Psychonauts 2 Collectibles Cleanup Guide - Figments, Baggage, and Rank 102

Plan a Psychonauts 2 collectible cleanup route for Figments, Emotional Baggage, Nuggets, Half-A-Minds, PSI Cards, Scavenger Hunt items, and Rank 102.

On this page

Psychonauts 2 by Double Fine Productions is a single-player platform-adventure where completion is tied to searching minds, revisiting hubs, spending Intern Credits, and using Raz’s psychic powers to reach places that are not available the first time through.

Content note: Psychonauts 2 uses stylized mental-health imagery, fantasy violence, and Teen-rated mild language, suggestive-theme, alcohol/tobacco, and crude-humor descriptors. This guide keeps that material non-graphic and focuses on completion systems.

This is a collectible cleanup route, not an all-location checklist. Use it to decide what to collect now, what to leave for later, and why postgame cleanup matters.

The clean route is to collect obvious items during the story, spend early ranks on movement and traversal support, then come back with the full power set. Psychonauts 2 deliberately hides many collectibles behind revisits, late powers, side doors, mail slots, timed challenge recovery, or physical-world traversal tricks.

Route Priorities

1. Collect What Is Visible, Then Keep Moving

On a first pass through a mind, grab visible Figments, Baggage Tags, Half-A-Minds, Nuggets, and Vaults, but do not turn every locked path into a long search. If a door, barrier, mail slot, Dark Thoughts chain, or odd traversal object does not respond to your current kit, mark the area for later.

This matters because several collectibles are easier or only possible after later powers or Brain Tumbler revisits. A fast first pass gives you ranks without stalling the story.

2. Prioritize Movement Before Combat Luxury

Prioritize Levitation III and Mental Connection IV as early completion tools because they make high platforms, longer routes, and thought-chain traversal easier to handle while you are still gathering ranks.

After those are covered, spend based on your bottleneck. If combat is slowing you down, buy damage or survivability upgrades. If exploration is the problem, keep favoring upgrades and pins that help movement, visibility, wallet capacity, or recovery.

3. Sweep Mental Worlds by Category

When you revisit a mind, work in layers:

  1. Check Baggage Tags and the matching bags.
  2. Look for Half-A-Minds before hard fights or platforming chains.
  3. Search side rooms and suspicious route breaks for Nuggets of Wisdom.
  4. Break or reach Memory Vaults once the required powers are available.
  5. Finish Figment cleanup last, because Figments are numerous and easier to miss without a near-complete route.

This order gets practical rewards first: health from Half-A-Minds, ranks from Nuggets and Baggage, then the most detailed visual sweep for Figments.

4. Treat Physical Hubs as Separate Cleanup Maps

The Motherlobe, Quarry, Questionable Area, and Green Needle Gulch are not just story spaces. They hold PSI Cards, PSI Challenge Markers, Supply Chests, Supply Chest Keys, Scavenger Hunt items, and optional mission targets.

Do a light hub sweep whenever the story sends you back, then save the serious hub cleanup for after you have late traversal tools. Several physical-world items use Projection, Time Bubble, Levitation, Telekinesis, campfire updrafts, or specific side-quest triggers.

5. Use the Otto-Matic as Part of Completion

The Otto-Matic is not just a shop. Use it to combine PSI Cards with PSI Cores, create PSI Challenge Markers, upgrade powers, buy pins, expand wallets and recovery capacity, and restock Dream Fluffs or PSI Pops when needed.

Do not let PSI Cards sit unused while you are short on ranks. Nine cards plus a Core means another rank, and ranks are what keep the upgrade route moving.

Collectible Categories

CollectibleWhy It MattersRoute Habit
FigmentsAdd rank progress in large batchesSweep slowly after the area is stable and use count checks before leaving.
Nuggets of WisdomGrant full rank progressCheck side rooms, upper paths, secret posters, alternate doors, and late-power routes.
Half-A-MindsTwo halves increase maximum mental healthPrioritize them before hard cleanup or boss cleanup.
Memory VaultsAdd character backstory and collector progressRevisit with Mental Connection, Projection/Archetype, PSI Blast, and other needed powers.
Emotional BaggageRequires matching tags and adds Intern Credit progressPick up tags even before you find the bag; reunite them during the mental-world sweep.
PSI CardsPhysical-world rank materialClear hubs in passes and combine cards at Otto-Matic machines.
PSI Challenge MarkersDirect rank boostsSearch physical hubs and create markers when card/core supplies allow it.
Mission Critical AssetsOptional Scavenger Hunt for NormaSave final cleanup for postgame because all 16 cannot be completed before then.

Power-Gated Cleanup

Mental Connection and Dark Thoughts

Mental Connection routes hide many collectibles, and some later chains use Dark Thoughts. If a thought-chain path branches upward, loops behind a scene, or appears to stop early, return after the relevant upgrade before calling the area clear.

Levitation

Levitation matters for height, distance, and updraft routes. Use it around hub cliffs, campfires, roofs, high ledges, and wide gaps. Many physical-world collectibles are placed where a normal jump is not the intended answer.

Time Bubble

Time Bubble cleanup shows up around moving platforms, waterwheels, logs, fans, or other objects that need to be slowed before Raz can cross them. Do not waste time trying to brute-force these routes early.

Projection and Archetype Routes

Projection/Archetype is a major late cleanup gate. Mail slots, barred doors, narrow passages, or internal switches often mean the item is real but not currently reachable. Put these on a revisit list instead of searching the same room for a hidden button.

Pyrokinesis, PSI Blast, and Telekinesis

Burn suspicious posters, blast cracked or barrier-like objects, and test Telekinesis on props that look interactive. Several route examples use these powers to open side spaces, trigger objects, or reveal collectibles.

Postgame Cleanup

Psychonauts 2 supports a meaningful cleanup pass after the story. Use postgame for anything that needs the full power kit, finished mental-world access, or optional mission completion.

Recommended order:

  1. Finish any obvious mental-world counts that only need a quick revisit.
  2. Clear power-gated Memory Vaults, Nuggets, Half-A-Minds, and Baggage pairs.
  3. Sweep physical hubs for PSI Cards, PSI Challenge Markers, Supply Chests, and keys.
  4. Finish Mission Critical Assets for Norma.
  5. Complete Queepie, Psychoseismometers, and Lili’s Fungus if they remain open.
  6. Spend remaining ranks and Psitanium at the Otto-Matic.
  7. Do achievement/trophy cleanup only after confirming the current platform list.

The Scavenger Hunt is the clearest reason not to force everything before the credits. Some items are explicitly tied to powers or postgame access, and the reward only lands once all 16 Mission Critical Assets are returned.

Accessibility Settings

Double Fine lists several useful settings for a cleanup run: no fall damage, invincibility against most attacks, Narrative Combat, camera shake intensity, color blindness compensation, larger/clearer subtitles, increased subtitle legibility, input remapping, lock-on input mode, and radial power mode behavior.

Use these as practical route tools. No fall damage can reduce frustration during vertical Figment or hub sweeps. Narrative Combat can make enemy rooms less disruptive when you are there for collectibles rather than challenge. Camera and subtitle settings help when mental worlds get visually busy.

Before chasing achievements or trophies, check how assist settings behave on your platform. This guide does not assume either outcome.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not spend every early rank on combat upgrades - Movement and traversal upgrades make collectible cleanup smoother and can prevent avoidable revisits.

  2. Do not ignore Baggage Tags because the matching bag is missing - Tags are half of the Emotional Baggage route, and carrying them forward saves time on revisit.

  3. Do not chase mail slots before Projection - Mark those doors for later and keep moving until the power is available.

  4. Do not brute-force Time Bubble routes early - If the object is too fast or the path feels impossible, it may be a deliberate slow-time route.

  5. Do not leave PSI Cards uncombined - Cards need PSI Cores at the Otto-Matic before they become rank progress.

  6. Do not assume missed Compton rewards are gone forever - Return later before using panic resets.

  7. Do not call the Scavenger Hunt complete before postgame - All 16 Mission Critical Assets are a postgame cleanup target.

  8. Do not finish Figments before larger collectibles - Figments are numerous and easy to misread; clear the more discrete rewards first, then do the detailed visual sweep.
