Prototype 2 Beginner Tips - Powers, Hunting, and Upgrades

Spoiler-light Prototype 2 tips for movement, Hunting, consuming, disguises, upgrades, mutations, Blacknet pacing, saves, New Game+, and combat habits.

On this page

Prototype 2 is a mature open-world action game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision. You play as Sgt. James Heller, using shape-shifting powers, disguises, Hunting, and upgrades across New York Zero.

Content warning: Prototype 2 is rated ESRB Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, and Strong Language. This guide keeps violence and body-horror references non-graphic and focused on play.

This is a spoiler-light beginner guide for a first campaign run and early cleanup planning. It is not a full walkthrough, collectible route, exact mutation build, Blacknet operation guide, achievement plan, power-stat sheet, or platform comparison.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Movement as Your First Survival Tool

The city is part of the combat kit.

Prototype 2 gives Heller a lot of vertical and horizontal movement, and locomotion upgrades are a major comfort pick when combat is not the immediate problem. Use rooftops, distance, and air movement to reset fights, find targets, and leave bad angles instead of trying to win every encounter from street level.

2. Hunt From High Ground

The sonar pulse is easier to read when the city is below you.

Hunting helps isolate human targets, and the higher ground is useful for higher ground as useful for reading target position. If a target hunt starts to feel messy, climb first, pulse from a clearer angle, then move toward the return instead of sprinting through crowds blindly.

3. Consume Before the Fight Gets Desperate

Recovery is active, not passive.

Consuming is tied to health recovery and disguise play. Do not wait until a heavy enemy or vehicle has already cornered you. If standard human-sized targets are available and the area allows it, recover before pushing into the next objective marker or side activity.

4. Use Disguise as Access, Not Decoration

Looking human changes how you approach bases and targets.

Consuming non-infected humans can give Heller their form. Use that to reposition, approach guarded spaces, and manage attention before you attack. If you only use disguise after a fight has already started, you miss one of the game’s cleaner infiltration tools.

5. Spend Across the Whole Upgrade System

Powers are only one part of progression.

Evolutions, Powers, Abilities, Mutations, and Skills are separate progression tracks. That matters because different actions feed different parts of Heller’s growth. Leveling, marked targets, side missions, and collectibles can all matter, so do not judge progress only by the newest combat power.

6. Pick Mutations Around What You Actually Use

A narrow favorite beats an impressive unused bonus.

Mutations improve Heller, but exact routes and reward tables need checking. On a first run, choose broad bonuses that fit your habits: movement if you cross the city constantly, survival if fights are draining you, and power support for the tools you use most often.

7. Mix Side Activities Between Story Missions

Cleanup is easier when you grow while the map opens.

Blacknet sets, Blackboxes, Field Ops, and Infected Lairs are all tied to mutation progress in route references, but exact counts and rewards belong in a dedicated route. The beginner habit is simple: do a few nearby side activities between story pushes, then return to the campaign when cleanup starts feeling like a checklist.

8. Save Manually Before Long Chains

Checkpoints help, but control your own rollback point.

Activision Support says Prototype 2 uses checkpoint autosaves and also supports manual saves from the pause menu. Use manual saves before starting a new mission chain, entering a side-activity run, or testing an unfamiliar power setup.

9. Reassign Powers If Something Feels Missing

The Power Wheel is worth checking before you assume a bug.

Activision Support lists a Power Wheel reassignment fix for cases where a mission leaves powers unavailable. If your active kit looks wrong after a transition, open the wheel and reassign the powers you meant to use before restarting or abandoning the activity.

10. Fight Vehicles With the Room, Not Just Your Arms

Thrown objects and military tools are part of the answer.

Firearms, explosives, vehicles, shape-shifted powers, thrown objects, shields, and military weapons all have practical roles against heavier threats. If a gunship or armored target is slowing you down, scan for vehicles, launchers, and throwable objects before committing to melee.

11. Respect Large Infected

Not every monster is a standard street fight.

Large infected enemies can punish direct pressure. Keep moving, watch their windups, and use dodge, block, range, or thrown objects depending on the encounter. Save exact enemy-by-enemy plans for a dedicated boss or enemy guide.

12. Use New Game+ for Completion Cleanup

A first run does not need to solve every reward table.

Activision Support says New Game+ can retain character progression from a completed save. That makes a relaxed first run more practical: learn movement, powers, side activity types, and combat habits now, then use a dedicated route later for collectibles, mutations, achievements, and higher-difficulty cleanup.

Combat Priorities

Upgrade and Cleanup Habits

  1. Buy traversal comfort early: Faster city movement makes Hunting, side activities, and recovery less tedious.
  2. Upgrade what you use: Do not chase a mutation just because it sounds strong if it supports a power you rarely equip.
  3. Consume marked targets when the game points them out: Marked targets can feed progression systems in route references.
  4. Do nearby side work in batches: A few Blacknet or collectible-adjacent activities between story missions keeps Heller growing without turning the first run into a route.
  5. Leave exact cleanup for later: Collectible counts, mutation rewards, Blacknet routing, and achievement timing need a dedicated checklist.
  6. Treat RADNET claims carefully: Official support says RADNET is no longer supported, so refresh platform-specific DLC behavior before relying on it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not hunt from street level when rooftops are available - Height makes the pulse easier to interpret.
  2. Do not wait until empty health to consume - Recovery works best before panic starts.
  3. Do not ignore disguise after consuming - Human forms can make the next approach cleaner.
  4. Do not spend every upgrade on damage - Movement, survival, and utility can save more time than another attack bonus.
  5. Do not force every side activity immediately - Take nearby rewards, then keep the story moving.
  6. Do not assume powers vanished permanently - Check the Power Wheel and reassign your kit.
  7. Do not charge vehicles head-on by habit - Use thrown objects, weapons, shields, or line of sight when the arena supports it.
  8. Do not stand still against large infected - Movement and timing matter more than trading hits.
  9. Do not depend on checkpoints alone - Manual saves protect long sessions and cleanup experiments.
  10. Do not plan around exact mutation or collectible rewards from memory - Use a verified route before doing full completion cleanup.
