Pokémon Shining Pearl is a Nintendo Switch remake of the Sinnoh adventure from Pokémon Pearl. It follows the familiar route-to-gym rhythm, but the remake adds modern conveniences and a much larger Grand Underground that can reshape your team early.
This guide is for Shining Pearl specifically. Brilliant Diamond shares the campaign structure, but version-exclusive Pokémon and some legendary options differ. If you want every Pokémon, plan for trades from the start.

1. Choose A Starter For Your Habits
Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup can all carry a first playthrough, so do not restart just because one has a rougher early matchup. Pick the partner whose style you will actually use.
Turtwig gives you a sturdy Grass path and wants early levels before the first Gym. Chimchar is fast and aggressive, but needs backup for that first Rock-type test. Piplup starts defensive, can struggle around the second Gym, and later becomes a very reliable Water and Steel option.
2. Build A Team, Not A Mascot
Your starter can be one of your strongest partners, but Sinnoh expects you to solve type matchups. Add Pokémon that answer your starter’s bad fights. A Chimchar file appreciates Water or Grass help early. A Piplup file wants a plan for Grass pressure. A Turtwig file benefits from answers to Flying, Ice, and Bug threats.
Keep six useful battlers rotating in your party instead of letting one favorite absorb every level. You will need coverage for gyms, caves, Galactic fights, and the late Pokémon League stretch.
3. Reach Eterna City And Unlock The Grand Underground
The Grand Underground opens after you reach Eterna City and get the Explorer Kit from the Underground Man near the Pokémon Center. Make that a priority. Once opened, it gives you wild Pokémon, digging spots, vendors, healers, fossils, spheres, statues, and Secret Base tools.

Look for Magby in volcanic terrain, Misdreavus and Sableye in dazzling terrain, Pinsir and Lotad-line options in grassland terrain, and Bagon or Shelgon in spacious caves when your progress allows them.
5. Treat Shining Pearl Exclusives As Trade Currency
Shining Pearl has its own exclusives, including Glameow, Shieldon, Misdreavus, Palkia, Pinsir, Magby-line options, Bagon-line options, and the legendary birds and Lugia in postgame systems. Brilliant Diamond players need different Pokémon, so your version has real trade value.
Catch duplicates when you can. Keeping spare exclusives makes it easier to trade for Cranidos, Murkrow, Stunky, Dialga, and other Brilliant Diamond-only targets later.

Underground digging rewards patience. Use the stronger hammer to reveal the general shape of buried items, then switch to the pickax when you know what you want to save before the wall collapses.
Prioritize fossils, rare stones, useful items, and Stone Boxes. Spheres are not wasted, because vendors use them for rotating items and Digger Drills. A few focused trips beat random tapping across every wall.
9. Set Up Statues Around The Pokémon You Want
Statues in your Secret Base are more than decorations. They can improve the chance of seeing Pokémon of a matching type in Hideaways. The strongest active type effect is what matters, so stack toward one goal instead of scattering every statue you own.
Collecting Diglett and Dugtrio sparkles can temporarily improve Gorgeous Stone Box odds. If you are farming statues, stay underground long enough to use that timer instead of leaving as soon as the counter fills.
10. Plan Trades Around Badge Obedience
Trading is the cleanest way to get opposite-version Pokémon, and traded Pokémon gain levels faster. That speed has a catch: high-level traded Pokémon may ignore you until your badges support them.
Use trades to fill your Pokédex and patch reasonable team holes. Do not expect an overleveled borrowed legend to carry a new file before you have the badges to command it.
Shining Pearl Priorities
Your early run should focus on stable team coverage, not perfect collection. Pick your starter, add two or three backup types before the first few gyms, and keep routes moving until Eterna City opens the Underground. From there, check Hideaways whenever your team lacks a type answer.
For Shining Pearl players, Misdreavus and Glameow are early identity picks, while Shieldon gives the fossil line tied to this version. Later, Palkia is your box legendary, and postgame legendary planning points toward Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Lugia rather than Brilliant Diamond’s legendary beast and Ho-Oh set.
The National Pokédex chase can wait. Seeing the Sinnoh Pokédex is the important early completion target, so battle trainers you would normally skip and return to missed routes after new travel options open.
Grand Underground Plan
Enter from different parts of Sinnoh when you want new underground zones. The map is not one identical cave network from every entrance; surface location affects which zone you reach. That matters for terrain, items, NPCs, and Spiritomb progress.
Use Dusk Balls for Hideaway catches, bring enough healing to handle tougher wild levels, and leave space in your party or boxes before a long trip. When hunting a particular Pokémon, refresh the room by exiting and reentering instead of fighting everything you see.
For Spiritomb, treat the Underground as a long-term project. You need an Odd Keystone and 32 unique player or NPC conversations before using the Hallowed Tower setup. Save before the encounter, because a failed catch wastes that Keystone attempt.
