Portal: Revolution is a free Portal 2 mod by Second Face Software that asks you to solve a longer, tougher run of Aperture test chambers. It is still built around Portal logic, but it changes the rhythm by limiting your portal control early, adding new cube and gel interactions, and making familiar rooms feel less automatic.

This is an advanced guide, not because the game demands speedrunner tricks, but because the puzzles expect you to read chamber rules carefully. If you can finish Portal 2, you have the tools; the challenge is slowing down enough to use them deliberately.

Essential Tips

1. Start every chamber by finding the fixed portal

Many early Revolution puzzles give you control of only the blue portal while the orange portal stays anchored somewhere in the room. That limitation is the whole puzzle, not a temporary inconvenience. Before moving a cube or firing at the first white wall, find the fixed portal and ask what route, object path, or sightline it already creates.

Once you know what the fixed portal does, the room usually becomes smaller. Your job is not to build any portal pair you want; it is to choose the one blue portal location that makes the fixed orange portal useful.

2. Read the exit before touching the cube

Cubes are rarely just weights. They can hold buttons, redirect lasers, ride vents, pass through portal routes, block hazards, or set up a later movement step. Look at the exit door first, then identify every button, receiver, barrier, and object route connected to it.

If a room has multiple cube jobs, solve them in order. A cube that opens a door may also need to be recoverable after an emancipation grill, funnel, or vent changes the room state.

3. Treat gels as route changes, not decoration

Blue and orange gels change what surfaces mean. A blue-coated wall can become a bounce route, an orange-coated ramp can turn a cube into a sliding object, and a cleansing field can reset gel effects on you or on puzzle objects. Do not spread gel randomly and hope the answer appears.

Find the surface that needs the effect, then work backward to the pipe, portal angle, or object path that can deliver it. If a cleansing field is present, assume the chamber wants you to understand when gel should be kept and when it should be removed.

4. Use vents and funnels as object paths first

Pneumatic Diversity Vents and excursion funnels can move cubes, carry you, or change the timing of a puzzle, but they are easiest to understand as paths. Stand still and trace where the tube or funnel begins, where it ends, and whether a button changes its behavior.

When a cube must travel through a vent or funnel, avoid chasing it immediately. Watch the full route once. If it passes over safe ground, a button, or a portalable wall, that is probably the clue.

5. Preserve useful portals until their job is finished

Portal: Revolution often builds a solution across several small steps. One portal may be holding your return route, another may be redirecting a cube, and a later portal shot may be needed for momentum. Replacing a working portal too early can erase the only clean path back to the room’s main state.

Before firing, say what your current portal is doing. If the answer is “I am not sure,” wait. A ten-second pause is faster than rebuilding a chamber state from scratch.

6. Let the room teach the new mechanic

The campaign introduces new elements in playable spaces, so the first room with a mechanic is usually a lesson. Test one interaction at a time: what survives a field, what gets cleaned, what the linked cube does with a laser, what a button changes, and where an object lands after a vent carries it.

Avoid solving by frantic movement during these introductions. The intended lesson is usually clearer than the final solution, and missing that lesson makes the next chamber feel much harder.

7. Use momentum only after the logic is clear

Faith plates, angled panels, floor-to-wall portal routes, and long drops still matter, but Revolution is not mainly a twitch test. If a movement step fails, check the setup before repeating the jump. You may need a higher portal, a different landing surface, a cleaner line through a static portal, or a cube positioned before you launch.

Momentum puzzles become manageable when you know the start, exit, and reset point. Do not practice the jump until you know what a successful jump is supposed to accomplish.

8. Expect harder Portal 2 thinking, not obscure guessing

Revolution starts from a place that assumes Portal 2 familiarity. The difficulty comes from constraints, combinations, and new puzzle pieces, not from expecting advanced trick movement in every chamber. When stuck, return to Portal fundamentals: exits, blockers, object jobs, portalable surfaces, and cause-and-effect testing.

That caveat matters. The game can be hard, but it is usually hard in a fair, readable way if you slow down and rebuild the room model.

Difficulty Caveat

Portal: Revolution is best played after Portal 2. It can teach its own new mechanics, but it does not need to reteach the full Portal language from zero. You should already be comfortable with portal colors, cube buttons, laser receivers, aerial faith plates, gels, emancipation grills, and basic momentum.

If you are new to Portal, finish Portal 2 first. If you are returning after a long break, treat the opening chapter as a warmup and let the static-portal rooms rebuild your habits. The guide’s goal is to reduce confusion, not remove the pleasure of solving.

Static Portal Planning

The anchored-portal structure changes how you should scan rooms. Start by standing somewhere safe and answering four questions:

  1. Where does the fixed orange portal currently exit?
  2. Which blue-portal surfaces can connect to it?
  3. Which objects can pass through that route?
  4. What breaks if you replace your blue portal now?

That routine prevents most early mistakes. A static orange portal can be a doorway, a cube delivery route, a sightline, or the final leg of a fling. If you assume it is only a door, you may miss the object path the chamber is trying to show you.

When you finally gain more control, keep the same discipline. Full two-portal freedom can make rooms feel more open, but the clean answer still depends on giving each portal a job.

  1. Firing the blue portal before checking the fixed orange portal - You may erase the only route that makes the room readable.

  2. Carrying a cube away from its first button too early - The button may be holding open the path you need to retrieve that same cube later.

  3. Coating every surface with gel - Random gel placement hides the one surface that actually changes the route.

  4. Walking through a cleansing field without a plan - You may remove the coating or object state the next step depends on.

  5. Chasing a vent-carried cube immediately - Watching its path once usually reveals where the puzzle wants it to land.

  6. Aiming linked laser cubes while standing in the beam path - Set the line from a safe angle, then adjust the receiver.

  7. Repeating a failed fling without changing the setup - Portal height, angle, or destination is usually the problem.

  8. Ignoring surfaces above or below eye level - Revolution often hides the useful portalable panel outside the first horizontal scan.

  9. Treating funnels like optional traversal - A funnel may be the cube route, the player route, or both.
