Pokemon Sword, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, is a Nintendo Switch RPG set in Galar. You choose Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble, build a Pokemon team, take on the Gym Challenge, use the Wild Area, learn Dynamax and Max Raid Battles, and work toward the Champion Cup.
This guide is scoped to Pokemon Sword, not Pokemon Shield. It covers first-playthrough habits and service caveats, but it does not include a full walkthrough, exact encounter tables, Gym teams, competitive builds, complete Pokedex routing, DLC legendary routes, curry recipes, raid den maps, active event claims, or step-by-step HOME/Bank transfer instructions in this beginner guide.
Difficulty caveat: GameFAQs user stats rate Pokemon Sword as Easy on average, with a roughly 43-hour average play time. It is approachable, but the version, DLC, online, and transfer layers can waste time if you follow the wrong assumptions.
Essential Tips
1. Use Sword-Specific Advice
Sword and Shield share a structure, but they are not identical.
Sword has its own version-exclusive Pokemon and Gym Leaders. Do not blindly follow Shield steps for Galarian Ponyta, Allister, Melony, or Shield-only encounters. For Sword, expect examples like Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Galarian Darumaka, Bea, and Gordie to matter.
2. Build a Team Before the Gym Challenge Narrows Your Options
A starter can carry early fights, but a full team solves more problems.
Galar’s route is built around Gyms, rivals, Wild Area scouting, Team Yell interruptions, Max Raids, and late-game tournament battles. Catch useful backups early, rotate them through your party, and keep type coverage wider than one favorite Pokemon.
3. Treat the Wild Area as a Scout Zone
The Wild Area is useful before you can safely control everything in it.
Weather and location affect encounters, and strong wild Pokemon may appear before you can catch them. Use early Wild Area visits for scouting, items, and reasonable catches instead of trying to force every impressive-looking Pokemon into your party immediately.
4. Dynamax With a Plan
Dynamax lasts three turns and is usually once per battle.
Do not trigger it just because the button appears. Save Dynamax for a turn where extra power, Max Move effects, or a safer knockout changes the fight. Since Max Moves inherit from the moves your Pokemon already knows, basic moveset planning matters.
5. Learn Max Raids Early, But Do Not Overtrust Them
Raids are a major Sword system, not just bonus fights.
Check active dens, read star difficulty, and bring Pokemon that can contribute instead of only chasing rare catches. If other players are unavailable, support Trainers can fill slots, but harder raids still need better typing, levels, and patience.
6. Use Boxes Like a Normal Tool
Pokemon Sword lets you manage Boxes from many places outside towns.
Swap party members while traveling, test new catches, and keep utility Pokemon available. Remember that some areas, such as Gym missions, restrict Box access, so prepare before entering structured challenges.
7. Decide How You Want Saves to Work
Autosave starts enabled, but manual saves still exist.
Autosave is convenient for normal play. If you prefer tighter control before one-time encounters, trades, purchases, or major story moments, check the Options menu and set saving behavior deliberately.
8. Use Camp and Curry as Support, Not a Distraction
Pokemon Camp is useful, but it can become a side project.
Camp lets you play with party Pokemon and cook curry with ingredients and Berries. Use it to support the journey, then save Curry Dex completion and recipe work for later unless that is your main goal.
9. Match the Expansion Pass to Sword
The Sword Expansion Pass and Shield Expansion Pass are separate.
If you own Pokemon Sword, you need the Pokemon Sword Expansion Pass. The wrong pass will not unlock the added content for your game. Check your version and current store listing before buying anything.
10. Check Transfers Before Moving Pokemon
HOME and Bank are useful, but movement rules are conditional.
Sword works with Pokemon HOME for compatible Pokemon. Bank-to-HOME transfer requires HOME Premium, Bank and Poke Transporter are no longer new downloads, and Bank-to-HOME movement is one-way. Check the current service state before transferring anything valuable.
Galar Progression Habits
- Talk before leaving towns: Pokemon Centers, shop access, NPCs, and local hints often matter before the next route.
- Prepare before Gyms: Box access can be restricted in Gym missions, so set your party first.
- Keep healing and balls stocked: Wild Area detours, routes, and raids can stretch a session longer than expected.
- Rotate Pokemon naturally: New captures are easier to judge if you actually battle with them.
- Respect version labels: Sword-only and Shield-only advice can diverge around Pokemon, Gyms, DLC rivals, and Legendary availability.
- Leave exact cleanup for later: Full Pokedex work, event Pokemon, Battle Tower details, and DLC legendary routing need dedicated checklists.
Wild Area, Dynamax, and Max Raids
| System | Good Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Wild Area weather | Recheck areas under different conditions | Encounters can change by location and weather |
| Strong wild Pokemon | Back off when the game limits catches | Early power spikes are not always meant to be captured |
| Free camera | Look around for Pokemon and items | The Wild Area is more open than normal routes |
| Dynamax | Save it for momentum turns | Three turns disappear quickly |
| Max Moves | Build movesets before relying on effects | Max Move types come from known moves |
| Max Raids | Bring a useful matchup, not just a favorite | Star difficulty and barriers punish weak choices |
| Support Trainers | Use them when solo, but expect limits | AI support does not replace good prep |
| Online raids | Check Nintendo Switch Online needs | Internet raid play requires the paid service |
Sword, Shield, and DLC Differences
Pokemon Sword has enough exclusive material that you should label your notes. Sword examples include Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Galarian Darumaka, Galarian Darmanitan, Bea, and Gordie. Shield examples include Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta, Eiscue, Galarian Corsola, Cursola, Allister, and Melony.
The Expansion Pass has the same big idea in both games, but the purchase and some content are version-specific. Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra add new Pokedexes, dens, tutor moves, Cram-o-matic, Max Soup, Restricted Sparring, Dynamax Adventures, returning Legendary Pokemon, and the Galarian Star Tournament. In Isle of Armor, Sword uses Klara where Shield uses Avery.
Use these rules before mixing DLC into a base playthrough:
- Buy only the matching pass: Sword needs the Sword Expansion Pass.
- Do not assume DLC is just postgame: The DLC areas can be visited after first reaching the Wild Area, but prepare before treating them as an early detour.
- Treat Kubfu and Calyrex as route projects: Make a separate save and review your choices before committing to a path.
- Separate Crown Tundra Legendary claims by version: Some Legendary availability differs between Sword and Shield with the pass.
- Keep store claims fresh: Check price, bundles, codes, and availability before buying or redeeming anything.
Online, Events, HOME, and Bank Caveats
Online and transfer guidance is service-sensitive. These notes reflect the service setup and can change before you rely on them.
| Feature | Current Note | Player Habit |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | Required for some online features and Battle Stadium | Confirm membership before planning internet battles or raids |
| Wild Area News | No new updates after November 1, 2022 | Do not expect fresh official raid events |
| Max Raid Battles | Wild Area Max Raid Battles continue | Treat raids as available, but event pools as historical unless refreshed |
| Ranked Battles | No longer updated after Season 36; no monthly ranking rewards | Do not follow current-meta or reward-farming advice without a new source |
| Online Competitions | No future Sword/Shield Online Competitions are planned | Treat official competitions as historical |
| Friendly Competitions | Can still be held, but later results are not reflected in HOME | Use them casually, not for HOME record tracking |
| Y-Comm | Link Trades, Surprise Trades, Swap Cards, Link Battles, and Camp internet features may still be available | Check live behavior before planning trades |
| Pokemon HOME | Compatible with Sword/Shield for eligible Pokemon | Check per-Pokemon compatibility before moving |
| Pokemon Bank | No-cost service has no planned end date in Nintendo’s support wording | Recheck before relying on it |
| Poke Transporter | No longer available for new download | Do not build a transfer plan around software you do not already have |
| Bank to HOME | Requires HOME Premium and is one-way | Pause before moving rare or old Pokemon |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Following Shield-only instructions - Sword has different exclusives, Gym Leaders, and DLC rival details.
-
Trying to catch every strong Wild Area Pokemon immediately - Some early encounters are meant to be avoided until you progress.
-
Wasting Dynamax on a low-value turn - Three turns and one use per battle make timing important.
-
Entering raids with poor typing - Max Raid difficulty, barriers, and failure conditions punish unprepared teams.
-
Ignoring Box access before Gyms - Some mission areas restrict Box swapping.
-
Leaving autosave unexamined - The default is convenient, but you should choose the save behavior you actually want.
-
Buying the wrong Expansion Pass - Sword and Shield passes are separate and must match the owned game.
-
Treating DLC legendary routes as simple cleanup - Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor routes need confirmed choices, levels, and rewards.
-
Planning around old events - Wild Area News, Ranked rewards, and Online Competitions changed after 2022.
-
Moving Pokemon through HOME casually - Bank-to-HOME transfer is one-way, HOME Premium may be required, and not every Pokemon can enter Sword.
