemies suddenly start killing you, open the character defense panel before assuming your build is broken.
8. Put Life and Resistances on Gear
Early rare gear is usually about survival, not perfect damage.
New players often keep an exciting weapon or unique item while the rest of the gear has no life or elemental resistance. A plain rare belt, ring, boots, gloves, or helmet with useful life and resists can be a bigger upgrade than a strange unique you do not understand.
9. Use Flasks Like Combat Buttons
Flasks are active survival and damage tools.
Life, mana, utility, and build-specific flasks are part of your character. They refill through kills and safe areas, so do not save every flask charge for a perfect emergency and then die with all five ready.
10. Install a Loot Filter Early
Path of Exile drops too many items to judge by eye.
A filter makes important drops visible and hides low-value clutter. Start with a beginner-friendly or semi-strict filter, then increase strictness as you enter maps and stop needing every small pickup.
11. Think of Currency as Tools
Orbs are not just money; they also modify items.
Chaos Orbs, Chromatic Orbs, Jeweller’s Orbs, Orbs of Fusing, and many other currencies have practical crafting uses. Do not spam valuable currency on random low-level gear until you know what the orb does and whether the item will last.
12. Enter Maps Slowly
The campaign teaches basics; maps test the build.
After Act X, maps become the main endgame. Start with low-tier maps, read map modifiers, and avoid mods your build cannot handle. More item quantity and harder mods are not worth much if the map repeatedly kills you.
Build and Gear Habits
- Pick a main skill: Level the skill your build actually uses, and keep its support links current.
- Watch socket colors: Strength gear tends toward red sockets, Dexterity toward green, and Intelligence toward blue, so choose bases that can realistically fit your gems.
- Use movement: A mobility skill helps you dodge, reposition, and move through areas faster.
- Upgrade defenses first: Life and elemental resistances solve many early walls.
- Check vendors: Town vendors can sell useful linked items and missing gems at key campaign points.
- Level spare gems: Weapon-swap sockets can level extra gems even when those weapons are not active.
- Be careful with keystones: Keystone passives usually have major upsides and downsides, so take them only when the build expects them.
- Use Path of Building later: It is a strong planning tool, but it works best once you understand what the build is trying to solve.
Loot and Currency Habits
- Do not pick up everything: Keep inventory space for currency, useful linked gear, jewelry, belts, and build-relevant bases.
- Identify with purpose: Rings, amulets, belts, boots, gloves, and weapons can matter while leveling, but most random rares will be replaced quickly.
- Use a filter update path: Syncing or following a maintained filter helps it stay useful after league changes.
- Save expensive currency: If an orb is valuable in trade, do not spend it casually on gear you will replace in ten minutes.
- Learn simple recipes: Red-green-blue linked items can become Chromatic Orbs, and vendor conversions can help sustain scrolls early.
- Use the crafting bench: A missing resistance craft can fix a character faster than waiting for a perfect drop.
- Check prices before trading: Economy values move during a league, especially near league start or before a major patch.
Endgame and League Habits
- Finish the campaign before judging the endgame: Maps, Atlas progression, map modifiers, bosses, and league mechanics change the game significantly after Act X.
- Read map mods: Reflect, reduced recovery, ailment, curse, and damage mods can break some builds.
- Build for survival before profit: Fast farming is useless if you cannot finish the map.
- Treat event characters as separate plans: Event leagues can have special mechanics, transfer rules, or respec behavior.
- Refresh builds at league launch: 3.29 may change skills, supports, Ascendancies, items, Atlas strategies, and market prices.
- Use community tools carefully: PoE Ninja, trade, FilterBlade, PoELab, and Path of Building are references, not substitutes for reading your own character sheet.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Linked sockets | Let support gems modify active skills | Put your main skill and supports in the same linked group |
| Socket colors | Control which gems fit an item | Use item bases that match your build’s attributes |
| Resistance penalties | Lower defenses after major campaign milestones | Recheck gear after Act V and Act X |
| Flask refills | Restore flask charges through kills and safe areas | Use flasks during danger instead of hoarding every charge |
| Loot filters | Hide clutter and highlight useful drops | Start less strict, then tighten the filter in maps |
| Currency value | Changes with league demand and item needs | Price-check before trading or spending valuable orbs |
| Map modifiers | Change map difficulty and rewards | Read mods before opening a map |
| League resets | Create fresh economies and new mechanics | Refresh build and economy advice every league |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not click passive nodes without a route - Refunds are limited early, and scattered nodes weaken the character.
-
Do not run unsupported main skills - A main skill without proper links will fall behind quickly.
-
Do not ignore elemental resistances after Act V - The penalty can turn safe areas into sudden deaths.
-
Do not equip every unique item you find - A rare item with life and resistances may be stronger for your current build.
-
Do not leave all flask charges unused during fights - Flasks are part of combat, not only emergency decorations.
-
Do not fill your inventory with every rare drop - Constant town trips slow progression and bury better pickups.
-
Do not spend valuable currency on disposable leveling gear - Save expensive orbs until you know the upgrade will matter.
-
Do not open maps without reading modifiers - Some map mods can disable recovery, reflect damage, or punish your build’s defenses.
-
Do not start an event character expecting old-character progress - Event rules may require a fresh character and special migration behavior.
-
Do not keep using a pre-patch build after a major league launch - Skills, supports, items, Ascendancies, Atlas strategies, and prices can change.
