Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 Essential Tips - Passing, Tactics, and Modes

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 tips for passing, Pass and Run attacks, Game Plan tactics, shot selection, Master League habits, and local modes.

On this page

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, developed and published by Konami, is a soccer simulation built around patient passing, first-touch control, tactical shape, and match rhythm. The best habits come from reading the pitch before forcing a highlight: move defenders, time the run, then choose the pass or shot that actually fits the moment.

This guide covers the Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 release, with Xbox Series X|S included for the Xbox One store version. It does not cover PES 2018 Mobile, later eFootball entries, or modern roster states. Online modes and myClub were part of the release-era game, but availability can differ today, so treat this as an offline-first improvement guide unless you have checked your platform’s menus.

Essential Tips

  1. Build attacks with Pass and Run. Hold the run modifier after a pass so the passer continues forward and becomes an option again. This is one of the easiest ways to turn a safe exchange into a one-two, pull a defender out of the line, or give yourself a runner behind the midfield. Do it with intent: if the passer is a full-back or holding midfielder, make sure another player is covering the space he leaves.

  2. Use through balls when a runner has already won space. Ground and lofted through balls are strong when the receiving player is moving into a gap, but weak when you use them as a panic button. Watch the angle between the defender and the runner. If the defender is still goal side and balanced, recycle possession. If the runner is level or already turning the shoulder, release early before the lane closes.

  3. Attack wide, then decide quickly. Fast wingers can stretch PES 2018’s defensive shape, especially when you reach the byline or the edge of the box. The goal is not always an immediate cross. Sometimes the best play is a cutback to a late runner, a short pass into the half-space, or a reset that keeps the defense moving. Cross when the box is occupied; cut back when defenders are running toward their own goal.

  4. Stop treating long shots as the default answer. PES 2018 can make a clean strike feel great, but low-percentage shots waste promising possession. Before shooting from distance, check whether the shooter has a clear sight of goal, strong body shape, and enough time to set the strike. If not, one more pass, a fake shot, or a carry toward the box usually creates a better chance.

  5. Use finesse shots only when accuracy matters more than power. A placed shot can beat a keeper who is shifting, but a weak finesse attempt is easy to save. Use it when you have the angle and room to add enough power. If you are very close to goal or under pressure, a normal shot with a clean release can be safer than trying to guide the ball perfectly.

  6. Make skills solve a real problem. Fake shots, stepovers, and other moves are useful when a defender has committed or when you need a half-yard for a cross or shot. They are not a substitute for spacing. If you try tricks in crowded midfield, you often lose the ball before the attack even starts. Use the simplest move that changes the defender’s balance.

  7. Head the ball down when the better shooter is nearby. Not every cross needs a direct header at goal. If the arriving player has poor angle or heavy pressure, look for a knockdown to a teammate in front of him. A controlled header into feet can create a cleaner shot than a forced header from a difficult position.

  8. Open Game Plan before blaming the players. Game Plan is where you can change positions, substitutions, and strategy. If your striker is isolated, your wingers never receive in space, or your midfield is too deep, fix the structure. Small changes to support, attacking style, or player roles can make the same team feel much more coherent.

  9. Use training games before raising the difficulty. PES 2018 rewards timing and touch. A few focused training sessions on passing, shooting, and set pieces are more useful than grinding full matches while repeating the same mistake. Practice one idea at a time: Pass and Run, through-ball timing, finesse-shot power, or defending the counter after a lost ball.

  10. Pick modes for the session you want. Master League is the long-form management route, Random Selection Match is a strong local party mode, and standard exhibition play is the cleanest place to practice. Do not judge your improvement only through online or myClub results, especially on an older sports release where service behavior and squad context can vary.

Passing and Chance Creation

PES 2018 is at its best when you let the ball and runners do the work. A good attack usually has three parts: a safe starting pass, a movement that changes the defensive line, and a final choice that uses the new space. If you skip the first two parts, you end up shooting from bad angles or forcing through balls into defenders.

Start by moving the ball away from pressure. If the middle is crowded, switch wide. If the wing is trapped, bounce the ball inside and send the wide player forward. The pass after the obvious pass is often the one that breaks the line.

When you enter the final third, think about the goalkeeper as well as the defenders. A square pass, cutback, or low cross can force the keeper to move before the shot. Shots into a set keeper need either power, placement, a screen, or a rebound plan. Otherwise you are giving possession away with extra ceremony.

Crossing works best when your target has separation or when another attacker is arriving late. If only one striker is surrounded by center-backs, vary the attack. Carry to the line, cut back, or reset through midfield. PES 2018 gives you enough ball feel that patient recycling can be more dangerous than another hopeful ball into traffic.

Game Plan and Mode Habits

Before a match, check whether your chosen team actually fits the style you want. A side with quick wide players can lean into wing play and cutbacks. A side with technical midfielders can build through short passes. A slower team may need safer buildup, earlier passes, and more conservative full-backs. The same tactic does not fit every squad.

During the match, use Game Plan as a practical tool. If you are losing midfield control, adjust support and positioning before chasing with tackles. If you are winning the ball but your striker has no help, push a runner closer or change the route of attack. If a winger is dominating, keep feeding that side until the opponent adapts.

Master League asks for more restraint than a single exhibition match. A transfer or lineup decision should fit the way you play, not just the biggest name available. Build a squad that gives you alternatives: pace wide, a reliable passer in midfield, a forward who can finish, and defenders who can survive when you lose the ball high up the pitch.

Random Selection Match is a different kind of fun. Because squads are mixed from selected leagues or countries, you need to identify strengths quickly. Do not force your usual plan onto a strange team. Check who has pace, who can pass, who can finish, and where the weak links are, then simplify your approach.

Online-era modes need a different expectation on an older annual sports game. If the menu still exposes service features on your platform, confirm what works before planning progress around them. For durable improvement, keep your core practice in modes you can launch reliably.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not spam through balls from midfield - Wait until the runner has a real lane or you will hand the ball to the back line.

  2. Do not shoot from range just because space appears - A clear sight, good body shape, and proper power matter more than distance alone.

  3. Do not finesse every finish - Use placement when the angle calls for it, not when a direct strike would be cleaner.

  4. Do not dribble into three defenders - Use skills to create a half-yard, then release the ball before help arrives.

  5. Do not cross to an empty box - Check your runners before sending the ball in from the wing.

  6. Do not ignore the cutback - Pulling the ball back to a late runner often beats a crowded near-post header.

  7. Do not leave attacking full-backs uncovered - Pass and Run can create overloads, but someone must protect the space behind them.

  8. Do not copy one tactic across every squad - Match your Game Plan to the players you actually have.

  9. Do not treat Master League like one exhibition match - Build depth and role fit instead of chasing only short-term stars.

  10. Do not plan around old online rewards first - Check platform availability before making online modes your main route.
